Ahh just be careful not to even attack him since he's really weak as an enemy!
You just have to let Chrom speak to him, so move Chrom + a mounted unit (actually I think Gaius has 5 movement squares when you recruit him, so you can safely approach him with anyone with 6+ movement squares), and once you get rid of all the enemies, place Chrom (or Chrom paired with mounted unit if you want to make 100% sure you reach Gaius and such, or aren't close enough) just outside his attack range, then just talk to him in the next turn.
I think he doesn't even move unless you enter his range so it should be easy : D just remember it has to be Chrom. He becomes a really good unit and gives high speed stats to his sons/daughters so you should definitely get him = v= good luck!
