Description
That lovely moment after Harry snooped in Snape's pensieve.I can just picture Harry sitting little Al down and telling him of the great times he had with Snape.
"And there was this one time that Snape shook me violently then threw things at my face and screamed- I had just seen one of the most shattering moments of my life, seeing my parents in a horrible way. Snape was really sympathetic and acted like a real adult about it."
Snape is such a lovely person- I don't know why Lily went for James when there was Snape around. Sure, he was a
======Edited to add=====
lol! Since lot's of people have something to say when their Snape gets negative attention, here is my answer to you.
He's not a nice man.
He just isn't.
He did some brave things- but I will never think of him as a 'nice' person. He made his choices, and his choices were to be incredibly cruel to CHILDREN (like Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville.)
I admire what all he did in the series, of course, because they were wild feats of bravery, and I just LOVED that whole 'look at me' thing. It was so sad and iconic!
Seeing his love for Lily was very moving.
HE'S STILL A JERK, though. He called Lily the Wizarding Equivalent of the n-word in front of everyone. He was too weak to reject the Deatheaters when he was younger- and that's when he had his chance with Lily. He squandered it until it was too late.
Why WOULD Lily choose him at the time? I certainly wouldn't.
James, for all his faults, grew OUT of his cruelty according to everyone. Yeah, he and Snape still occasionally did things to eachother, but to me there's a distinction in that James was a cocky teenage boy when he did his cruel things and obviously changed or Lily would not have been involved with him.
Snape, upon growing up, continued to be a cruel immature person (in fact he looks like he got worse)- and yet people look over that and jut think of him as a hero. Heroes can be jerks, guys.
Snape is no saint. He is an interesting hero BECAUSE he's not a nice person.
Some people will say: 'but-but Snape was awesome! How could you say such ironic things about him?!?!?!?!?!'
Lol. Get out the books and read some Snape scenes in book 1- remember how cruel he was to Harry (an 11 yr old orphan). Remember how cruel he was to Neville (and he KNEW what sort of life Nev was leading.) Remember how he mocked Hermione's appearance in book 4? ('I see no difference.'
He is a petty man, who I don't think was ever mature enough or nice enough for Lily to want to have a relationship with.
Snape was a Hero. Snape was a total jerk. TWO SIDES OF THE SAME COIN.

I agree, Snape needed therapy and probably some anti-depressants. He was probably such a jerk partly because he was depressed (depression can show as irritability and general unpleasantness, especially in men.) Actually,Β most of the characters needed therapy especially Harry during the end of his 4th/5th year, he witnessed the murder of a classmate, a dark psychotic wizard come back to life and torture and try to control his mind and yet no one did anythingΒ about it; he was showing signs of depression and PTSD all over the place, poor guy. Unfortunately wizards apparently don't have therapy or have any knowledge of psychology so no one gets any help, which is probably why there are so many screwed up wizards/witches running around.

He was a jerk, I agree. But on one hand, he had to act that way. He was under cover. He was a Death Eater and Head of Slytherin House? What do you expect? Rainbows and puppies?
An 11 year old orphan, Harry? And Neville? WHY would Snape feel bad for him if he went through WORSE things? He had a terrible childhood. He had a terrible entire LIFE. Harry was famous, had friends, had love, had his parent's love and his friend's love. Snape had no one. His parents were cruel and careless and he was alone because of the bullying he received from James and Sirius (who tried to kill him) in school.
How would YOU turn out if your life was like that? I agree. He was a JERK and a complete BASTARD sometimes, but really, now. xD There was a reason why he turned out that way. James had great parents, a great life, friends, looks, of course he would grow up to be cocky but he had no reason to bully someone who had nothing of what he had.
We don't know enough about Snape OR James to say such things without an open mind. xD They're characters. We know what we read, and not a bit more. Lily and Snape got along very well. Remember when they would talk? They became very good friends. Until they went to Hogwarts and Snape was sorted into Slytherin and Lily was Gryffindor and met James and the Marauders. That's when the problems started. They grew apart and he loved her and she left him and that was just too much for him, I guess. His only friend? It's sad. It really is. He was still a jerk, like I said, I agree, but you can't say that he was like that because he chose to. Maybe his heart or whatever wasn't strong enough to deal with the things he went through and hence developed a very strong and bitter defense mechanism: insults. Wow. That was long. o_O Sorry. Uhhh. I really like this work of yours, anyway. Hehe. I like their robes and Harry's expression.

Defense against Neville? 11 year olds? Seriously- I don't care how bad a person's childhood is- no reason to be a jerk to defenseless students- Neville never did a THING to Snape. Harry didn't act out at him either, really. He was a good kid.
π: 0 β©: 1
AdriiiSnape In reply to Hillnerd [2009-06-13 00:59:55 +0000 UTC]
They were both good kids. I never said Snape had any defense to be a jerk. Harry always did suspect Snape, though. In the first movie/book when he looked at him for the first time, remember? And ever since then Harry was a bit off-ish towards Snape which only grew with Snape's own attitude. But still. I mean, they were just kids, but I guess I'd be bitter if I were Snape too but maybe I wouldn't be that cruel. It would have been extremely difficult for him to look at Harry everyday but he didn't have to act so cruel. That's the difficult thing about Snape's character. He's so complex. He's both good and bad. He's in the middle. ;D I just find him so interesting because of both him evil side and cruelty and his heroism and need and want for redemption.

I think the calling Harry James thing is only in the movies, but in the books, Molly accuses Sirius of acting like Harry is James, while I think Hermione says Sirius is encouraging them to make trouble for Umbridge because that's what he'd do if he were stilla s tudent.
BTW, I like your comments on the shoelaces scene. LOL.

