Description It'll be better if you downloaded this, rather than Full View.

Feel free to ask me any questions.

I'll submit the finished drawing soon, since I don't like strinking down the artwork that small. ^^

I used the same technique for the coloured pencil drawing: [link] (apologies from me, if you don't like Gackt )

This was initially to help my protΓ©gΓ©e *ShirubaaNeko with her own drawing of the ref.

Your technique with regular pencils is excellent, and this is a very detailed tutorial. I especially like how well you kept the subtle tones in the end and the highlights stood out like magic. I will keep these steps in mind if I ever need to draw complex blond hair myself

I'm really glad you found this useful/helpful. I was worried it was overly complicated. The technique requires a lot of patience and time, as you'd realised already with any general pencil drawing.

Thank you for the kind words!

You don't know how hard it is for me to draw blond hair D;
Thank you very much for the nice tutorial.
I'm always speechless if I see your detailed works great job

hedspace77 In reply to glas-onion [2011-01-21 21:15:34 +0000 UTC]

You just need a few decent 4H, 2H and H pencils which will create the glossy effect of blonde hair.
I'm glad the tutorial was ok to understand... I'm always worried that it was confusing for people.

glas-onion In reply to hedspace77 [2011-02-01 22:48:16 +0000 UTC]

You know what I need?
Patience and stamina! And I have none of it TT

Is it easier to draw straight blonde hair or curly blonde hair?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hedspace77 In reply to glas-onion [2011-02-13 16:00:27 +0000 UTC]

Well, I hardly have patience and stamina either. That is something I cannot teach. If you have the right pencils, then it's half the battle done already.

Hmm. I would say it's easier to draw curly blonde hair, even though I enjoy drawing the straight blonde types too. It's easier to make curly hair look glossy anyway.

glas-onion In reply to hedspace77 [2011-02-23 11:01:02 +0000 UTC]

The right pencils.... seems like I have too many pencils but I don't know if they are good. Sometimes I only use 3 different kinds and that's all. We got some from my school but if I'm honest they are pretty cheap and some have the same hardness (I don't know what's the English word for it... like HB, B, H...)

Really? But you could be right :/
For curly hair you just have to draw shorter lines as for straight hair, right?

Nah, no way! I think I'd suck at making tutorials. I'm too impatient to try and teach anyone, I always assume people know more than they do... You're very welcome and you deserve it!

I'm very grateful that you find this tutorial helpful. I was worried I made it too complicated to understand.
The trick with drawing hair is start with the 'simple' parts first, then build it up. It requires a lot of patience.

Many thanks for appreciating.

Larc-Romeo In reply to hedspace77 [2010-10-01 00:49:49 +0000 UTC]

It's not complicated to understand (even for me)
It makes me appreciate the amount of time needed to get it right.
I usally do the hair last, and am in a sudden rush to get drawing finished, so patience is the key.
Maybe I should take a break when its time to do the hair, even come back to it the next day.
So many times I do a relativly decent job on the face, and then ruin it with the hair.
Time to change that, Thanks again.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hedspace77 In reply to Larc-Romeo [2010-10-08 20:06:27 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, I'm very glad the tutorial is ok to follow.

Yes, taking a break before tackling the task of the hair is a good idea. What I do is pencil-in one layer of strands to the hair, and do the next layer on the next day. I still find drawing hair time consuming...

That's ok, keep persevering.

a brush for blending? now that's smart xD I'll need to try this out!
The tutorial seems to be helpful, though, without patience even this wouldn't help xD
I'm faving it anyway

Yes, the small brush has helped me a lot to appreciate normal pencils more. It's handy for detailed shading.

I understand! It's difficult to explain how I draw hair... but trying out things is the key. ;D

Many thanks!

Wow, this is a great tutorial! I'm gonna use it since I'm drawing Maria Sharapova right now and she has really blond hair.

Your tutorial also made me realise how impatient I am when drawing hair.

Cool, thanks. Oh there are plenty of blonde tennis players. XD And you're right - she definitely has bright hair.

Glad to have been a help. Yes, I used to be impatient with hair (like scribbling it), but now it's a completely different challenge.
