Description The next morning, the police were called to the hotel to investigate the burglary. Of course, all employees of the hotel had to testify. Lucky, David could convince Amelia not to say everything about the catty appearance of the burglar. Svetlana, on the other hand, wasn’t very cooperative at the beginning. But the argument that the police would hardly believe a story about a cat girl and, in the worst case scenario, would investigate the circumstances and thus find out about the genies, convinced Svetlana to play along. David didn’t know that it was the latter, since Svetlana had her own genie at her service.
While David waited to be called into his uncle's office to testify, he summoned Sami.

“Hello David. How can I serve you?“ Sami asked him.

“You don’t have to act this way, you know” David said, in a friendly fashion. “But you could change into a less suspicious appearance. Besides, the police will ask for a description of the thief. But I don’t want to give them the description of the cat girl. I still wonder why she looks that way.”

“My guess: it’s the work of Martha.” Sami, now with a human skin tone and in human clothes, replied. “That’s exactly her style, to twist a wish.“

David frowned at these words. Martha might be a nice person but the idea of being transformed as a result of a twisted wish gave him goose bumps. “Sami, can you make a picture of the thief as she looked as 100% human? I want to give it to the police. It might help them find the thief and Martha.”

“If it helps them to rescue Martha I will grant that wish!” Sami says and blinked. A paper with a pencil drawing of the thief appeared in his hand. He passed it to David.

“Thank you, Sami.” David said as a policeman led Babette from M. Sprüngli’s office and brought in Amelia.
When Babette passed the sofa group, she glimpsed at the picture. “Hey, I know this woman. She was a guest in our hotel a few days ago.”

“She was a guest in our hotel?” David was totally perplexed. “That’s the cat burglar!“

Babette's mouth popped open. “We have to tell the police.”

“Sure. Do you remember her name?“ David ask.

“No. But I can find out.“ Babette and David rushed to the front desk. A few minutes later, they had not only found out that the cat burglar had rented room number 49 only a week ago under the name of Katharina Schmidt, but also some good video footage of her checking in from the surveillance camera. With these results, they informed the police.

“So, the thief rented the same room as she broke into last night. But nothing was stolen from the room.” Commissar Matthäi summed up after David and Babette told him what they had found out. “Who had rented the room in between?”

Babette checked the booking information in the computer. “That was a Mr. Aaron Bloomenberg, New York. He’s a banker, who was in town for business last week. He was supposed to stay another night, but checked out yesterday. I don’t know why he did that.“

“So the room was empty when the thief broke in?“ Matthäi deduced. “Maybe Mr. Bloomenberg was the target and she just missed him. We’ll inform our colleagues in New York. Maybe Mr. Bloomenberg can give us further information. I think that’s all for now. We’ve talked to all the witnesses. If you remember something, you can call us.” The police said good-bye and left the hotel.

Now M. Sprüngli addressed his employees. ' I’d like to thank all of you for your help during the last 24 hours. Especially Amelia, who heard the thief from the floor. Who knows what the thief would have done otherwise. As promised, those who were on watch last night have the day off. The rest of you get back to work.”

When the group had dissipated, David returned to Sami and told him what the police had found out. “This makes no sense. How did she know that the banker would be in that room?” Sami said. “It’s more likely that she would return to this room. Did she steal something from it? Or why did she rent it a week ago?”

“Good questions!” David admitted. “We can ask Amelia. She surprised the thief last night.“

Both went to Amelia’s room. Amelia was about to change for sleeping but she answered their questions. “As far as I know, this terrible person didn’t steal anything from the room. But when I surprised her, she was doing something to the vanity. I can show you if you like.”

“That would be good. “ David said.

Amelia led David and Sami to room No. 49. The police had already finished their investigations. “It was this vanity.” Amelia declared and showed David and Sami the piece of furniture. “She was doing something on the left side of vanity. About here.”

“May I?” Sami began to search the vanity. It didn’t take long until he found a loose piece of wood. Skillfully, he removed the wood. There was a secret compartment behind it, but it was empty. “I guess she returned to gather something from the compartment. Most likely, she stored it inside when she rented the room earlier. Which brings us back to the question why she rented the room in the first place.”

“I have an idea!” David said. “If the cat burglar is active for a few days, maybe there’s something in the papers about her heists. Let’s get to the lobby. We have plenty of papers there.”

Soon, Amelia, David and Sami were browsing old newspapers for information about the heists. It was Amelia who found the right clue. “Here, how about this: a break-in in a security firm here in town? It’s unusual, yes but everything fits: the circumstances fit, it’s the very night the burglar was here in the hotel. I wonder why it is such a small notice only.”

“Now, this is bad publicity for a security firm. I doubt that they will tell us anything if we ask them.” David said. “I still don’t understand what is going on here… We are at a dead end.”

“How about you wish us to the place where the thief hides.” Suddenly, Amelia proposed something. “Sami, you’re a genie, right? Can you teleport us to this place?”

“I could, but what if we run into the thief.” Sami stated his concerns.

“Do it! I wish that you to teleport us to the thieves hiding place.” David said.

“Your wish is my command.” Sami blinked and all three disappeared from the lobby.

Amelia, David and Sami reappeared in an empty but messy hotel room. It was not in the Grandhotel. On the desk, David found a writing block with the hotels name. “Hotel du Lac.” he said. “It’s another big hotel here in town. My uncle knows the owner.” He took a look around. The thief was nowhere to be seen. “Are you sure this is the right place, Sami?”

“This was her last hiding place, I swear!” Sami was a bit upset. “Do you question my powers?”

“’No, I just thought… nevermind.” David replied. “Let’s see if we can find some clues.” His words didn’t ease Sami at all. The three started searching the room, when they heard he key in the lock. “Too late! Quickly, hide us Sami!” David commanded.

“With pleasure!” Sami blinked with a wicked smile and disappeared. David felt a strange wave washing over his body. When he looked down, he saw that he was wearing the same maids uniform as Amelia did. A quick look in the mirror confirmed his worst thoughts: Sami had turned him into a female maid!

This moment, the door opened and a policeman entered the room. “I’m sorry to interrupt your work, ladies, but this room is now a crime scene. I must ask you to leave.” David and Amelia hurried to leave the room. David, who went first, nearly ran into Commissar Matthäi .

“Wait a second, lady. What have you been doing in this room?” the commissar asked him.

“What do you think? My job. I was cleaning the room.” David replied in his new female voice.

“Did you change much of the room yet?” Commissar Matthäi asked.

“I just started cleaning the room. I hardly changed anything. It’s basically as I found it: left behind by the last guest after checking out.” David explained.

“Alright, the room is a crime scene now. Please proceed with your work in another room. I’m sure there is plenty of it. By the way, we need your fingerprints. To distinguish yours from the burglar’s.” Commissar Matthäi pushed his way into the room.

Meanwhile, Amelia had sneaked away from the policemen to an empty cart with cleaning utensils. David joined her. “We have to hurry back to the grand hotel. Sami must be in his lamp. He must transform me back.”

“Easy, David. If we run away now, the police will become suspicious. Let’s clean another room first. Maybe we can talk to the hotel staff and find out where the thief traveled after checking out.”

“You are not serious!” David replied.

“I am. And now, I can show you what it means to work as a maid!” Amelia replied and headed for the next room.
