Description
"CHECKMATE"The world's most dangerous man has just gained total control of the world's most dangerous organization.
Following the Crisis where billionaire 'Black King' of CHECKMATE, Maxwell Lord, was revealed to be the Earth bound cause to Darkseids arrival to Earth. Causing Wonder Woman to take his life (or risk the lives of billions in the process), CHECKMATE has found itself without a leader. Soon after the Crisis, the President of the United States, President Peter Ross, calls Bruce Wayne to his office and reveals that the government always knew he was Batman. At first, Bruce seems annoyed, but the President makes it known that he finds Bruce's means effective, and offers him CHECKMATE. After some consideration, Bruce accepts.
Now in control, Bruce makes some changes. The criminal aspect of CHECKMATE is immediatly thrown out, Bruce personally leading to the arrests of criminals inside the organization, and after giving Dick Grayson the role as Batman, Bruce sets up his own camp on the White and Black sides.
First, after giving up her role as Wonder Woman, Bruce convinces Diana Price to accept the title as White Queen, then also brings in his business partner Lucius Fox as the White Bishop, as well as his longtime butler and friend Alfred Pennyworth as the White Knight. Against his better judgment, former CHECKMATE Amanda Waller actually convices Bruce why she should stay in the organization, causing Bruce to give her the smaller role as White Bishop.
Bruce knew exactly who he wanted for his stealthy Black Team as soon as he took on the role: long-time love interest Catwoman as the black queen, adaptive daughter Nightwing as the Black Bishop, and Gotham's resident religious based crime fighter Azrael as the Black Knight. Bruce also knew that the powers of Metamorpher would make him ideal for stealth missions, so he also brought him in as the Black Bishop.
At first, Bruce was simply going to take the White King role, step back, and let his Black Piece Task Force take care of all the dirty work. But he couldn't. The responsibility of facing a challenge head on is simply too much to avoid. So Bruce needed an identity.
Outside of the White and Black families, no onw knows that Bruce Wayne has a duel identity. By day, Bruce is the White King, gathering intel and leading the metahuman businesses of the DCU, directing teams such as the Justice League, Justice Society, WildCATs, Gen13, Infinity Impact, Batman INC, and Young Justice in day to day operations. But by night, Bruce Wayne gets his hands a little dirty. Donning a familiar black cowl, Bruce Wayne becomes the Black King, cleaning up the world's metahuman organized crime rackets, and stll trying to fulfill that oath her made to his parents so long ago.
For the first time in a long time, CHECKMATE is a force for good.
But how long can that possibly continue...?

I really like your ideas and concepts. I doubt DC comics would ever have Bruce permanently give up Batman or Diana permanently give up Wonder Woman. Which is what I love about your reboot. There's surprises around every corner.

What can I say, I just love this concept! I think it's awesome! (Reminds me a lot of marvel.wikia.com/Bruce_Wayne:_…
)
That said, I think the execution could have been better.
First, your idea is just too different from how the original Checkmate worked in the comics. There was always only one King and one Queen (the two are always of the opposite color, if the King is White then the Queen is Black and vice versa) (after Infinite Crisis they changed it so that there were two Kings, one with superpowers the second without, and two Queens, again one with superpowers and the second without, the superpowered King was paired with the non-superpowered Queen and vice versa; I never liked this revision). Also, Black and White doesn't separate costumed/anonymous members from non-masked members, it indicates their specialty: Operations (Black) or Intelligence (White).
Black operatives are those who deal with missions that require brute strength and firepower, in other words: the dirty work. Their missions usually involve things like "capture this target" or "rescue this hostage". They're the "muscle" of Checkmate (I put quotes because there are also Black members who are hackers and supervisors). White operatives deal with the spy stuff, undercover missions and so on. the Black and White teams don't interact with each other with the exception of the King and the Queen (separately they overlook their own team, and together they supervise the whole organization). (I realize you got their roles right, but you still put only capes on the Black team and all the public faces on the White team regardless of their abilities and character. Selina is much better suited for spy stuff than for combat, for example, so she'd be better off working on the White team.)
Staying faithful to this hierarchy, Bruce would be the White King and Diana would be the Black Queen. (Can you imagine Diana on an undercover mission? LOL! Being on the White team just doesn't agree with her character, she's a warrior first and foremost.)
Second, your lineup consists almost entirely of members of the Bat-Clan. I don't exactly have a problem with it, but who is helping Batman back in Gotham?
Putting Alfred and Lucius on the team just doesn't make sense in my opinion. 1) They already have their own roles as the caretaker/butler of Wayne Manor and the supervisor of Wayne Enterprises respectively. 2) If Bruce is like 40 years old, then how old are Alfred and Lucius? It would be too irresponsible of Bruce to put them on a new team when they are so close to retirement and the last thing Bruce would want is to put either of them in danger by putting them in this position (spy stuff and special ops is a very dangerous career, even for those who only deal in logistics).
Selina and Azrael (btw, which version of Azrael would that be, Jean-Paul Valley or Michael Lane?) are awesome characters, but I don't think that working for the government (even if their boss is Bruce) suits them. Selina is simply too wild and independent, she can't help it, this job will make her feel imprisoned. Azrael is just too unstable (because of his cursed armor). While working under Bruce could help keep him in check, even Bruce has been unable to control Azrael at times.
Amanda Waller, Cassandra and Metamorpho however are very good choices. Metamorpho was once part of the Outsiders and is used to working under the original Batman. Cass is probably the most loyal person to Bruce in the whole world. She almost worships him and would follow him no matter what. Waller would be the most antagonistic towards Bruce and could serve to add an element of tension to the team.
Putting Bruce and Diana in charge of this rebooted Checkmate is an awesome idea in my opinion. Throughout her different incarnations, Diana has a long and rich history of working with the government, while Bruce seems like he was born to fill this role. Besides, Bruce and Diana have been working side-by-side for so long they must have a very solid bond, which is essential when leading an operation like this.
And third, Bruce filling in the role of both White and Black King seems really superfluous. I mean, his secret identity just seems too easy to figure out. And since the Black King's role is that of a leader (giving orders) and not a field agent, Bruce can do the exact same job as the White King. If Bruce really feels the need to do some field work, he would rather pose as a Black Knight (maybe recycle his Insider cover), which would also give him the possibility of spying on the Black team if need be.
Well, that's my personal opinion. I hope I didn't sound too much like a jerk or anything.