Okay, i love all your work but i had to comment this.
YOUR OPINION OF SNAPE IS PERFECT.
Literally, it is the exact same thing that i think and that everyone gets on my case for thinking.
Yes, he was a hero and blah blah blah.
Im not taking away from that and i also think he added depth to the story and was an interesting character.
He was also an immature prick who took pleasure out of antagonizing (sp?) children and couldn't let go of a grudge to save his life.
And people are always like "no way! he totally cared about harry enough to risk his life for him!"
Newsflash people, HE HATED HARRY.
he only cared about one person (lily) and even then he didnt care enough about her to change his ways until it was too late.
The only reason he "turned good" (Which he didnt; he turned to the good side. He did not become a good person.) was to try to get back in lily's good graces even though he was the reason she died and he also made her son's life a helll of a lot harder than it needed to be.
Also, i just want to point out that yes, i totally love james because he actually grows as a person and tries to make himself better. (AND HE'S HOT! but i didn't say that...)
so in conclusion, you rock. (and so does harry potter.)

Very nice picture. And LOL at your comment. Something tells me Harry won't be getting too specific with his reminiscing.
I have to say, Snape's one of my two favorite characters from the series (the other being Lupin), but his being a complete bastard is part of why I love him. When he made fun of Hermione, I just bust up laughing, because what an awful thing for a teacher to do to a student, in front of other students.
But I do think he was tragic and heartbreaking, and deserved better than the crappy death he got. Yes, he made some horrible mistakes as a teenager, but he tried to make up for them, in probably the only way he knew how to. And I don't think he was likely as cruel to all the other children. I think he seems crueler primarily because of who we're seeing the story from. He hated Harry because Harry was James's son, and the physical proof that James got Lily and not him. He hated Hermione and Ron for being Harry's Remus and Sirius. And, I think, he treated Neville so horribly because if Voldemort had gone after Neville instead of Harry, Lily wouldn't have died. Not that any of those things are the kids' fault, of course, or even that they'd have changed them if they could. "Don't take it personally, Nevile. He just really wishes you'd been murdered as an infant."
Yeah, Snape's a bastard, but I love him anyway.

I know this is crazy old, but this is possibly the best line I've ever read concerning Snape's attitude towards Neville. "Don't take it personally, Nevile. He just really wishes you'd been murdered as an infant." It's hilarious yet morbid, and spot on!
Oh, also, nice picture! Snape's rage is really great, as is Harry's total befuddlement/fear/imminent freakout. Anyway, I still dislike James, and think Snape's awesome, but they were both total jerkfaces through the majority of their characterizations. I'll leave the reasoning and debate to others. I've got my own analysis. My take on it? Like who you like, fictional characters really don't care.

Like J.D. (from Scrubs), Snape would probably be his favorite HP character because he reminds him of Dr. Cox. He'd be like, "I love Professor Snape, he's like Dr. Cox. I don't know whatΒ yourΒ problem is Harry,Β names like idiot and dunderhead are terms of endearment, it means he loves and cares about you. It's when he stops insulting and yelling you that you have to worry." (I've been watching old Scrubs episodes on Netflix, it's hilarious and J.D. is adorable.)

This is a great piece. It really catches Harry's panic and Snape's furious anger.
And your explanation of Snape is AMAZING. Truly, I was never one of those fans who claimed to know all along that Snape was a good guy, and I had to be convinced pre-DH. The ONLY point I actually felt the major sympathy/liked him (as many people felt for him from early on) was when he was a child and friends with Lily, BEFORE he insulted her.
I have nothing to add to your description of Snape. I feel it fits JK's characterization to the T.

I just want to say thank you for this. Personally, I like the character of Snape -but that doesn't mean I like who he is. Snape is not a nice person. Snape was a full-on Death Eater who was one of the Inner Circle before he happened to realise the one muggleborn he actually cared about was going to be exposed to very certain death.
And even then, he was completely prepared to throw her son and husband to the wolves without a second thought.
Yes, James was a jerk. He also grew up. Snape, by contrast, spent the vast majority of Harry's life punishing him for the sins of his father. His dead father. From twenty years ago.
More importantly, do any of the pro-Snapers even read the parts where he interacts with Neville? What did Neville ever do to him, other than being not brilliant and nervous?
Snape is not a nice guy. And this picture portrays that awesomely.

I also agree with you about Snape. Yes, his childhood was awful, however, I do believe that no matter what happens to us, we are responsible for our own choices and behaviour; at some point we have to stop blaming our past for own decisions.

lol, the expressions are great. I love Harry's look of "Please don't kill me"; fabulous. XD (And is Snape foaming at the mouth? I can't tell.)
Omigosh: someone FINALLY gets is. Sure, Snape was a hero and did some very brave things, but he still wasn't a nice man. (lol PARADOX)
And I don't really buy the Freudian excuse. Sure, his childhood was pretty sucky, but even so, he always had a choice. Take Harry for example: ten years of his life were pretty much devoid of love, and he suffered a lot of emotional abuse (not to mention all that Voldemort stuff he had to deal with.) Or Neville, who grew up basically an orphan, with people all around him being very critical of what he did because his parents were so amazing before they were driven insane, in a rather heroic fashion, may I add; talk about pressure. And don't forget Luna, who saw her mother die right before her eyes. And yet they turned out to be very good people. (Luna was kinda loopy, but we have Xenophilius to blame *COUGH*thank*COUGH* for that.)
His past factored in who he was, yes; but he could have risen above it. It's very tragic, yet makes him rather human.
Sorry. Didn't mean to make it so long. Just got a teensy-bit passionate there...
Anyways: picture's amazing. XD
