Description
the second part ofit gets into the method a little more and includes some of my process. Don't take these drawings as anatomically perfect. I am not telling you how to draw a certain figure, rather, how to teach yourself how to draw figures.
Edit: Sorry dudes; I see a few wee spelling and grammatical errors but it's soooo late and I'm in bed. I'll fix them in the morning.

thanks for those two tutorials, really helping, mostly the motivation part, but still, the actual "tutorial" part is useful
So thanks again for the work !

Quite useful. I was already using the skeletal structures but the idea of using contours line to define form was new. I'll have to remember that.

Really useful... Thank you! I have a lot of problems with the anatomy so when i draw something from my head without references the result is really bad ._. In my drawings the poses of the subjects are always static. I'am not good at drawing landscapes too. These things make me sad ._.

I feel like I really, REALLY needed to see this. I've been pulling SO many of my artistic muscles lately by being so hard on myself because of how little I feel I am improving. But reading advice such as this and talking with other artists helps me to overcome those worries and just keep trying for my goal.
Thank you for the posting. I'm definitely going to be referencing back to this in the future when I need to refresh my mind.

It is helpful. Though these are basic steps anybody can learn in a novice art class one, like myself, tends to forget to keep it simple. Thank you for the reminder and I greatly appreciate the advice you took the time to write, spelling mistakes or not lol

Thank you so much! I can't tell you how many nights I've gone to bed feeling horrible because I just "wasted hours of time on crap".
I'm too hard on myself when things don't come out perfect or what I had envisioned.

I really like both of these tutorials. I have that problem of "If I'm going to draw something, it damn well is going to be a finished piece." I just get this feeling that doodles and "sketches" are a waste of paper. >< Which I really need to deviate from. Seeing your thumbnails and how "scratchy" they are really makes me feel better about my own. Haha I always notice that my little thumbnails have better anatomy and perspective than my bigger drawings. It's like I suddenly forgot how I managed that angle.
I also feel that your "Extra notes" can apply to anywhere in life, not just art. There are many people who push themselves to the point of giving up because they over stress themselves. So, hopefully, I can take what you've said here and apply it to more than just the art side of my life.

Wow, you came out with these at a good time. I've been setting out to improve and practicing figure drawing recently. I started slacking because I was so busy with school, but I always try to set aside time, if I cant I just make weird poses with my left hand and try to draw it cause I'm so bad with hands! I never liked to recognize these things but if I want to be a flexible artist I have to get better at the things I don't like. I used to draw animals only till I kicked myself into drawing humans about a year ago. Even though there was this huge gap, my animals could look really great and I couldn't get out of flat-anime block figures with no form, I thank myself for the doodles I cover in shame now because just getting myself to draw things I didn't usually has made me improve so much.

see...I do a lot of these techniches already...skeleton...simple shapes...transparent drawing...the proportion and perspective STILL end up off. It's very frustrating.
Thank you for number 5 in the bottom area though.
I recently had somebody tell me to hide my old art from myself and not look at it until I had improved and not to work on my made-up creatures until I had improved. That's very disheartening.
I have spent the last 2 days drawing mostly nothing but chairs. I have definitely improved today from yesterday, but chairs are not really what interests me.

An art teacher also told me to take a sketchbook with you everywhere. Go to galleries, draw sculptures and people in public, write little notes next to each to keep track of what it makes you think or inspires you to do.
..... Then you can also claim these trips on your tax return. XD

Yes. This. Thank you. I think most tutorials miss this point and you nailed it right on the head, so thank you for that. This series has been very educational, and I hope you continue to do more along this line. ^-^

Thanks so much for this. When use some of these techniques (drawing and redrawing, photo references) I feel like I'm cheating somehow. I like it when more experienced artists say that it's ok.

You hit the nail on the head with me. I draw so little because I wait for the 'muse' to kick in and it does nothing but harm me. I was thinking of just making doodles but then the perfectionist in me wind up wanting to make it a glory piece and I stress so much to finish it and when I do, 3 hours have gone by and I'm drained for the next few days.
Thank you for posting your wisdom! I'll definitely keep this in mind and in my favorites <3

Your last, orange box of text, actually had me tearing up a little bit.
Yes, I can do this damn it! I just need to practice, practice and practice. Which I've heard from every artist I stalk and can't just seem to push myself to do it because I'm such an utter failure. But now I think about it, and with your big dose of inspiration here, I may just be able to do this.

Awesome as always.
I wish that I could drill into some folks heads, though, "referencing photos is not teh debbil and should be used frequently even after you're a 'good' artist". That it's a way of making a mediocre or even good piece, look that much better. *sigh*
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
hibbary In reply to lethe-gray [2013-01-18 03:38:49 +0000 UTC]
there's this absurd referencing war going on all over the internet where everyone has an opinion but few people understand what's actually legal and what isn't. Granted, this changes from country to country, but still.
That's beyond whether or not it's teh debbil though ha ha.
