Description
EXTREMELY BORING.That much I'll say for myself.
But if any of you have anything any bad comments about the composition of this photo, go take a nature photo with similar minimalism( very hard to find ), better than this. And I'll be open for your negative crit.
I appreciate constructive criticism but I am sick and tired of people who have a ton of crap to say about my photos, yet they don't have a single image that they took to back their blabber. Stop playing mr photo judge and go fucking shoot some photos.
Just needed to get that off my chest!
Dead tree's in the Theewaterskloof dam.

I like it. Obviously I would, because it reminds me of a photograph I took of dead trees in this dam. See Sometimes ... water takes life .
After seeing your version, I took my original CR2 and did the magic to it that I learned from your tutorials. I've posted it here .
Which one do you like more? Eeek ... that is if you like any of them. [Hoe voorbarig van my ]

Wow. This piece is an interesting take on nature. You're right. Minimalism in nature is hard to find. The reflection looks a little strong, but I can forgive you for that.

Very nice abstract shot. I would maybe tone down the lower part of the shot as reflections usually are darker.

Also one of the things of this pic, you have no sense of size. I thought these tree were small twigs. I didn't think they were trees. Even going back and taking a second look they still look more like twigs to me.

You know I have done the same thing with images of mine thinking they are boring, so I won't post them. At least you have the cohonezz to do so. Nice pic.
With a pic you think is boring you get more comments on than I do with pics of mine I think are good.

I find it interesting not boring. I have been trying to get a good shot of a dead tree half immersed in water but result hasn't been as good as yours.

longer exposure to smooth out the reflection would be nice, and perhaps its my eye, but i dont think the horizon is straight.
otherwise i like the composition
the minimalistic approach reminds me of nilgunkara, and a few other photographers.

hehe...nilgunkara is way way way above me... But I took it from a cliff about 10meters up at a long focal length....so long exposure would probably have blurred

Ah i see,
its odd, it looks like you were quite low to the ground
yes, nilgunkara has some stunning stuff
its odd, i keep finding loads of great turkish photographers who work in the same areas
its like their all superphotographers on a mission to take over the world

Lol....yip it's surprising where the great photographers come from. Though America has a habit of producing the best purist nature photographers....But I think it has a lot to do with the nature itself. Many of the best from Europe are from the Bavaria region and Poland...which have absolutely stunning landscapes. Same with Oregon in America. Many world famous photographers are from Oregon

Yeah, I think its all to do with what scenes there are around you
for example, where i live, there are boring landscapes, boring architecture, and boring people.
so that kinda casts out landscapes, architecture, and street
hahah
I can't wait till summer
I'm going on a cruise around scandanavia and russia for 12 days
I'm aiming to take around 200 photos a day, it will be deadly when I get back, sorting through them, but the scenery there is just so beautiful I won't be able to stop mysel.f

you've obviously heard that you'll never exceed your beliefs. If you think you're gonna fail, then you are. If you tell yourself there's nothing to shoot where you live, then you're not gonna find anything to shoot.. You're not gonna get the experience you need to capture other places while travelling. So basically, with that attitude, you're never gonna achieve anything, nor get a single good photo.
People that keep blaming bad photos on gear and location are always waiting around for new gear and better locations and they never get anywhere in terms of photography, because the simple fact is that a good photographer can make any place seem interesting with some decent lighting(weather) and composition. Get off your fucking ass. Stop moping about where you live and get out. Just go to the beach or any field. I promise you you'll be surprised at the results. And you have to practice on the shitty stuff so that you know what to do when you get to the good stuff.

Yeah that is true, and I know that the mind works like that, though the theory is slightly true. For instance, I have never seen a sunset as good as any that you photograph (and its not just the way you photograph them) and we rarely have storms
I've been developing a style that focuses on composition more than the subject and hopefully creates interest from seemingly boring things, but I'd still like a good lightning show once in a while )

We have a storm twice a year and it's always at midnite. And sunsets never look as good to the eye as they do on a processed photo. trust me.just get out and go shoot.

I really love the fact that the tree are getting less contrasted in the water. And the composition gives an impression of stillness!

yea minimalism is a trickly thing. But I dont agree with the other thing u sead. People, even though can\'t produce a brilliant physical product, do know quite a bit about photography and although it can be frustrating. They do have a point.
For instance one of my friends has a canon 400d, knowsa fare deal about composition, camera settings and all that bullshit I get from my ignorant photography teacher but has trouble taking pictures which reflect his mental ability!
Better minimal shot then I could manage though

and thinking about it. I also am really frustrated by some of the picture I am taking. I believe I can take far beter pictures becasue of the experience and knowledge I have of photography. Atleast now I have some more filters, inspiration and am going some where good for once to take photos. My dream photo place. Rocky stormy coastline and long exposure! I suppose much the same as ur shots. But ur already doing it

most of the time remarks about lack of composition are meaningless. the rule of thirds is and should not always be applicable as it sort of generalizes the overall look of a vast number of photos.
that being said, the composition of this photo is lovely!
i am not yet sure whether i like the level of contrast you used or whether i would appreciate a stronger one.
anyhow, i think this photo is just as amazing as the rest of your gallery. keep up the awesome work

beatnik In reply to hougaard [2008-06-20 19:01:13 +0000 UTC]
The rule of thirds is probably more for beginners. My general rule that I learned in art class is that the composition should have balance if you want it to be balanced, and an imbalance if you want it to look chaotic. The intent should be there, and that's what separates the beginners from the masters.
