As she waited, her strong facade started to fade, and she had to admit to herself that, yes, she was terrified of this too. She didn't want Max to know this, of course, because for one he needed to keep his cool, and for another she didn't want to worry the poor guy. She never did.

There was a third reason, but Monica wasn't really in the mood to think too introspectively about things at the moment. Oh god, please hurry back...

Not long after, the front door to Cedric's workshop slammed open, and there stood Max. Max, and no one else. "What? Where's the doc-"

"He's gone! He had an errand out of town and he's not there!" the youth shouted.

Monica's mask cracked a little further. "Oh... oh now what will we do?" she begged, a little more desperately than she intended.

The inventor remained silent for a moment, realizing something. "Monica...there's no one else in town that can help us. No one but me... and you. Monica, we're both the closest things to doctors that we've got at the moment. And you're from the future, even, you probably know more about medicine through basic study than my entire culture knows."

So there it was. Monica had been struggling to keep up a strong face for his sake, when in reality it was up to him to save her own falling spirits. "Max," she began, "you're right! You're absolutely right!"

Just then a strong contraction hit, stronger than the ones before, and she realized she'd have to focus and focus fast. "Maximilian, it's time to put your ingenuity and inventiveness to work. Here's what we're going to need..."
