Description
Give them an second chanceMartha and Amelia materialized in shoddy flat. "Are you back, Heinrich?" asked a woman. When Martha and Amelia looked, they saw the woman Martha had turned into a black person one year ago.
"Oh no! Not you again! HELP!" the woman cried.
Suddenly, there was the sound of quick, heavy steps on a stair outside. A few seconds later, the door burst open and Heinrich, still a black man, stormed inside. "Gerda, what's going on?" Then he saw the genie. "What... what are you doing here? Was it not enough to ruin our lives?" the man asked seemingly frightened.
"Keep calm! We came to see if you had learned your lesson." Martha explained.
"Will you turn us back, mighty genie? Please! We learned our lesson." Gerda quickly assured.
"You may not know what mess you put us in." Heinrich tried calm down the situation. "You left us with no identification. For the authorities, we are illegal refugees. If they catch us, they will deport us somewhere to Africa. We can't take a real job, we can't go and see doctors. Please help us. We've learned our lesson!"
Martha turned to Amelia. "What do you think? Shall we help them?"
Amelia thought for a moment. She remembered how these two had chased here and if it hadn't been for Andy, they might have killed her. Personally, she didn't want to turn these two back. But she had promised Martha to help her restore her victims: "Martha, I wish for them to have legal papers that will solve their quarrels with the authorities."
Martha thought for a moment. Obviously, Amelia was still angry at them an wanted them to stay black people. But she, Martha, really wanted to give them a second chance. Luckily, the wording of Amelia's wish opened her a loophole. "Your wish is granted!" Martha blinked.
Immediately Gretchen and Heinrich's skins began to lighten until they were the Caucasian couple they originally had been. Gretchen sank to her knees. "Oh thank you very much!" she said.
Heinrich didn't seem so enthusiastic. "Thanks!" he said briefly. "And now you leave us alone."
Martha suddenly had doubts if she had done the right thing. She gave Heinrich an intimidating stare. "Not so fast. Did you really think I would let you off the hook so easily? If course I added a safe guard: If you two will ever commit a racist act again, the second part of my spell will kick in and you will spend the rest of your sorry lives as cockroaches."
The couple fell silent. Heinrich was the first to speak again. "You can't do that. How dare you, you..."
"Carry on," Martha interrupted him with an impish smile. "and you might trigger the safe guard. Then it will all be over quickly." Now Heinrich gulped. Martha smiled and nodded. She turned to Amelia, who was looking at her with a gloomy face. "Come on, Amelia let's get out of here." Amelia frowned but stood up. Before leaving the room, Martha turned to the couple again. "And you two: Behave!" Then Martha and Amelia left the room.
Martha and Amelia were sitting in Amelia's living room. Originally, Amelia had shared the flat with Babette, another receptionist at the hotel. But since Babette decided to stay in a strange, sleeping universe as the result of a careless wish, Amelia was the only tenant of the flat.
Amelia was still angry at Martha: "That was not what I wished for. You knew perfectly that I didn't want to have these racists run loose again."
"Be careful what you wish for." Martha laughed, trying to ease the situation.
"Spare me with your genie wits. They deserved to be punished. Now they won't learn their lesson."
"Amelia, didn't you hear what I said? One more racist act and they spend the rest of their lives as vermin." Martha replied.
Amelia pulled a face. "I see your point..."
"It's more humane to give them one more chance but only one. If they screw it up, they will have to live with the consequences." Martha replied.
Amelia nodded. She stood up, went to a cabinet and returned with a bottle of red wine and two glasses. "I guess you are right. Friends again?" she proposed the wine and the glasses.
Martha smiled back. "Friends again. Pour in."
A few glasses of wine later, both were already a bit tipsy. "Maybe I was a bit harsh with those two." Amelia said. "But tell me, Martha, don't you want to see that asshole of a racist inspector being punishes?".
Now, Martha thought for a moment. "I suppose. His attitude was really enraging me too. Say, how would you punish him?"
Amelia smiled wickedly. "Since he's so fond of the old Eidgenossenschaft, I would wish him to the year 1315, directly into the Battle of Morgarten."
Since Amelia just state a wish, Martha was obliged to grant it. But strangely, she agreed with that wish in her mind. Maybe Mr. Oberle had angered her too much, maybe the wine had affected her thoughts. Sending him back to the old Eidgenossenschaft seemed more and more fitting to her. Martha blinked. "It is done."
"What's done?"
"I granted your wish and sent him back to the battle of Morgarten. I hope he likes that time more." Martha giggled.
"You really sent him back...?" Amelia asked. Then she burst into laughter. Obviously, the wine had loosened her inhibitions.
When Amelia was reaching for her glass, Martha reached for her hand. "Maybe You should cut down on the wine for now. Don't forget David will be over here this evening."
"Your right. I can't be drunk tonight. I'm really looking forward to spent some 'private' time with David." Amelia gleamed with anticipation.
"Exactly. We should stop drinking now. So you can have some more wine with David later. Don't worry, I'll let you two alone this night." Martha said, sounding quite patronizing.
Amelia reacted with pretended indignation: "Ha! I would throw you out of my flat anyway, if you don't leave willingly." Both women looked at each other, then they burst into laughter.
Amelia was definitely look forward to the night with David.

Hopefully this last chance will not be wasted on those two and also that the inspector will not change history.
