Description A silly continuation of:

Dwarves seem to have earned a reputation for being brutish and rough which I hotly contest. Yes, they're fierce warriors and like to bash and hack the shit out of enemies, but they're also metal smiths and let me tell you, metal smithing is the FIDDLIEST FUCKING THING ON THE PLANET. Until you've spent hours precariously balancing a ring on a firebrick, poking a tiny prong setting into place, applying flux and a microscopic piece of solder, and then fighting to keep it all exactly as you placed it until the solder melts, you cannot understand what otherworldly patience and finesse dwarves must possess. Even blacksmithing requires a lot of minute and careful maneuverings as well as some serious bashing power. Stout stature might suggest otherwise, but immense strength is very useful for delicate work because your body doesn't get tired so easily and slip up. Smithing also requires an unusual attention to detail because one tiny little setback might mean a hundred hours of cleanup.

That is why, whether dwarves are cutting gems, settings stones, making knives, or massaging elves, they are probably the most gentle, careful, detail-sensitive people in Middle Earth.

Here are some of the other Legolas and Gimli comics:

As someone who lives with a blacksmith (well, apprentice but still) who can fight and is built like a friggin grizzly, I approve of the artist comments on this one. Sounds right to me.

This reminds me of some chiropractors I've had. One was into the modern way of doing it, only cracking a few places on the spine. The other was like a barbarian. I want to hear my spine crack!

I've never taken an official class for it, but I've taken up wire-wrapped jewelry for a club at school and that is a small hell on its own when trying to do details. Dwarves are badasses man.
And if we forget about the metal, how about all the *stone* work they do? That also takes some precision planning and attention to detail. You don't get to mess up if what you're doing is literally going to be carved in stone forever.

Omg this is so funny, not just the faces on Legolas but this also reminds me of my husband and myself (My husband is a dwarf and I'm an elf on LOTRO) and for a power strong with large hands man he gives the BEST messages I've ever had. Of course he's also a chef and like metalsmithing that takes a delicate hand and attention to details...

Ha ha ha what a coincidence! Yeah, cooking takes a lot of finesse if simply to avoid chopping or burning yourself. :F

I love how you use Legolas's ears to display emotion, I don't think I've ever seen anyone else do that sort of thing.

It probably comes from drawing a lot of animals. Ear communication makes so much sense to me that I do it without thinking.

TOTALLY agree with you on the metal smithing...that stuff is so freakin' teadious...Rings are really hard. Thicker gage makes for more difficult shaping, and don't even get me started on soldering. Still, I'll admit it is a lot of fun, it just really tries you're patience once you tried soldering the same piece for the last four hours.

if you've never read r.a. salvatore, your description reminded me of a paragraph in one of his books. of course, when you measure time in centuries instead of mere decades, you learn patience

"What a sight that must have been! Dwarves scrambling from level to level to show off their latest
work, a mithril item of incredible beauty and value. And yet, judging from what Drizzt knew of the
dwarves in Icewind Dale, even the slightest imperfection would send the artisans scurrying back to their
anvils, begging their gods for forgiveness and the gift of skill sufficient to craft a finer piece. No race in
all the Realms could claim such pride in their work as the dwarves, and the folk of Clan Battlehammer
were particular even by the standards of the bearded people. "

Why do I find YOUR version of Legolas better looking than Orlando Bloom? (Then again, not hard to find guys better looking than Orlando Bloom.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hibbary In reply to ProffesionalZombie12 [2012-12-21 06:43:24 +0000 UTC]

I dunno. I'm pretty ambivalent toward Bloom. I found his version of Legolas to be unbearably stupid, though. His keen elvish powers manifested as stating the obvious and looking confused/on the cusp of vomiting.

ProffesionalZombie12 In reply to hibbary [2012-12-21 07:06:35 +0000 UTC]

I never liked Bloom. Just not my type of guy....ESPECIALLY as Legolas, where the crew slapped a blond wig on him and gave him a fake tan.

YES. After seeing The Hobbit I 90% prefer dwarves to elves. They are such epic, creative characters. Elves obviously make the best and finest, but Dwarven weaponry has character! I mean, an oak branch as a shield? Stuff of legends.
