Description
This is a stamp to support a person's own style. Art is a form of self expression and choice. No one should have to go by a book and draw like everyone else.SOme people think that people are only going to use this stamp to avoid trying to draw better and it should be required for a person to work to improve their skill rather than just have fun drawing. Nothing against improving your skill. But unless you want a career in art this is not a requirement. Art is for fun. If people want to draw stick figures let them. More power to them. I don't care. Art is for self expression, choice, and most of all fun.
The reason I took off the commenting ability is because I would get the same comments over and over again. There are those who love the stamp and all that it stands for, and there are those who just want to give me crap and say how improvement is more important than style, blah blah blah. It got to be so much and I repeated myself so many times that it has actually become slightly stressful to check my messages. So if you like the stamp, great. If you don't, then leave it alone. I am stubborn in my beliefs and you aren't going to convince me otherwise so stuff it.
Just for those people who still want to say the same things over and over again, I'll say this once.
FIrst of all, this stamp is not here so people can go into my gallery and give me crap for the style I choose to draw in. I draw how I wanna draw. Leave it alone. If you would like to give me constructive criticism, that's fine. But don't fill up my messages with flames about the way I draw.
Second. This stamp is not here so people can go into my gallery and give me crap for drawing fan art. I understand fan art is not completely original. When I say I have my own style, I am not talking about the fact that I draw fan art. It is HOW I draw that is my style.
Third. I understand that some people will use this stamp because they just don't wanna draw better and can't take criticism. I DON'T CARE. If they wanna draw a comic involving lines talking to each other they can. I don't intend to stop them. So they don't draw perfect. It's not the end of the world if they wanna draw stick figures and say that's how they wanna draw. Art is about self expression, not getting everything perfect. If a person wants to develop their skills better, then great. If not, great. It's their choice and that's okay with me. Long live stick figures.
At least they're not stealing art from someone else, or tracing, or taking an outline and coloring it and claiming that's their style. At least they're drawing their own thing their own way.
And for the record, if anyone posts a comment on my page to bitch about my drawing or this stamp some more I'm not even going to answer your comment unless I really have something to say, then I'm going to hide the comments and block the person. I don't give a CRAP what people think of my art. I draw what I want to draw, not what everyone else wants me to draw, the only exception being in art requests/trades/commissions. I am very proud of my style of drawing and how far I have come since I started drawing and am not in the mood to take even more crap from people who can't seem to understand my point in this stamp.

The reason people ''hate'' on this is because your ''original characters'' are just horribly basic with bad anatomy. Not that i give a crap about anatomy (its always good to work on that)
But the faces of your characters are just way to simple they are oval head with ovals eyes and stripes as mouth and nose as i personally really dont see a ''style'' in that. You should do some research on other cartoon characters memorize how other artists draw noses, eyes, lines, eyebrowns pick up idea's. that way you will be able to give your characters stronger facial expressions and improve no wait CREATE ''your style'' at least thats how it works for me.
if you dont want crittic or flames you shouldnt have made this stamp in the first place because its naturally that this provokes people to watch your gallery and speak their mind about it and this stamp. And people use this excuse on deviantart way to much anyway thats why. And im almost 19 just finnished my endwork after 4 years of studying publicity and illustration i can easily say that even i have not yet developed a ''real style'' personall to myself.
other then that some of your creatures where nice and the coloring isnt bad altough i dont know how long your doing this im not saying your art is purely bad it just could use major improvent.
Devianart is one pure pile of azzkissing people's sh!tty art or unoriginal fanart.if your not azzkissing they tell you your automaticly flaming . this stamp embodies that fact alot. thats maybe also why i have no art or friend here.

As mentioned before, regardless of what the "style" is, you still need the knowledge and skills no matter what. Cartoons like Chuck Jones, Yogi Bear, Flintstones, and Rocky & Bullwinkle all has a style but showed some amazing skills as well. Skills will always be more important than style.
You'd be surprised of the many skilled artists on Deviantart, but they're not getting the attention they deserve. And mainly this has to with the obsession with "style" and the badly drawn fanart.

