Description Martha materialized in a flat that was unknown to her. The person who had summoned her was a slim woman with reddish-brown locks, wearing a dark cat-suit. She was very surprised to see a genie appear out of nowhere. On the table, Martha could see some of the loot from their flat.

Martha immediately had a bad feeling, but nevertheless she was forced to offer her service. “Greetings, Mistress! I’m Martha, the genie of the lamp. I will grant you three wishes. How may I serve you?“

“A genie? Interesting!” the woman replied. “Are there some rules for your wishes?“

Again, Martha felt compelled to answers. “There are. First, you can’t wish for more wishes. Second, you can’t wish that I’m bound to you for longer than it takes to grant your three wishes. Third, I can’t kill and fourth, I can’t bring a dead person back to life. And finally, I’m not allowed to mess with the mind of a person.”

“Wait a second. Not allowed to mess with the mind of a person. So you are technically able to do that?” The woman asked.

Martha tried not to answer, but again, she felt the pain induced by her bounds until she yielded. “Yes, I’m able to mess with the mind. But I have to warn you. I can only plant suggestions and the result is always a complete mess. You better not force me to grant such a wish.”

“So you have to grant every wish I state as long as it fits the rules?” the woman asked.

Again, Martha nodded. She had a really bad felling. This mistress reminded her of her former master Gregory, who used the wishes for evil.

“I see! In that case, I command you to return to your lamp until I need your service, genie!” the woman said. Martha felt her body transform into smoke and was forced back into the lamp.

The next day, M. Sprüngli called all members of the hotel to a meeting. It all started last night, when his nephew David called and told him that a burglar had robbed his flat. David had also told him that his flat mate Martha was missing. The next morning, he received a warning from the police that a burglar was active in the city. There had been several burglaries during the last week, some of them in well-secured areas. So, M. Sprüngli called all staff to a meeting. First, he informed them about the burglar and what had happened during the previous week. Then, M. Sprüngli explained his plan: “I’ve ordered a new security system, but until it is installed, we have to protect the hotel by ourselves. Tonight, we will set up guards in case the burglar strikes here. Unfortunately, Martha has disappeared.“

“Martha has disappeared?“ Svetlana mocked. “Maybe she’s somehow connected to the crimes? I mean, there’s a burglary in her own flat and she disappears.”

“Shut up, Svetlana!” David said angrily. “Martha, Amelia, and I were at the Christmas Market this evening. After we dropped Amelia off at the hotel, we returned to our flat and discovered the burglary.”

“So where’s Martha now?“ Svetlana continued to ask.

“I don’t know. And it’s none of your business, Svetlana!“ David was really annoyed now.

“That’s enough! The two of you!“ M. Sprüngli interfered. “Now we have other things to take care of. Can I count on your support for tonight?“ Most of the members nodded. “Alright! Let’s plan the shifts and who will be guarding which floor.“

A few minutes later, M. Sprüngli dismissed the assembly. David was still angry about Svetlana but also very worried about Martha and the coming night. He wandered the lobby of the hotel when his eyes caught another genie lamp sitting on a pedestal. Martha had warned him about the genie Sami, but David knew he would need any assistance he could get. And so he rubbed Sami’s lamp.

Sami appeared in a cloud of blue smoke. “I’m Sami, the genie of the lamp. I will grant you one wish and one only!“ he introduced himself.

“My name is David and I’m a friend of the genie Martha. I, or better Martha, need your help.”

Instantly, Sami looked worried. “What happened to Martha?”

David told Sami what had happened the evening before. “Now I don’t know where Martha is, but I have a really bad feeling. Will you help me find her?”

Sami didn’t waste a second. “Of course I will help you find Martha. She’s very special to me, you know.“

In a strange way, these words hurt David. He had to admit that he was developing feelings for Martha, too. Now he would have to work with a genie who seemed to be a competitor for Martha’s affection. Still, there was no question for David that Martha’s well-being was what mattered most now. So he spoke to Sami. “Would you grant me any wish we need to rescue Martha?”

Sami put on a grave face. “I normally don’t grant more than one wish. And I’ll do this for Martha only. I agree, David. But be assured: If you use a wish for another purpose than to rescue Martha, I will make you regret that wish.”

“Don’t worry Sami. Currently, my only concern is to help Martha.” David and Sami shook hands. “And now let’s see how we can find Martha.“

It took several hours until the thief summoned Martha again. She was standing on the shore of the lake. It was already night. “Good evening, Mistress. How may I serve you?“ Martha asked.

“I have a wish indeed. But I have to warn you: I made some research about your kind. I know now that I have to phrase my wish carefully or you will twist it,” the thief announced.

‘Great!’ Martha thought. ‘Now it will be even more difficult to get back at her. “Before you state your wish, may I at least know your name?”

“You can call me Mistress Franziska, genie!” the woman replied. “And now for my wish: Genie, I wish that you give me the ability to climb even the most difficult building, but without turning me into an animal or a machine.”

Martha thought for a moment. The addition prevented her from granting the wish the way she first intended. But then, she had an idea. “Your wish is granted, Mistress Franziska!”

Instantly, Franziska felt her body becoming more agile. She also felt her nails sharpen and her hearing being considerably improved. Then she felt a strange feeling on her back.

“What did you do to me, meow?” she asked.

“Look for yourself!” Martha pointed to the water of the lake.

In the reflection, Franziska saw that her ears had grown into the ears of a cat. Also her nails had grown into a cat’s claws. A tail was growing from the end of her spine. But the rest of her was still human, though her body looked even more athletic now. “Didn’t I tell you not to turn me into an animal?” she complained.

“And so I did. You are now what some people call a catgirl. You are not a cat. I granted your wish as commanded.” Martha explained.

“But looking like this, I’ll be easily recognizable!” Franziska complained.

“You should have thought about that before you made you wish.“ Martha replied, ice cold. “But now you can climb as good as a cat.”

“Grrrr…” Franziska wasn’t happy at all. “Alright, let’s put my new ability to a good use. Back into the lamp, genie!” When Martha was forced back into the lamp, Franziska fastened the lamp to her belt and walked towards the place she had chosen for her next heist: The Grandhotel.

Oh yes! The character development is the best part. Not only for the story, but it adds to how and why she grants wishes certain ways. It make all the difference, and you do a great job.

(laughs, claps hands) Good one, Martha!

(just hope any further wishes aren't too much trouble)

Since cats can be really cruel, I'm afraid the next wishes will be. But don't worry, last wish will kill the cat (metaphorically speaking).
