Description A silly continuation of:

Dwarves seem to have earned a reputation for being brutish and rough which I hotly contest. Yes, they're fierce warriors and like to bash and hack the shit out of enemies, but they're also metal smiths and let me tell you, metal smithing is the FIDDLIEST FUCKING THING ON THE PLANET. Until you've spent hours precariously balancing a ring on a firebrick, poking a tiny prong setting into place, applying flux and a microscopic piece of solder, and then fighting to keep it all exactly as you placed it until the solder melts, you cannot understand what otherworldly patience and finesse dwarves must possess. Even blacksmithing requires a lot of minute and careful maneuverings as well as some serious bashing power. Stout stature might suggest otherwise, but immense strength is very useful for delicate work because your body doesn't get tired so easily and slip up. Smithing also requires an unusual attention to detail because one tiny little setback might mean a hundred hours of cleanup.

That is why, whether dwarves are cutting gems, settings stones, making knives, or massaging elves, they are probably the most gentle, careful, detail-sensitive people in Middle Earth.

Here are some of the other Legolas and Gimli comics:

I my goodness, I can totally agree with you and metalworking. With the prongs, the solder, how everything has to be just right. I've spent so many sleepless nights trying to work with metal. It is very detail-oriented and requires very stable, very gentle hands...

Plus, elves seem to have elongated, bony kind of fingers to me...I'd much rather have hearty hands massaging me. lol

I totally get this. I remember taking a jewelery class when I was at college, and man, I never, EVER had the finesse to solder ring shanks together. It was just beyond me. Dwarves might have the brute strength and stoutness they're known for, but they clearly also have some serious dexterity and patience to deal with that sort of thing!

I'm so glad someone who's taken a metal smithing class has commented, because people really don't understand until they've done it how astoundingly finicky metalwork really is. Now we are comrades. It's like being through a war together

Lol...actually it was pretty funny being in the class. It was a jewelery class, so a lot of non-art majors joined it to get their GenEd requirements...mostly the girly-girl types that just wanted to make shiny things for themselves. I think they were expecting something like "lol, put beads on string, pretty necklaces!"

They were shocked at how much the class required both muscle and endurance, and patience and dexterity, almost simultaneously, just to make necklaces and rings and things.

I don't think they'll look at jewelery the same way, at least I certainly have more appreciation for the craft after that course.

Oh. Man. Yeah, people who think that taking an art class is an easy A dooooon't understand. Of all the classes I've taken, metalsmithing was, by far, the most time intensive, followed by loom weaving. But loom weaving is *only* time intensive. You don't run the risk of melting already-soldered work and undoing fifty hours. Metalwork takes intense concentration at all points of the process. You can never just zone out.

So yeah, I imagine they were in for an unpleasant surprise

I laughed every time we had non-art majors in any of our art classes. It was pretty common for the non-art majors to think we were lazy, silly, head-in-the-clouds artists faffing about and wasting time. Then they'd join a metals class, or sculpting, or graphics design class, and realize we worked just as hard as--if not harder than--they did in their mathematics classes or when they wrote their papers.

I think my personal favorite was the objects-and-figure-drawing classes, when they discovered observational drawing is not doodling on a sketchpad...it's intensive drawing, focusing on minute details of line and shape and proportion and shade, for three hours as you focus on what you see and not what you think you see. But to their credit, by the end of the course they were drawing very well, once they learned art is not silly and easy. Also it was kinda hilarious to watch their reactions the first time they had to draw nude models lol.

Definitely harder. DEFINITELY. I skated without effort through every biology, chemistry, anthropology, lit, etc. class that I had in college. The only ones I had to seriously work in were the studio arts and latin.

VelkynKarma In reply to hibbary [2012-12-21 04:08:33 +0000 UTC]

I agree, I was the same way. I found most courses pretty easy to get through as long as you paid attention and didn't slack off, but all my art classes were about more than just paying attention. You had to plan ahead to get projects done, put a LOT of effort into them, and spend a lot of time and money perfecting everything so it'd be just right for your portfolio.

I mean, it's pretty unlikely the job you apply for is going to look at your math test or your English paper in order to decide if they're gonna hire you or not. But they will be looking at your portfolio, so that stuff had better look fantastic.

Okay, being as I am massage therapist, I have a distinct need to correct an assumption here. Giving a good massage is not about strength - it's about leverage and finesse. Teeny tiny little girls can give amazing down to the bone deep tissue massages because they are using the proper leverage for their body (which blows a ton of people's minds, btw). Guys can give deeper massages easier because they are taller and therefore have an easier time getting the leverage. However, I'm all of 5'4" and have shown quite a few people how it's done. So! It's not about strength. Lol.

However, that being said, considering dwarves do know to to deal with fiddly work, are good with their hands, and understand all about leverage from swinging those giant hammers around, they would probably give awesome massages... provided the massage table was low enough for them to have the proper leverage. Lol.

Still! Adorable! Beautiful artwork, and oh so much fun. These two clowns and your take on them is hilarious, Hibbs.

hibbary In reply to Fearecia [2012-12-21 00:29:10 +0000 UTC]

That's what I was saying. *Because* they are good at careful work, they would be good at massages. As opposed to bashing people around.

Man, you're right. It's easy to just show them swinging around giant hammers and then cutting to the insanely intricate result, so no one appreciates the OTHER 95% of the work.
