Description Hi @ all.

My latest in planet creation. Inspired by a picture of europa in front of jupiter. Many in spaceart have created worlds and named them "earth two". Well, why not mars? Here it is. "mars two"

Created using photoshop and 3dsmax.

Enjoy!

How exactly do you get that incredible detail on the terrain? It looks absolutely amazing!

I work with really high res satellite images taken from our lovely earth. Those get copied, cloned, cut and so on to make a nice big map (8000x4000 pixel) for the planet. You can't really tell its made from satellite images, but that's what gives the planet its details.

Well that's very awesome! So you sort of mismatch different parts of the original Earth map to create a map that you like to use for art?

Also, so 3Dmax then takes that map that you create and sort of wraps it around a sphere?

Thanks for replying!

Exactly like that. You have to blend different parts of the original earth maps together till it looks like a new world. Have you seen my tutorial series on planet creation yet? It's made for Photoshop and 3ds Max and explains almost everything I know about this topic. Have a look at it and if you have questions just ask or note me.

That is extremely awesome. I will definitely consider getting 3ds max!
Oh yeah! I saw those Once I get the software, I will certainly take a more in depth look at them.

Thanks so much, I will do so! Great welcome to DA, thus far

Man, you know what? This is awesome! I really like this work: the 3D effect is so real and the choice of color is great! Impressive!
Now I have a problem: I'm dying to reopen my 3ds max. But I really don't have time to! Holy crap!

Please be careful, if you open up max, you might get hooked again.

Great job on Mars Two, it looks almost habitable ( though, you'd be roughing it ) And I like how the gas giant appears so huge in the backround. I have only seen a few space art deviations similar to this before.

hoevelkamp In reply to Chromattix [2008-04-28 13:12:12 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot. The air is a bit thin and there's no intelligent life on that Mars Two. But it would be possible. The gasgiant is (like the moon/planet) really rendered in 3dsmax so you're seeing just a small piece of it. I gave it a little tilt so the cloudbands don't appear in a straight line, otherwise it would look to flat. That really makes a difference.

Chromattix In reply to hoevelkamp [2008-04-28 23:55:48 +0000 UTC]

I agree that gas giants only look good when they are at an angle, I made sure I did the same with the one in here [link] Its one of the benifits of having a 3D program, since getting that look in Photoshop alone would be very hard

hoevelkamp In reply to Chromattix [2008-04-29 00:18:45 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I remember that one. Great angle. And I agree. 3d programs are a huge benefit to spaceart. I went the whole way from spherized spheres in photoshop via Vue renders to 3dsmax. I think max is as good as it gets. Was hard to figure it out though.

I however, wish you didn't put a giant jupiter in the background because it makes no sense... the planet itself is great, however, although i would've done a background with earth and sol

Well, it makes perfect sense. Have a look at this:

It works like that. We're just closer to the moon/planet. The title "mars two" doesn't mean this is "our" mars. It's just a marslike planet somewhere out there. The picture is meant to be fictional.

Durandal-Thoth In reply to hoevelkamp [2008-04-28 04:12:33 +0000 UTC]

What i mean't is, mars isn't exactly close to jupiter, but your argument of it not being our mars negates mine, so in that case, wonderful job
