Well, I think you are just missing a step. Just like painting there are values applied to every part of an image and shortcuts don't work. This pic took about three hours to do.

Ah, I see. I think the problem is that I don't even know what those steps are in the first place. Inking also takes me anywhere from a couple days to a week or two, mostly because I can't focus when working lol.

Take another look at my walkthrough. I don't think you are doing the second step. I think you are trying to achieve results by just applying gradients. Seriously, you probably need to get away from the digital stuff and work traditionally. You'll get it after hours of practice. I improve incrementally over time and you can look through my gallery to see how I've made changes. Stuff I did in 2009 I can barely look at. If you want to get better, work at it. Don't look for shortcuts. Put the time in and you'll see results.
