In my rendition, i skipped a few things he mentioned as they seembed pointless to me, anyway yeah, enjoy.
PS, Not for complete beginners as I made it pretty quick, but those of you that know the basics should understand.

agreed. well the best way to start is by somehow obtaining a FULL copy of photoshop(hope you got some computer smart friends), get a copy of photoshop cs3 if you dont, if you do, get them to get you a copy of photoshop cs4(requires some knowledge of the windows operating system to get it to work without buying it.) Or you could go the legit way and buy it and take a chance that you may never really use it after blowing away 1000 USD.

Hey, nice tutorial! I've been trying to figure out how to do this kinda stuff, and I stumbled on a link to here!
But mind if I ask how you get videos up here on DA? I'm wanting to upload effects and animations, but I'm having trouble.

well you can always request for a video account, since that way you'll actually be able to upload real videos, unlike me, I don't have a video account since a tutorial doesn't actually get categorized as a video. If you get a video account, which I think requires you to submit a sample video of what you need it for and then you may get it. My videos are in swf format, a common flash animation format, at 14 frames per second. If your videos pertain some sort of action and or is a demo reel, then I highly suggest looking into how to get you account into a video one. There are various artists on DA that have it, so ask around if you find people with them. ~gt4ever has a video account, ask him if you want. here is a video of his, not really flashy, but still pretty funny. Ah, I'll have to look into converting my video files then. All I do is run a preview of an animation, then go to the previews containing folder to save the animation, so it's still in windows movie format or whatev.
But hey thanks! I'll look into these movie accounts and maybe get one when I feel like I deserve one!
Nice vid! Could be a lil smoother, but hey, it's better than what I can do right now!

video isnt so smooth as there is a file restriction for non video accounts, the file restriction is set to 29.9 MB, so thats what the video seems really constricted, video frame per second is at 14, sound is at 32kbps MP3, colors is at 65k. yeah, that's why.

Oh I see. Ouch.
What category would I have to put a video in to upload?

for a regular video like youtube type but with much higher quality, like with divx, it would be in Film & Animation, however you won't get this option unless you are given a video account. Now if you don't want to go through the hassle(which i think you should if you want the file cap to be a lot higher), then just put the video as a swf with a gif or jpg preview image in whatever category you think it would best be fit in.

Ah, yeah, I might just go ahead and attempt to get that Vide Account. I'm no good with .gif's and video conversion.

HAHAHAH I did this tutorial that I found online before I even noticed you did it! Lol... Now I have r11... And it looks pretty cool.. But it doesn't have the hard cut edges thats a diamond should... It turned out kinda smoothed looking... I through in a sky texture, a light with an array and some global illumination and this is what I got... iamonds1.jpg"Here

to get the hard edge on your diamond in r11 or 11.5, all you have to do select your cylinder or polygon object, go to phong and change the phong angle to 0. this should give you the hard edges like in the tutorial.

you typed in the link to your image wrong, do a direct link rather than the img links that photobucket gives you, because those don't work on here. anyway that is one big reason as to why i've not upgraded to r11, there, to make this tutorial work, it requires you to do about 4 more extra steps, and with some other things, it requires even more.....too big of a hassle for a non animator to go through.

Well for this sorta thing there may be a few more steps but I think the new r11 just straight up kicks ass! The global illumination is so amazing.. And if that don't tickle your pickle then how bout this: The thing renders much MUCH faster no matter what the model.

Hey, I'm using a newer version of C4D I guess and it doesn't have the fresnel check box in the transparency area and it isn't exactly turning out exact. I had to add a light to get the right affect.

super late reply, lol. But thats the main reason I haven't bothered upgrading, you have to micro manage now, its so lame.

I was mostly referring to modeling, probably works just fine on both of them.

the modeling yes, the materials, they work differently, if you make it in R10 and get it to work right, then save it and open it up in R11 demo, it wont render, all it renders is black....that is really odd.
