Nerf gun paint mod I did for a friend on commission.The green irl is a bit more of a foresty army green... Camera was just being a douche.

All I did was spray painted it with a base olive green, taped off the green parts I wanted black, spray painted those parts black, then brushed it with some acrylic silver. It's super easy and simple to do.

What kind/type of paint and sealant did you use?
I originally just used spray paint and the spray paint sealer however I want to do better/more detailed work this time around.

I found regular spray paint would smell quite a bit and would lose some of its paint job if you were to use it as normal after, even with a sealer. Thanks for the info none the less

If it's still smells, then the paint hasn't dried... Spray paint (or any chemical), no matter what kind, shouldn't smell after it's dry and cured. Try using a primer to help the final coat stick on better.
Also, if you're spray painting a smooth surface, it's more likely to rub off, try lightly sanding it with a 100grit paper. Spray paint works best when it has a bit of a porous surface to cling to.

Hmm that may work, however I am living now where I have no way to spray paint (in an apartment) so I was thinking of tackling hand painting it.
The nerf guns still have a paint smell to them to this day even, could have been the sealer or just the spray paint we used.

its starting to dawn on me just how outstanding nerf weapons look repainted. I only wonder if there is a way of retrofitting them for airsoft.
Myself and a group of friends want to go to a game looking like Halo ODST, but the weapons we use are still modern M4's and whatnot, but this had a really deadly futuristic look to it that i want.

Not very long. The longest points were when I had to wait for each painting layer to dry

That could be it. how many coats did you put on?

2 and a half? Black base coat, some areas got a coat of green, then touch ups by hand along with some silver metalling look.
