Description I signed on to do an entry for the anthology. Because Tamora Pierce is so awesome, we design her characters, and illustrate scenes from her many novels.

I'm doing one from her book Woman Who Rides Like A Man, book 3 in the Song of the Lioness quartet. Just so ya know.

Rispah-- this character-- is essentially Queen of thieves, cousin to George Cooper (who is the Rogue and the pinnacle of awesome). She's described as a "chesty redhead", so... here you go?
She's one of the characters in my scene.

Her clothing is based off of a 14th century corset I own and a German dirndl skirt.
Red hair, brown eyes, fair skin. Corset is part cloth, part leather--the inner part by the ties would be brown leather and the cloth would be a brown/yellow stitched design. Skirt would be a matching brown and the "apron" part of it would be white?
The sleeves tie on, so they're detachable and big enough to store something to kill people with. Corset ties up the front, with an undershirt underneath it (white or something). Trim is white. Skirt has slits so blades can be attached to the calves for easy reach. Also, the collar on the corset/top (which is one piece of clothing) could hide something lethal, I think. I tried to make her sexy while at least somewhat functional. This sort of thing is not my forte (since you'll have noticed by now that, haha, all of my people have no curves or muscles ), but it's actually almost more fun that way.

I didn't color it because I graduate from high school tomorrow and have no time to do anything right now/ am too tired to function properly.

Ah! What!? I missed the whole of the graduation shenanigans?
*SIIIIGH*
Very nice job with the wardrobe. It was very well thought out... from my perspective at least. Tamora Pierce is always great too.

And don't get me wrong about the robes-- those kids in the picture pull it off, and yellow's dandy. Just not on us.

I might be accepting of a yellow cap... just for the yellow. Not so much of the parading around as bananas.

The cap was the best part.

The parading was not. I think it was just the silly walk we were required to do. We practiced for two hours and half of my class still couldn't do it. I don't know if the weird walking thing is standard... I don't know-- did your ceremony overflow with pomp and circumstance?

I feel like I just replied to this... did I just reply to this? Why is this still here?

You did just reply to this... This is very strange.

They always tried to get us to do the fancy walk things at gradutation, and every year, the whole class would just ignore all instruction and parade to their spots at any pace they liked.

I spent the whole parade trying to hurry people along even further, because all I could remember was how tiring it is to play pomp and circumstance for that long as a band kid. As for the walk.... yeah, it would have looked fancy, but it never was gonna work anyway.

We did the exact same thing. One of the best parts of graduation is watching the band kids roll their eyes every time one of the teachers supervising told us to prance in time to the music. "The band is enthusiastic! Why can't you be?!" **conspiratorial eye rolling**

That walk is just doomed from the get-go.

I've been falling behind. I hardly rambled at all about the shenanigans. Mostly I just lamented the idea of having to wear the graduation robe. The boys wear navy blue, and the girls wear... this horrid color . The only difference between my class and these kids is that most of us are overweight and Caucasian, so even more dazzling.
I need to update my journal...

Thank you! This era of clothing is the only kind I really love to draw (partially because I wish I could get away with wearing it once in a while to places besides Renaissance fairs, haha).

Tamora Pierce is fun. I never get tired of her books.

Wow... That's bright! It's one of those things that almost needs to be covered in colored polka-dots, or streamers, or possibly flowers just as an announcement that it doesn't HAVE to be taken seriously... Except, in your case, it's actually supposed to be taken seriously.

HippieLlama In reply to mooing-duckerberry [2011-07-06 01:18:38 +0000 UTC]

We thought even just covering it in another color would work, but our school principal didn't approve of our petition to wear anything but mustard yellow. It glares like that under bright lights, so we're like bananas... *sob*
Or something like that.

I think if it didn't have to be serious, it'd be better. I like your idea of streamers and flowers. It might be... well, not "cool", but "cooler".

Nice pose, full of attitude ;D that's pretty cool, a comic series that allows the readers to design the characters!

Haha, thank you!!

Well, it's a fan-made anthology. The project leaders thought it would be cool to make it and send it to the author to show how much we love her novels.

I like your design for her. You probably want to shrink her head a bit, though. Also, her chest is a bit lopsided- the left breast is about two cup sizes smaller than the one on the right. I'm not really sure where her undershirt is, since I can't see it. The skirt and corset are just awesome.

HippieLlama In reply to Sohalias-Light [2011-06-26 03:51:21 +0000 UTC]

I noticed the giant head, and her chest is lopsided, now that you mention it. It's a combination of the angle she's at and my lack of anatomy study, I think.
As awkward/hilarious as this sounds, I'm a rather... full-figured woman, and yet "chesty-ness" is really hard to draw.
I hid the undershirt amongst the ties, so I'm not surprised it's invisible.

And thanks. I love this sort of clothing.

Thanks so much for the feedback!!! I don't have time to fix this, but I'll make sure I take it to heart for future drawings (gotta work on that comic entry...)!!!!

We all have our tough things to draw. Mine happens to be men. Anything lower than the shoulders and I get a bit dodgy.

We chesty women gotta stick together.

I know exactly what you mean. Though looking through your gallery, I actually think you do a pretty fantastic job drawing men.
For me, chests and hands seem beyond me.

Haha, cheers.

Haha, is that by any chance?

They're good books! Some of the early ones are a little juvenile in writing, but the stories are amazing. Lots of medieval stuff and strong independent women.
I can lend them to you--any of Tamora Pierce's books, really... I own them all -- anytime, if you want. 8D

Do I?
They're a little lopsided, but... boobish? XD
And thanks. I'm always fiddling with character's hairstyles.

And thank you so much!!! I'll miss you too.
Though you are more than welcome to visit here over the summer/holidays or in Providence any time you like.
