Description
Siren had to admit, traveling with her nephew was not what she had expected.
He was just so… arrogant, proud, and flirty. Not with her, thank goodness. That would've been awkward considering their shared lineage. No, it was the way she saw him act around other mares that made her shake her head in confusion.
The colts she had grown up along side had always been relatively well behaved and mild mannered. The closest she could compare him to was Hermes, with how loud and confident they both were. But Hermes was a bully, Anakin was certainly not.
In the weeks since she had joined him she had watched him do it again and again. He would strut over, neck arched and proud. It was nearly ridiculous the sort of display he put on. The lone mares would quickly scurry off, put off by the boldness of the bachelor. But, he did the same thing to herd mares as well- in front of their stallions no less!
The older band stallions usually paid him little mind until he got too close, and would put little effort into chasing him off. The younger, less experienced stallions however, would often take his showy displays as a challenge and attack. Anakin was surprisingly quick on his feet, and smart enough to flee at the first signs of aggression. Occasionally, he'd dance around the stallion, staying just out of reach, and gently tagging their shoulders before racing back to his own little band.
That was the most baffling part for her. It almost looked as if he was… playing? At first, she thought he had lost his damn mind, but no. It seemed he was more interested in honing his skills on band stallions than stealing their mares. And for as arrogant, and brash, and as bold as he was, he had just enough common sense to not get himself killed.
The first few times, she had expected Kenobi to step in. He seemed to have all the common sense her nephew seemed to lack, but he let the stallion go. He always had a snarky comment upon Anakin’s return, but never seemed to put more effort into stopping him than a warning:
“Anakin..”
Eventually, Kenobi told her a bit more about the stallion. He had apparently grown up sheltered and naive. His family was quite loving, but there were always bigger issues at hand, and so Anakin had failed to learn much about what it would be like when he left his herd. He had taken after his father, confident and self assured, without any of the skills needed to back up his personality. Kenobi had found the young bachelor one way or another, and the two decided to travel together.
That was odd as well. Neither boy seemed willing to tell her exactly how they had met, but they were thicker than thieves. Despite Kenobi’s ‘nagging’, as Anakin would put it, she did see that the stallion made an effort to hear him out. Sometimes, on a rare occasion, he would even listen and take the advice he was given… sometimes.
It was easy to be friends with the both of them, and she was quickly brought into their little brotherhood. Yet, as much as she enjoyed the both of them, she felt herself longing for the company of other mares.
Her birth herd was large, with many mares who all shared the duties of caring for the foals, and so she had grown up in a tight knit community of ladies. On top of that, her mother Olympia was nearly as close with the fellow lead mare, Asphodel, as she was with Siren’s father, Slate. The two mares had shared a love for each other not unlike the love they held for their stallion. She had always admired their relationship and closeness, but it had been a long time since she had spent time with another mare. Sometimes, when Anakin would run off posturing for another mare, she almost wished that he would bring her back so she would have company.
It was a bitterly cold day, and the sunlight overhead did little to warm her hide. Beau, the little parrot, was perched upon her rump. His colorful feathers were ruffled up so much she could barely see his head. It seemed he was not accustomed to the cold, but he was trying to bear it as best as he could. Siren craned her neck to the side and nuzzled him, offering him a breath to help warm him up. He chirped gratefully before going quiet again.
In the distance, she spotted Anakin digging through the ice crusted snow, searching for the dead grass beneath it. Behind him, Kenobi kept watch. His thick coat was fluffed up as an icy wind buffeted his mane back and forth. Despite the beauty of the afternoon, it truly was a miserable day.
“Anakin, don’t you think we should move on?” She called, lowering her head against the wind. The stallion looked over at her, blinking dumbfoundedly as if he had just noticed it was windy for the first time. She scoffed under her breath. Boys.
“Well, I suppose we could,” he called back as she trudged her way across the snowy field to his side. Kenobi joined them as well. “Why didn’t you say something sooner if you were cold?”
“I expected that, as a lead stallion, you’d be able to recognize that it’s too awful to be spending the afternoon out here,” she snorted. She snuck a glance at Kenobi when she heard him chuckle, but when her eyes met his, he was quick to hide his smile. Anakin had the good sense to look embarrassed.
