Description And here's part two!

Those of you looking for more specific direction might like that one better.

These crazy things take me so damned long. Honestly, I've put a lot of hours into it, which is why it's so late.

I realize this is word-heavy. Sorry, but I didn't make this tutorial for people who don't like to read. There are already dozens of these on DA and you can find them by plugging 'poses' into the search bar. I felt the need to cover information that the others don't.

I thought I had a LOT more to say about this but I guess I don't. It might come back to me later. Apologies for spelling errors. I read over it about ten times and kept finding tiny little things so I'm sure there are still a few hiding here and there.

I like this tutorial. It feels human and down-to-earth. I like that you point out your own natural mistakes rather than deliberately creating them like a lot tutorials do. It adds to the friendliness of this tutorial whilst keeping it informative.
PS: I also struggle with head to body relationships.

This is really motivating. I definitely know I have a lot of things to work on in terms of "Animal" anatomy. I think I will set aside the things I am fine with now and work on the problems I am aware of.

I am looking forward to part 2!

Thanks for the realistic, fluff-free yet positive approach. This is a great aid to get focused and I, personally, really appreciate that you put the effort into making it. Looking forward to the next installment!

this is a really great tutorial. I think the extra reading is more helpful (at least for me) than just pictures depicting "this is how it should be done". this really lists out plainly what is required to improve ones self and I really appreciate that.

thank you so much for making this, I think it's just what I needed to get myself going on improving my 'people skills' (aka drawing them. lol)

you're awesome and I can't wait to see part 2!

moar words!! xD lol i love reading indepth tutes/guides
some things i'm good at drawing happen because i like to stare at people randomly and while im doing so, ill study them as as if they were an image rather than a 3D thing. i learned a lot about the shoulder-neck relationship and especially the nature of different fabrics

I stare at people too! ^^ It weirds them out, though. Weirds me out, too. I always get nervous that'll they'll catch me staring. Happened once before. Wasn't pretty

Your thing at the bottom about practicing reminded me of this [link] (the 'Practice does not make perfect' entry). This is an amazing picture blog and I encourage all artists to read it all.

Honestly I like the text in it. It effectively takes the ideas you are trying to convey and BEATS THEM INTO THE READERS HEAD. *thinks a moment* WITH THE D*MN KITCHEN FLOOR.

Overall a lot of it clicks well with me. And it points out ideas that have been floating in my subconscious but have never been able to nail down.

Do you make yours thumbnails from pictures or from real people ?
I'm not in school anymore so it's hard to find someone to pose for me... I'm using pictures but I know some people think it's better to have a model :/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hibbary In reply to Capuline [2013-01-17 20:45:03 +0000 UTC]

it's better to have a model but you don't always get that luxury, especially if you're not in school or near a college.

These thumbnails didn't use any reference. They're just little drawings. The drawing from life (or from a photo if that's all you've got) would be the anatomical studies I mentioned.

thank you^^that helped me a lot to organize my sketches. I always need a plan for what I do. Otherwise I donΒ΄t know how to start and in the end I drew nothing or I drew something crappy

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hibbary In reply to Cedeera [2013-01-17 20:39:43 +0000 UTC]

This is what I always do, too. And then I get all discouraged because I feel like I'm going nowhere.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Cedeera In reply to hibbary [2013-01-17 20:50:08 +0000 UTC]

because of that I keep a journal. IΒ΄ve seen it happen to often that I draw nothing for a couple of days because I thought IΒ΄m not improving. Now I write every day a short entry in my notebook and say myself what was good today. Just details like: Today I noticed that eyes in profile view looks like that and that, or when I drew a portrait and it felt easy and it looks good. I describe myself how it felt like and when IΒ΄m upset again, I look at it and then I can work again^^
I have that advice from the book "Steal like an artist. 10 things nobody told you about being creative." ItΒ΄s a really helpful book^^

Maybe if what you've got to say is mostly thoughts and less images, you can consider writing a journal?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hibbary In reply to TrollGirl [2013-01-17 19:59:45 +0000 UTC]

I could, but I'd like to know what rule says that a tutorial has to contain more artwork than words. I'm passing on information that I feel is valuable. This takes the form of mostly words and also some images. That it is an image file rather than a text file doesn't change the information. Were I to make a journal, it would contain exactly the same thing but with a clunkier arrangement of text. vs. images.

If someone doesn't want to take the trouble to read it, that's fine. This is not the tutorial for them. Their tutorial is somewhere else on DA.

In any case, think of this as an introduction. There will be more tutorials with more images later on.

I think the problem isn't as much the words as poor design. I didn't break up the words enough. So I'm reworking it a little bit to be easier to swallow.

I have a suspicion part of the problem is just bad design. I'll fiddle with it.
