Description
The next morning, Alex woke up inside her lamp. Still a bit woozy, she first took care of Cindy, her new pet chinchilla. She conjured up some rodent food and placed it inside the cage where she had put Cindy for the night. The little creature was still very frightened. It was obvious that her human mind hadn't adapted to its new form yet. But, when Alex placed some food pellets in the cage, Cindy reluctantly crawled out of the corner and started nibbling the pellets. Alex even tried to pet the chinchilla and the little animal didn't back away. Suddenly, Alex saw something strange: small, purple dots developed on her hand, which rapidly spread and combined. Quickly her hand was turning purple; the rush was creeping up her arm. Alex turned and hasted to the mirror on the lamp's wall. To her horror, she saw the purple rush spreading over her body until all of her skin had turned purple.'What the....' Alex though. She looked back at Cindy. 'Could it be... maybe Grace was right and this was her punishment for making Cindy her pet?' Alex hurried out of her lamp to ask her friend.
Outside the lamp, Alex surprised Grace, who had just finished her morning toilette.
"Morning, Alex... whaaaa! What happened to your skin?" Grace shrieked.
"I don't know! It happened when I fed Cindy this morning." Alex explained.
"Cindy?" Grace asked.
"My new pet chinchilla." Alex answered.
That moment, there was a knock on the door. "Grace? Is everything ok?" Max asked. "I thought I heard something."
Grace opened the door. "I'm fine, Max, but something is wrong with Alex."
Max rushed into the room. "Good morning, Alex. I guess your skin color is not normal for genies?"
"There are colored genies too, like Sami. But we don't change our skin all of a sudden." Alex explained.
"You stay here; I'll go and get Martha." Before Grace or Alex could answer, Max rushed out of the room.
"He's so cute like that. So overprotective." Alex said.
"Yeah, he surely is." Grace laughed. "But he's right. He better get Martha here. Cause I have no idea what's wrong with you. Unless... Alex, may I take a picture and send it to my mother? Casey is a more experienced witch. Maybe she can help us."
"Sure thing!" Alex said.
It took Grace a few minutes to take a picture of Alex with her mobile phone and send the picture, together with a short text message to her mother. When she had finished, Max returned with Martha's lamp. When Max rubbed the lamp, a green-skinned and red-haired Martha appeared. "Greetings, Master. I'm Martha, the genie of the lamp. I will grant you.... Oh it's you, Max. What happened?"
"Martha?" Max was perplexed. "Why is your skin green? Did it get you, too?"
"My skin? Oh, that's my normal genie skin. A few months ago, I took on this color as my normal skin color. I didn't like my human skin color anymore."
"Martha, we need your help with Alex." Grace interrupted.
"Hello, Alex. Did you try out another skin color too?" Martha asked.
"Definitely not!" Alex replied. "I'll better tell you the whole story: yesterday, I transformed an evil woman into a chinchilla, which I kept as a pet. This morning, I fed my new pet, when suddenly, my skin turned purple. It started with my hand touching the chinchilla and crept over my whole body. Do you think it is some kind of karmic punishment?"
"Maybe... You haven't turned the woman back yet?" Martha asked.
"No..." Alex turned a bit red. "I'll better restore her to normal." Alex blinked and the chinchilla appeared in front of her. She placed it on the ground and blinked again. Instantly, the chinchilla turned back into the woman. Alex had even thought about putting her clothes back on the woman.
Angrily, the woman pointed her finger on Alex. "You...You turned me into a mouse. You'll hear from my lawyer..."
"Shut up!" Alex interrupted her. She took a deep breath and grew larger. She continued in a menacing tone: "I punished you because you mistreated that cat. If you dare to threaten my again or if I hear you were mean to an animal, I'll turn you back into the chinchilla and this time it will be for good!"
"I..." the woman snapped for air. Then she turned around and ran from the room.
"I'm glad this is settled!" Alex said. When she looked at her hands, they were still purple. "It seems it didn't work", she said, disappointed.
"Maybe you should give it some time?" Max proposed.
That moment, Grace's mobile phone rang. Grace took the call. "Hey, mom! Yeah, Alex is here! Good to hear that. Wait, I'll turn you on loud!" Grace switched the phone on loud and placed it on the table.
"Hello, girls!" they heard Casey's voice from the phone. "Alex, no need to worry. It looks like an allergic reaction. Magic beings can get it just as humans, but it will take some more drastic appearances."
"What caused it, Mrs. Daniels?" Alex asked.
"Oh, it can be everything. Some plant material, some kind of animal. Difficult to say without further tests. But the good news is, that it will go away when you are no longer in contact with the allergen."
"How long?" asked Alex.
"You got a rather strong reaction, so it will take a few days. But I'll send Grace a recipe for an ointment that will speed up the recovery process. Grace, you should get the ingredients at a local apothecary."
"Ok, mom. We'll go to town at buy the ingredients at once." Grace said.
"Thank you, Mrs. Daniels." Alex said. "I'll wait inside my lamp. Can't have anybody see me like that." She returned to her lamp.
"Max, Martha? Are you coming along?" Grace asked. Max and Martha agreed. "Ok, let's go then." Grace and the others left the room.

I hope you don't mind that I let the business woman off the hook so quickly. It was more a tool to create a catch-22 situation for Alex. Still, Alex is in a difficult situation now, and boy, she'll get out of the frying pan and into the fire before this story is over.

If you look close enough and compare the two pictures of the business woman, you will see that her appearance has slightly changed.

I don't know I should be glad or sad that you didn't notice it. I'm sad that I had to point the pun out to you. But I'm also glad that the changes are so sublte that you though she looks like a normal human.

It's only the beginning of Alex' suffering. Out of the frying pan and into the fire, I'd say. But there will be more characters who will get their karmic payback in this story.

Either that or she'll move into the animal shelter as a new pet.
