The quest to meet my own absurdly high standards continues! I quite like this rugged old guy. Might revisit him.Inspired by this photo by streamy-stock : fav.me/d6eamoj

So cool.
This reminds me of a 1970s fantasy book cover
Or something vaguely Tolkienesque from before the Peter Jackson movies.

There's a scene in a Lovecraft novel, the Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath, in which the protagonist climbs to a hidden valley to behold a monument to a god. I'd go on a climb to check this out.

Does the monument then do something scary? It is Lovecraft, after all! XP I think this old dude is probably nice and chill, though may have been a bit, shall we say, hotheaded in youth.

Actually, the monument isn't scary or dangerous, but it is awe inspiring. The hero's situation--stuck out on a narrow mountain ledge with nightfall approaching--is the real peril.

Oh, it is! I highly recommend The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath. Lovecraft tells it in epic style. As for our hero's situation, it actually gets worse from that point.

This makes me think of a Simpsons-episode where there's a landmark in Springfield called "Geezer Rock."
