Description

Caine awoke in a dense forest. Birds called and the warm sun filtered down through vivid, green leaves. His coat was full and glossy and it seemed to be dappled from the light that danced across his back. He surveyed his surroundings and noted that he was completely alone, yet this realization brought him no anxiety. He felt at peace as he soaked in the world around him.

A soft nicker called out to him and he glanced around him before spotting a small, sunny clearing. There he spotted a familiar mare. Penryn... Fear and anxiety struck him at once as he searched for Dhamar, who would certainly be nearby. But as his eyes turned back to where the mare had stood, she was gone. In her place was a small filly with patchy white. He observed her with fascination. She radiated a sense of childlike innocence, but he was startled to recognize some of his features in her. It both intrigued and frightened him as he came to the startling realization that this child was his.

He absentmindedly took a step towards her. As he did, her attention was drawn to him. It was the child's eyes that froze him in place. They shined with such bright clarity that he felt as though she could see right through him. And while he recognized her eyes to be the same ones that her mother possessed, he was reminded of Rune.

He opened his mouth to say something, anything, to her but was cut off by a cold gust of wind and a shroud of freezing white. He stumbled backwards in shock, crashing to the ground. Instead of soft, warm grass underneath him, he felt the crunch of snow. He shut his eyes in an attempt to shield himself from the onslaught of winter and suddenly it stopped.

A raspy cough escaped him as he reopened his eyes. He lifted his head wearily and came face to face with Hex. The usually stoic seal bay had a worried look on his face.

"Are you alright?"

"Yes," He muttered weakly, still feeling disoriented. Hex turned and pinned his ears at Midas, who was standing just behind him.

"I told you those mushrooms wouldn't make him feel better!" He snorted and stomped his hoof in anger.

"How was I supposed to know? Midas whined, rolling his eyes and walking off to join the rest of the herd.

"You're sure you're alright? You were moving a lot in your sleep. Did you dream?" Hex asked, turning back to the black stallion.

Caine paused, trying desperately to recall what he had dreamed about, but it had slipped away shortly after he had awoke. He shook his head in confusion.

"I don't know,"
