Description

Tinker's folder

Ever since the dwarves popped out of the earth eons ago, everyone bound them with mining, metal-craft and jewelry. They are the masters of metal and lords of steel, burrowing in the murky dept without an end, searching and bringing precious raw materials to the surface. The finest and best of blades and weapons born under their sedulous hands, every piece passing the test of battle, keeping a razor edge against the odds and remaining immaculate, confuting time itself... blah... blah... blah... heard this one a thousand times already!

Everyone always brags about the same thing! Dwarves this, dwarves that... yeah, they are good, I get it, but still...what's a big deal? Eh, nothing but a bunch of hairy madmen, if you ask me, digging holes, hammering iron and inflating the price causeless, by not sharing all their knowledge. Greedy bastards!

But what about us? Who keeps count of our humble kind? When will we step out of the enslaving shadow of the dwarves and be taken seriously? I am pretty sick of the role of the little workshop helper, working under their hands, while they bath the shine of glory, brought by their blades and contraptions?

I WANT ACKNOWLEDGEMENT!!!

-suddenly the heavy ironing of the shop door started to scoop scaring away the listening crowd - two sooty cats - , and a moment latter, with his thundering voice a burst of laughter engulfed the smithy:

HAHHHHAHAHAHAH!!! So you want acknowledgment, lad? Aye?? Then move your flabby arse, and get those damn crates of coal into the warehouse!! - rumbled the dwarf with pretended rage, resting his eyes on a small piece of tinkering, left on the anvil in the sudden confusion, thinking somewhat proudly to himself:

-hmm... not bad for a gnome...

This little folder is entirely made of steel, with an enchanted gnomish mechanism

The total length is 22.5 cm. The blade is a san mai, forged of bicycle chain with an 5160 edge, it is 10 cm long, 3.4 cm wide and 4.5 mm thick.

It is quite light for its construction, weighing only 230 grams.

One needs both hands to open and close it and it's completely child proof!

Nice! I just checked out some of your other work, it's Great!
I may never be able to afford it but do you have a way to purchase that doesn't involve Facebook? If so please send me the link.
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, glad you like my work!
Sure, I have site with my stuff:   hellize.wixsite.com/mysite
or you can also find me here, besides of DA:   knifeandcraft.com/en/hellize.h…

But what do you mean, you will be not able to afford it ever? I am pretty cheap compared to others

Your price is very reasonable for the work you do. Unfortunately, I'm on a very limited fixed disability income and have to save a long time for luxury items like cool weapons, etc.
I meant no disparagement to your prices and apologize for sounding like I was.
I really like well made blades, especially Damascus and am into Steampunk style. The work you put into your blades is very evident. I know what it takes to turn out quality.
Thanks for the information. I hope to one day own a piece you made.

Oh I see, sorry to hear that
Yes, damascus is quite hard to make, takes a lot of energy, time and materials, in fact I am always surprised, when I see unreal prices on the net. Can not understand how some people can make it that cheap. Hmm...
And including mechanisms, even as simple as this, just raise everything I need to make it.
If you think I do have some damascus kiridashies available on my site, they are a lot cheaper but still quite handsome in my eyes.

Your work is very handsome and worth every nickel you are asking.
I was in retail for many years, selling all sorts of things but always had a soft spot for well made knives.
Most people don't have a clue what the difference between real Damascus & the knock offs is. I do & have a great respect for the craftsmanship real Damascus entails.
Most of the fake is just a top pattern to give the illusion it's Damascus (which anyone who knows can tell by price) it's usually rolled on before heat treatment.
The mechanisms you build are a lot of what sets your work apart from the crowd and one of the things that caught my attention along with the hand made rivet pins.
I also have a background in manufacturing from which comes the ability to separate quality from crap.
One day I will be happy to aquire one of your works for my collection. Until then I'll admire them.
May you be prosperous in your endeavor and happy with the work you do!

Hmm... I didn't knew they fake damascus like that! Very interesting. It sure explains the low price.
I thought that maybe in some of those third world countries, electricity is very cheap, or the coal comes almost for free or something like that, but this idea of fake mass production is new to me.
Thanks for the insight! And for the good wishes!

There are also some which are stamped or acid etched as well. It depends on the production run.
About the 2nd time you pass a sharpening stone along them the design comes off too.
The ones you see as 1 offs are possibly printed, most likely pad print but possibly screen.

I know we haven't talked in a long time but I found some information on Damascus looks I thought you might be interested in.
The Blade show is coming up and today I received an email with a video of Damascus etching technique.
If you Google the Blade Show you can see all the interesting innovations as well as maker profiles and other stuff.
If you can't get the video drop me back a line and I'll send it to you.
I hope all is well with you and you're still making beautiful blades!

Take care,

Max

Thanks for letting me know! I will check it out.
Yeah, I still forge this and that, from time to time.

Ah, I always enjoy your descriptions
And as I love steampunk, machines of every sort and tinkering myself I also really enjoy this folder. It's beautiful!
But how is it child proof (assumed I would leave it open and had kids)? Or is it just child proof in a way that they can't open it themselves, because I honestly can't imagne you'd sell a blunt blade/knife.
You're a dwarf, admit it already

Thanks!
By child proof, I mean that the spring, keeping the folder closed, is pretty strong. My wife can't open it, so I think a regular kid under 12-14 years, have no chance either

Well, I sure wish I were living inside mount Erebor

You're welcome
I wonder if I could do it then if your wife can't, but I don't know how strong she is in comparison to me.
Just imagine how much you could learn about forging!

I'm 5'10 or 1,78m so... yeah, could work.
Oh, yes! But I don't think they would let you get away with it so easily, though I bet they wouldn't notice if one or two gems just disappeared. Together with a few coins