Yes there are Great artists but they are extremely hard to find mainly because Deviantarts stereotype is the deadly truth this site is full of furry's,manga wannabe's,fanart,paintart.... and so on... the best art ive seen here still was Fanart .. and porn.... and to me fanart isnt art thats why i refuse to be a member of this site.
you can even watch better fanart on sites like Newgrounds

Fanart can be art. There are tons of brilliant artists that draw fanart, and do such a fascinating job at it.
Anything can be art, whether it's porn, anime, animals (furries), or fanart. It just depends on the artists themselves.

This is good for when people have a strange style that needs this claim, like Escher or someone.
Of course, the problem is the number of people who are simply BAD ARTISTS finding this stamp and holding it up, saying "See! I'm not bad! It's my STYLE and if you don't like it, STFU!"
Some people have strange styles. I was in a gallery in Vancouver the other day where one artist had a show on: He played with perspective, his people had odd, seemingly random proportions, and the entire thing had a strange feel to it. For all that, he's a brilliant artist and made all the strangeness somehow look correct.
In short, before using this stamp, make sure you're not just covering for your shitty art.

Who's to say what a "good" drawing is? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and art is self expression. It doesn't HAVE to be perfect. Granted it is great to improve, but it isn't required if the artist likes drawing the way they do.

happydoodle In reply to HyperactiveMothMan [2010-06-06 23:01:21 +0000 UTC]
A good drawing consists of knowledge. It shows how much you know and how much you have learned, like construction of composition. It is also not perfect as the artist itself realizes there are certain areas of improvement.
A bad drawing consists neither of it. It tries to mimic composition and construction when it has no idea of it, but thinks it does. And the artist thinks it's fine, mainly from lack of willing to learn.
A good artist doesn't stick with one style. They experiment with many styles. They like to test and see what works and what needs improvement. They study a lot.
This explains the talent of Picasso, Dali, Chuck Jones, John Kricfalusi, Bob Clampett, Tex Avery, Milt Kahl, and all other artists we all wish we could be today.
A good artist's work is never done.
From experience, sticking to one style is a big no-no to me. I made a mistake doing that but I learned my lesson. I now experiment and study hard. Even if I don't have a style, at least I gain some skills and knowledge.

I never have people complain that my fan art isn't in the original style, I just get people complaining that I draw fan art in the first place. XD For some reason people think this stamp is saying that WHAT I draw is the style, not HOW I draw it.

Thank you for making this stamp- it's about time somebody stuck it to all those textbook artists who think that everybody should give 100% percent EVERY and ANY-time, and that style's no excuse for being different (which for some reason gets on their nerve).
I've gotten crap lately about how my style looks weird and amateurish- at least four people so far have acted that way, and at least two nearly drove me away from art with their so-called "constructive criticism". Nowadays, I really don't care what people think about my style or how I do things art-wise. Art doesn't have to look perfect- art is how one expresses his/herself. I hate to sound emo, but it's my style- NOT theirs. They can draw however the fuck they please, but for me- I'll things MY way when and how I want. You're absolutely right, too- don't do art that would please them; do art that would please you.
No offense to anybody who may think the opposite of this stamp has to say, but fuck-screw-and-to hell with them. I agree that it's important to improve one's self by learning new techniques and practicing hard, but those people seem to misunderstand the point of being an artist- it's not how much you know or what you use; it's about having your own style and having passion for doing art. I'm welcome to getting tips from others on how to improve, but don't fucking tell me how to draw- I've been doing it practically my whole life and have been trying to improve myself, and truthfully, the first thing I don't need is some asswipe, pointing out every flaw in one of pieces, then telling me indirectly that it sucks, as if they're stating fact.
There is no such thing as "fact" when considering style- it's all a matter of opinion. They see some artist's work and deem it the bee's knees, but if I see it, I might think that it sucks. As someone great once told me- "Opinions are like assholes: everybody has one, and some can act like one." We artists with different (or "unique") styles will never escape from the people who will have a problem about how we do things- there will always be those kinds of people. Maybe if we all learn to shrug it off, we'll earn some kind of acceptance- until then, all we can do is keep doing what we love, no matter what anybody says.
Again, thanks for making this stamp- I will proudly put it in my stamp collection box and say, "I have my own style- DEAL WITH IT. And if you don't like it, too fuckin' bad."

