Description This was so fun but so hard too @_@! I was so worried I wouldn't be able to make him look like the actual person I was asked to portrait!
It was mindblowing to read all the details she wrote of what she wanted. Goodgood commissioner to work with : D

Also I'm so glad I got to draw my first non-kawaii cat ever. Yeeee.

Hello! I commissioned this piece and thought I'd drop in. I planned this as a gift for a friend of mine who is very into the series, so I thumbed through the uniform manuals as well as some online illustrations and matched what I read as regulation as well as what I had remembered reading in the books (I've only read a handful, though, so I'm not surprised I got a few things wrong). My intent was mostly to ask for something I knew he'd like that fit him as a person. At any rate, it's always nice to run into another fan of the series, especially since we seem incredibly hard to find these days. And thanks again, Helly. I'm still totally blown away by this every time I look at it.

I think that's one of the best treecats I've seen in a while, and that uniform looks pretty great, too. I do see a few problems with it, though (If you don't want to hear about it, just ignore this next part).

The upper left sleeve is 100% accurate for a Petty Officer 1st Class Environmental Technician, but that's an Enlisted rank. Cuff rings, shoulder boards, collar insignia, the Space Warfare Pin, and dress swords are only part of Officers' uniforms. Additionally, the white beret is only worn by an officer in command of a starship, and the only collar insignia arranged like what is shown here is that of a Fleet Admiral - much too high-ranked to command a single ship. Finally, the buttons are only worn on the Dress and Mess Dress uniforms; if this is a Dress uniform, there should be no sword, and if it is Mess Dress, the shoulder boards are replaced with epaulettes. And for both Mess and Mess Dress uniforms, the award ribbons are replaced with their corrosponding medals. Finally, the sword amnd sword belt aren't regulation, and the collar insignia don't exactly match those of any RMN rank.

Individually, each portion is very accurate; the problem is that parts of several different uniforms are mixed and matched.

Thanks! I've never read the series, so I was actually just following my client's instructions and have no idea how the actual uniforms work though, since she was very specific about the medals, placement of things and such. But it's nice to know anyway, so thank you for taking your time to write all the details!

Ah, I should have read the description. Interesting that they know enough to tell you how to get each part right (and seriously, there's only 4 small things I see that aren't exactly like the actual uniforms) but apparently chose to mix and match the parts like that. Now I'm curious about their reasoning...

Nerdy fan that I am, I have the actual uniform manual and specifications, hence my unnecessarily thorough knowledge on the subject.

Oh, it's definitely awesome. I only look at things that closely if I think they're worth my attention, and this art certainly is. And I'm not the only one who's eye this caught - at HonorCon, a representative from Evergreen Studios (the company adapting the books for screen) mentioned it, too.

I realize my nitpicky-ness doesn't always come off as complimentary, and I try to choose my words carefully, but trust me - if I didn't like it, and it wasn't extremely impressively accurate, I wouldn't have bothered commenting about the little things.

And really, most of them are things only a crazy-devoted super-geek would catch, anyways.
