Description
Hey guys! Here's something I've had alot of requests for for a long while. This is a step-by-step for the character rendering style I do in the pages of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Universe every month! I've been meaning to put this together for ages and finally had a window thanks to the production schedule for the Sonic/Mega Man crossover.I hope this is useful or at least sheds some light on the process for ya'!
Also, I have a PSD of this lone panel with each of these steps separated onto its own layer. If someone can suggest a way to host that and link it here for download, I'd be happy to share that, too.

Alright. I always want to find other methods. I should experiment with your tutorial here.
So how have you been?

2-3 hours?!
Well, I need to speed up. I'll start by checking out those books you recommended, and seriously looking at my coloring process. Thanks for putting this tutorial together!

No prob! Thanks for checking it out!
Speed largely develops over time and mostly out of necessity. (Especially when juggling multiple books and/or books that blow their deadlines.) What's funny is that I developed this coloring style for the "Genesis" arc - which was supposed to be this big anniversary event with more time and effort put into everything... I liked it enough that I kept doing it, and that style ended up being the fastest way I could color.

Actually this helps quite abit. I never was that good at managing cel-shading in CMYK. This definitely helps me set a baseline for managing percentages. I do have a couple of questions.
1) So long as your 2 colors adhere to these definitions, do the gradients fall into the 200% to 300% range automatically or do you have to manage them more closely?
2) Noticed you used a dot tone for the background, do you use other programs like Manga Studio to make and manage these or custom in Photoshop?

1. Yep! Automatically. Also, if you haven't used any K Tone in the mixture you can go in and darken or even use Adjustment Layers or Modes on that area and it will stay 300% or lower, since it only has CMY in the mixture to adjust.
For example, in the final page, panel 3, where Sally is in the foreground. I colored her normal then selected her entirely. Then Adjustments->Hue/Saturation where I knocked the Lighteness down about 20 points. Then Adjustments->Color Balance where I added more blue into the mixture. Because I never used any K Tone in Sally's coloring, all of those mixtures are still 300% or below.
2. All Photoshop. I actually bought some screen tones at an anime convention several years ago that I scanned in and cleaned up. Now I have a small library of dot-patterns to work with!

1) Nice that's really sweet. I'll definitely give it a shot with the next few projects.
2) Cool I think I can handle that. I do have a few samples I can throw together and define some PS patterns. I probably need some training on their basic use cases and proper application, but that's what research is for. Thanks again Matt!

oh as for hosting a PSD, Google Drive and Dropbox are great services for sharing files both privately and publicly.

Interesting. I employ a similar technique, but it has more steps, different tools, and apparently takes me much longer...
This is a very useful tut! Thanks for sharing!

Are you guys bringing Shard, Hershey and Julie-Su back?

Hershey and Julie most likely won't be back in the book anytime soon or ever because of Ken Penders. Shard was created by Ian so he should be back eventually.

Never say "never" bro. If Penders is really true to the StH franchise, he'll work it out with Archie (we can only hope).