HyperactiveMothMan In reply to alienfingers [2010-05-21 03:52:05 +0000 UTC]
The only problem with that logic is that there IS no proper way to draw. Art is self expression and you can choose to draw realistically or you can choose another style of drawing.

alienfingers In reply to HyperactiveMothMan [2010-05-21 07:00:14 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, but if you genuinely want something to look good, then you tend to learn how to do more than the pencil and filler tool in order to bet a better looking result in terms of colour and depth.
The kinds of people I see using this stamp are whiny little bitches who couldn't take a crit if it was shot at them, responding with the fact their stick figuure with anime eyes is 'just their style' and demand respect from those who have actually put effort into developing a style, rather than clinging to one under evolved style in the hope that someone will say 'ogm I havent seen that befours!!'.
π: 0 β©: 1
HyperactiveMothMan In reply to alienfingers [2010-05-21 14:12:55 +0000 UTC]
Who cares? If they wanna draw like that, let them draw like that. I mean granted, there are those "whiny little bitches" that will use this stamp, but in reality they're mostly just kids who don't know how to take criticism and when they feel like it they'll develop their skills a little more and until then it's not hurting anyone for a stick figure with anime eyes to be their style. Maybe if they wanna draw for a career they should take some classes and all that fun stuff, but if they just wanna draw for fun I just don't see why it matters.
Okay I'm gonna cut this off before I ramble any more. My point is I don't care who uses this stamp or how they draw. It's still better than those people who trace artwork or take an outline and color it and claim that's their style.

I understand that. My point of view on the subject is that I just don't care if people don't want to improve their drawing. If they want to draw how they want to draw then I'm not going to judge them. Art is art. It is about self expression as well as choice.
I understand your point of view and I admit I may have slightly overreacted. You're entitled to your own opinion, but I still stand firm with mine.

The reason I come to think of when people claim that the worst excuse from an artist is when they say it's their style, is that many unexperied artists make faults in their pictures, and when somebody critizie it, they claim for it to be style just to get away with it. There is probably often where people get that idea from.
The usual thing that makes people critic a certain style is that if an artist is not expiriend enough in drawing, and then one does often not pull it off good enough too make look like a style, and the artist just looks unexperieced. I always claims that it takes a general knowing of how things look to stylize it.
My dad used to tell me that if one is to make for exemple a sword, make it look either realistic or very stylized/VERY non-realistic, because otherwise it's a very high chance that it just looks plain wrong. A good tip for everybody who is looking to improve their drawing-skills is to first practise to be able to draw realistic, and THEN stylize it. But please remember that I'm not jugding anyone now, I'm just talking out of what I think and learnt. No insluts on anyone. I have also been critizied for my style, so In know.
And I know it's not fun to be juged when one like their own style, but I often take it as a chance to improve. Okay, so I draw very small chins, and I like it that way, but if I try to draw a realistic face and won't be able to pull that off because of this, then I should probably practice until I know how to draw a proper face, because this will help me improve LOTS. And then I will be lots better of pulling of my own style. This is how I see it.
But this is of course up to everybody. Just wanted to share my opinion, even if the stamp is not completly new. And this were not meant as an insult to anyone. (:

In my opinion, what that person said to you is not critique. What they said was an insult to YOU. It sounds to me like they might be jealous and I totally understand why you were upset by them and it's good that you don't let what they say affect your art. You're right about art being what YOU want it to be, not someone else and I respect you for that. ^^
