Nope, it just took 30 or so tries to get everything streaking more or less vertically and with not too much shake from side to side. Also playing with the shutter speed has a huge effect, the speed of the pan, and what part you start and end the exposure (how much sky, ground, etc). A simple technique but it will produce essentially infinite variation and no two shots are ever exactly alike.

Really nice. I have a technique question. I've seen some photos like this before, and I'm curious as to how you achieve this effect. Do you use a longer shutter, then pan the camera up or down?

Exactly, yes. Look at the aperture setting in my exif data, bottom right.
