Ah, I also use multi-layers, in GIMP rather than Photoshop. Do you have any advice with coloring? (Take a look at my gallery to see how I'm doing)

As far as I can tell you're on the right track. When coloring(especially cal shade style) shadows are the key. You are going to have to figure out your light sources and be a bit more aggressive in your colors. Highlights are also important. That's the element that punches up a picture from being dull to dynamic. I don't know anything about gimp so I can't guide you at all there. Keep it up though, you're coming along.

There's this one style I want to try that could be summed up as βmanga-hard-shading-styleβ like shown here. [link] Though I won't be able to accurately apply such a style at this point.

That's not a manga style at all. That's outright American comic style with no feathering. You can do it, just keep practicing.
