Description On one of my off days I began experimenting with cut-out figures and collage. Here is my first little experiment.

Yes yes, Watership Down. Good book. This doesn't really have anything to do with it, though it might have informed me subliminally. It was an unfortunate coincidence.

Beautiful stuff! I always loved the little glimpses of the rabbit mythos you get in Watership Down, and I can ABSOLUTELY see the influence.

Okay yeah first thing that came to mind was watership down, well it was a book/film of my childhood! However I love celtic style you did for the spirit rabbit, which really brings it away from any franchise.

I love the flow of the two rabbits and the contrast of their forms, especially the realistic look of the rabbit on the left compared to the curled lines and 'artistic' feel of the other, the background makes them stand out and gives it a more surreal look.

This is just perfect, nothing more to say! I simply love everything about it: the colours, the pose of the rabbits, the watery structure in the background and the details, especially on the spirit rabbit. It actually doesn't look like a collage, but thats not a bad thing I think and is probably due to the fact, that a scan can't really mirror the 3d structure and different layers of a collage.

How did you do the lighter spots in the white rabbit? I love to read and you said this was inspired by some Native American myth inspired fiction...Can you tell me wich one exactly? A story that inspired such a fantastic piece of art can't be bad.

hibbary In reply to Aevintyr [2010-09-02 21:50:50 +0000 UTC]

Both of the rabbits were cut out from paper that had previously been painted with acrylic. It was actually just left-over paint that I didn't want to waste, so I slopped it on some paper and tried some different textures without thinking of what I might make it into later.

The book I'd been reading was Buffalo Gals by Ursula K. LeGuin. It doesn't have Rabbit in it specifically but it did hearken back to all the previous myths I had read in the past.

Bright eyes,
Burning like fire.
Bright eyes,
How can you close and fail?
How can the light that burned so brightly
Suddenly burn so pale?
Bright eyes.

It's one of those unfortunate things a body must just accept. Especially when presented in a place where popular culture is worshiped so strongly (and sometimes exclusively). It could have been worse. It could have been Twilight

I KNEW IT!!! I was hoping this was Watership Down fanart; that's my favorite book in the entire world! I was so attached to all the characters and actually very frightened by the Black Rabbit of Inle O___O;;
Nobody could have made this as charming. I've watched your gallery for several years now and I'm so glad that you drew this! Well done darlin'~!

ffufi In reply to pookaWOODS-ART [2010-11-18 14:25:27 +0000 UTC]

Maybe it could have just been subconsciously been inspired by BUNNIES?

Richard Adams didn't invent them you know. The concept of those small furry mammals with long ears wasn't new to Watership Down.

pookaWOODS-ART In reply to ffufi [2010-11-20 19:46:21 +0000 UTC]

Wait, what? You mean like there were rabbits actually on Watership Dwown and he wrote a story about them? I remember that he said nearly all of the locations in Watership Down were real.

That spirit rabbit would make for a nice tattoo design. I really like the positioning, it gives it a lot of movement(of the individual rabbits and the circular nature of the two together)

She may have added that comment after they had posted that. Though the style is familiar to that of Watership down, so you can't blame people for that - only for not reading her comment but then not many people do. No need to get rilled up about something so minor, just ignore them.
