That axe handle is nice bro. Is that a traditional form or did you just make it up?  Its cool either way bro

Thanks a lot! I have to disappoint you, I just made that up

haha, no disappointment bro, its a nice form. And its still got a good flow and balance, it looks balanced to me. You can still see that invisible line from the back of your handle hitting the back of your axe head. Nice work, you got me thinking

Looks pretty straight forward... is there a trick to it, or are you talking about the angle on the bend flattening out?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hellize In reply to SavageHeritage [2018-06-06 09:15:15 +0000 UTC]

There no tricks at all. If the wood gives it out, then it can be done. You only have to find the perfect piece

SavageHeritage In reply to hellize [2018-06-06 13:50:14 +0000 UTC]

Now that you say it... I face palmed. I wasnt even thinking along those lines. I was just thinking of carving it out, I probably still will but yer a wood naturally shaped that way makes a lot of sense haha

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hellize In reply to SavageHeritage [2018-06-06 18:23:17 +0000 UTC]

hehe, yeah! And actually it is a lot better that way, I mean, if the wood keeps its original growth lines, the shaft will be a LOT stronger.

hellize In reply to RustyBoots [2017-09-16 15:47:07 +0000 UTC]

Sounds sweet!
A similar pair would be 380 euro, which is 560 canadian dollars, if I am not mistaking.
In that price you would also receive a leather sheath (ornamented or plain, black or brown, as you wish) made of thick cowhide for both, also made by me.
There is no upfront payment. You only pay if you like what I make!
If you are ok with all this, please leave me an e-mail address in pm, for easier communication and for the pics eventual pictures

Yes, the axe was the real challenge here.

Do you sell your weapons? How much would an average knife be?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hellize In reply to M-M-X [2016-04-29 04:44:29 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I sell them.
The price depends on the knife's size and material from which it is made.
A knife with a 10-15 cm long damascus blade is around 150 euro.

Ah, again, gorgeous work! The pattern on the axe is just wonderful. I like the looks of the haft, altough I cannot help myself, altough I wonder, doesn't it feel... unbalanced, wanting to tip over when held at the end? Also, I need to express my worry for the haft maybe snapping in the bend when under heavy stress, as it is not a natural bend in the wood. But it still looks damn good! Oh, how I envy you.

Instead of working on blacksmithing, which I feel is the only thing I am fairly competent at, for past two months, I am working on a (big) welding & grinding "shed". Grumble grumble. At least the weather is getting better, so I finally can work on that puukko of mine outside. On the other hand, I already had to file so much material away I am affraid that I'll file all the layers off, since it is a billet cut in half sandwiched over a tool steel core. Hopefuly not.

Thanks a lot and please don't hate me
Nop, the handle is quite comfortable when you hack with the axe, I have splited some firewood to check it out. As for the curvature, you might be right, it probably isn't as strong as a straight shaft, but this how my customer wished it. Probably because it does look a lot more cooler this way

Will "the shed" be your shed? If yes, then it will be quite rewarding when it is ready and you don't have to work outside

Erik-Blackboar In reply to hellize [2016-04-21 14:55:03 +0000 UTC]

Very well then! That's good to hear. And nah, I am just, hm... giving way to my frustration, let's say!

Well, the shed is about... arh, roughly 6x12x4metres building, sharing one wall with the school smithy, while the other walls are going to be covered with combination of sheet metal and plexi-glass, with some free space below the ceiling to provide air circulation. Sadly, the architect was an idiot, there were only steel pillars holding the roof and a few supports between them. Several of which we had to re-do and add many, many more to actually have a frame to install the walls on. It'll be for welding and grinding. Both of which I do the least amount of in the smithy, not counting hand grinding and forge welding. So no, it will not be mine. That's why I'm grumpy about it! Being a construction worker instead of forging, grrrh!

hellize In reply to Erik-Blackboar [2016-04-21 18:51:18 +0000 UTC]

Bummer! Those measurements would be enough for a pretty decent little smithy of your own too!
My place is only 5x7 meters in total, and it is seperated in two by a thin wall. The larger 5x4.5 is for the dirty work, forging, grinding and other stuff like that, and the smaller 5x2.5 is for clean and delicate work, sculpting handles, making sheaths and such. I am a bit cramped in it with all the tools, supplies and work-benches.
Also it is unfortunately made mostly of wood, with only two walls around my fire made of bricks so I always have lots of water and a fire extinguisher nearby - you surely know the laws of Murphy?! Had no money to make the thing out of steel, though that would be the best!

Erik-Blackboar In reply to hellize [2016-04-21 20:51:51 +0000 UTC]

Hah! That would be plenty of room for my needs! Altough I am certain I could find some crap to crowd the room with! Having a fire extinguisher around is never a bad thing, altough to tell you the truth, we made a little "hobby" smithy with my friend, with only three walls made mostly of wood, and it is about 2,5 x 3,5m. We've forged a reconstruction of 14th century plough metal elements from fairly large pieces of steel, with no problems other than cursing archeologists for not documenting the dimensions properly.

True, for shaping handles and so on, we use the woodworking shop of his father, about 2x5m. But that's plenty for me. I try to be modest. And honestly? I like working with leather, and hopefully soon, with wood, bone and antler, in the backyard, sitting on the bench, listening to the birds as I work. Damn, I need to get some leather. It's been ages since I did any leathercrafting.

Altough, with the puukko I am working on, I have no energy or mood to work on it too much at home. So I started to brew myself a half-liter of tea, grab a clamp, a file and the blade and work on it for as long as I have tea. I get to calm down and relax nicely, and since working with something I've never done before, in such small portions, I get ideas how to proceed overnight and see what's wrong the next day. So, hopefuly, I'll manage to make it nicely.

Oh, and also, I like your new seax! I find the dragon on the sheath very fitting. The synthetic red cord? Not so much. And why do I comment on it here? I blame lazyness and sleepyness.

Yup, there is always more than enough crap!
That sounds like a good plan with the tea, go for it
Yeah, I usually use black or green paracord, but unfortunately just ran out of them, so I had to use whatever I have around. Btw, it is all that red, the picture is quite exaggerating the tone

Must say that your Sigil footprint fits your crafts beautifully! Also incredibly beautiful designs of both axe ans knife! Love how alive and unregular the patterns are.

Yes the patterns really got quite random in this one. That's the prize if you forge the steel by hand