“Lead the way, Siren,” he offered, and she did. She turned and led the two towards a distant tree line that encircled the field they resided in. Behind her, she heard the stallion mumble “Do you think there’s a burr stuck in her fur?” She lashed her tail, and smiled when she felt it connect with the stallion’s head. Kenobi snickered and trotted up to join her.
Inside the woods, they found relief from the wind, though it was no warmer. They traveled in silence, the only sound that met their ears was the crunching of snow under their hooves. That was, until they heard what sounded like distant thunder. Siren and Kenobi exchanged a confused look before a blur of red and black darted by with wicked laughter. There was a beat of silence before Anakin squealed and raced off, kicking up his heels as he disappeared after the figures in the woods. Kenobi groaned and Siren huffed, but she still took off after him. She heard Beau squawk indignantly as his perch suddenly raced out from under him.
“Sorry, Beau!” She called, galloping deeper into the woods. Ahead, she spotted Anakin’s quick figure darting between the trees, and beyond him were two horses. The darker of the two was lagging behind, and even from this far back, she could hear their ragged breathing. The group of three climbed a steep hill before dropping into a ravine just out of sight. She heard a startled squeal and picked up her speed, her hooves slipping on the snowy hill.
As she crested the top, she realized too late why she had heard the cry. The dark horse had slipped, and it seemed so had Anakin. She tried to stop, but her momentum was too great, and she had to make an awkward leap from much too high up to avoid careening into the fallen horses. She landed hard on the opposite side of the gulch, the impact jolting up her legs. She whipped around, calling out-
“Kenobi, wait-!” before his golden form slammed into her side. It seemed he had made the same leap, and while he managed to avoid the other two, he failed to miss her as well. She stumbled sideways before she fell to her side, sliding down the steep hill to the bottom of the ravine.
There was a moment's pause as all of them caught their breath, and the two who had originally collided regained their bearings. Siren groaned as she rolled herself upright, glancing over at Anakin and the stranger. She was startled to find that the dark horse was a mare, splashed with white, and covered with intricate, dark stripes. Her piercing blue eyes were just starting to open as she blinked away a dazed expression.
“I’m sorry, miss. I didn’t mean to crash into you,” Anakin said. He had recovered faster from the tumblr, and seemed to be looking for a way to disentangle himself from the mare.
“Damn! You alright, Kaili?” A loud voice called. At the top of the hill was the dark mare, Kaili’s, counterpart. The red mare was flashy, painted with white, and with equally as bright blue eyes and a bright red mane.
“I’m okay, Lyra. Just… need a second,” Kaili said, scooting away from Anakin before grimacing. From where Siren lay, she could spot crimson dotting the snow around her hind leg. It seemed she had been cut open in the tumble.
“No, you’re not okay,” Lyra said, carefully sliding down the snowy bank to join her friend.
“I’m sorry, that’s my fault,” Anakin said sheepishly, climbing to his hooves. He stepped closer to inspect the damage, wary of the other mare should he be chased off, but Lyra seemed much too occupied with tending to her friend.
“Anakin, you have to be more careful,” Kenobi complained, lingering outside the small huddle of horses. Siren slowly rose to her hooves, shaking off the snow from her coat.
“With her leg, she’s not going to be going anywhere quickly anytime soon,” Siren commented, before casting her eyes upward. There was still a canopy overhead, although it was less dense. The shadows were growing long. Night was approaching.
“Maybe you both could join us for the evening?” Anakin mumbled. The dark mare froze, staring up at him with wide eyes. The golden stallion stumbled backwards, trying to back track.” I- I mean just for the night, for safety, and you could leave whenever you want-”
“It’s not a terrible idea, Kaili,” Lyra said, nuzzling her friend. “And I’ll be there too! Plus, he can’t be too terrible. He’s got a mare with him already,” she joked, grinning cheekily at Siren. The blue roan smiled back, and offered the shier mare a smile as well. Kaili glanced at her for a moment before sighing.
“Okay. Just for a little bit,” she nodded. “Will you help me up?” she asked, and Lyra and Anakin were quick to oblige, helping her up to her hooves. She thanked them, but was quick to lean against Lyra and away from the stallion.
“I think there might be some shelter if we follow this ravine for a bit. Follow me,” Siren called, turning and leading the band of horses. Maybe she would finally get the company she had longed for?