Everything you bring up can simply be answered with one specific idea: this is Bruce Wayne's plan.
Everything designed for Checkmate comes directly from Bruce, so everyone he fills the roles with are going to be people he trusts. Lucious and Alfred, sure, I guess considering the ages, they would be close to retiring, but he wouldn't have them on the team unless he knew they could do the job. He isn't a man who trusts too often, so who else would he fill the roles with besides his two surrogate fathers?
Azrael is John Paul Valley. Simple as that.
Gotham is still heavily protected. Wait until you get to my Batman Inc idea...

- "Gotham is still heavily protected. Wait until you get to my Batman Inc idea..."
That's not my issue here. I know that Gotham is in good hands with Dick, while your Batman Inc don't really spend much time in Gotham. My question is: who is helping Batman(Dick Grayson) with Wayne Enterprises and who takes care of Wayne Manor if Lucius and Alfred are busy with Checkmate?
Wayne Enterprises (and the Wayne Foundation) has always been a vital part of Bruce's mission, not only because it allows him to finance his nighttime activities (and the Justice League among other projects), but also because as Batman he only treats the symptoms of this plague called criminality (catching the bad guys doesn't stop new bad guys from popping up). As Bruce Wayne, he can deal with the causes of criminality: poverty, unemployment, bad education, homelessness, corruption and so on. (The only exception are the criminally insane and the psychopaths, who make it impossible for Bruce to give up his crime-fighting career.) However, because of his nighttime activities (and his involvement with the Justice League), Bruce is unable to dedicate enough time to his company, so he needs someone working full-time who can keep tabs for him, keep him updated on the situation and generally take care of the business while he is away. That's where Lucius comes in.
Without Alfred (or at least someone to fill in his shoes), Bruce wouldn't have anyone to take care of the Manor. It's not a responsibility Bruce can just trust anyone with, considering all the secrets he is trying to hide from the rest of the world. Bruce also relies heavily on Alfred to organize his (fake) social life. And last but not least, Alfred is the one who takes care of Batman's regular wounds. In other words, Alfred is the one who protects Batman while he is busy protecting Gotham. I doubt it would be any different if Dick were to take over.
Who else can Bruce trust to fill in these roles?
As for who can Bruce trust to be part of Checkmate (other than those you've already included), there's actually quite a lot of candidates. Staying close to home (Bat-Clan members and others from Batman's supporting cast), there are three perfect candidates: Huntress (though she is already part of the Birds of Prey) and Sasha Bordeaux (Bruce Wayne's former bodyguard), both of whom have been members of Checkmate, and Lucas Fox, Lucius' son (he was called Lucius Jr before the new52). If Bruce has enough trust in Metamorpho, then he could have included other (former) Outsiders, like Black Lightning, Katana or even Starfire (yeah, I know, she's a New God now ; btw, does she still have an history/relationship with Dick in your reboot?). Besides Diana, there are other heroes that Bruce can trust with this project: unless the events depicted in Identity Crisis (the mind-wipes) are still part of your reboot, Green Arrow and Zatanna (though they already have their own team); I haven't seen Jason Blood/Etrigan in any of your reboot ideas (did I miss him?), depending on the continuity he is a longtime friend of the Wayne family; other heroes who have been Checkmate members, like Vixen, Mr Terrific or Fire. Finally, you could have included people from Diana's supporting cast, like Artemis, Nemesis, Steve Trevor and Etta Candy.

Another cool idea. If they can get away with Batman Inc., this would work waaay better.

I honestly thought this was what Batman Inc was going to be. Instead, it's just sorta a Bat-Family book. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but it could have been so much more.
