Description this is steven.

he is homeless.

he has the kindest most radiant soul you can imagine.

he loves seattle, LA and chicago.
he dislikes san diego.

he reads anne rice, adores michelangelo and
likes to visit museums.
(he had me at michelangelo).

he says most everyone is nice to him
and only about 1 in 100 people
are assholes.

that's not too shoddy.

stories.

sit down with someone like steve
and swap stories.

it will change who you are.

* the white outline around his head is
not due to treatment. it's just the way
the gameworks awning looks framed
around his head.
or maybe he's an angel..? hahaa..

FULL-VIEW, for me.

well, last i heard he had decided to stay here is seattle instead of going back to chicago
and he had applied for some housing help. i was with my brother so i didn't want to
pry too much but i'm going to go back downtown soon and i'll ask him further
what's up with him. i still don't really know his story. i just assumed he was
a nomadic type but never really asked just why he was homeless.
his eyes are so clear that i (again) assumed that he's drug and alcohol-free
but i have no idea really. i just want to sit down with him over some lunch
and find out more about him. if that happens i'll include an update here for sure.
thanks sweety for your nice comment.

I did something much like this one day.

Actually twice.

It's a very nice thing to do every once and a while.
I'd never met either of them.

I was at Shaker Square poking around with my camera a while back and I stopped at Papa John's pizza and bought myself a cheese one. I sat down and started eating it and noticed a peculiar man sitting at the table beside me. I looked up at him after he crushed a can with his foot and then started talking to him. He told me all about his job as a mail man and I tried to explain him some things about myself.

Then I was at Coventry sitting in the park when I started taking to this guy named Joey. He was really interesting and we talked for an hour or so. I explained to him things about cameras and photography and he told me about his love for reading. He had me listen to his music and it was nice to hear something different.

I never talked to either of them again... I doubt I'll see the mailman again but there's a chance I'll see Joey if I go back to the park. I got a picture of Joey though sadly it didn't turn out exactly the way I wanted to. I didn't meter it right and I guess instead of getting the shadows, the center weighted thing was overpowered by the highlights in the background so his face was dark. I don't know if I'll put it on dA. I might get criticized for underexposing it.

Well anyway, I was just sharing some stories of mine... if you read them, thanks.

I really enjoyed yours.

Thank you so much for providing the background to the picture. It adds so much to it. He seems so very kind and sweet... by his eyes and smile. Even though he has a bit of a smile... his eyes still look sad... for some reason it makes me want to cry. It looks like he still has hope and a purpose. I'll admit that I'm afraid of most people I run into on the street in my town... I was waiting for the bus in my downtown (btw my city has 3 buses that loop around and a population of about 35 thousand) and this one guy started talking to me (I was with a few people but he was looking at me mostly)... I was drawn by his stories... his life. I was still pretty scared of him (this was sorta increased when I noticed he wasn't always looking at my face... *ahem*) but I'm drawn to knowing a piece of someone else's life. I've lived a sheltered life... so meeting and talking to someone like Steven would be something I'd want to do. People... oh! That's another reason why I like so much of your photography... they're people... you captured a moment in someone's life. Side thought... they say that when your picture is taken, it steals your soul. Well, pictures like yours is proof that a bit of their soul is instilled in the photograph. Oy, when you get me talking and commenting I can't stop...sorry!

I had to come back and look at this piece again - just because I like it so much. The second time around the thing that struck me the most is how honest his face is - I think that is a rarity in portraits that I see now, and because of that this photograph really stands out.

This picture is absolutely fabulous!!!!

I mean, I love looking into peoples faces and read them and I love to talk to homeless people!
They know the life from a different angle and some of them can really teach you lessons in life

and the ones who aren't drunken all the time also are so down to earth, just great people... (well most of them)

what i want to say is: It seems to me that you two really enjoyed talking to each other! He is like really paying attention to you, and he kind of "invites" you into his world! Ah I don't know if you know what I mean, but I just want to say that this shot can change people in the way they see homeless people.
Because one look into his eyes, and you respect him for what he is!

GREAT, GREATER, GREATEST, THIS SHOT

wonderful portrait, although I think without the overexposed back it would be better. I mean not overexposed but bright, but with still visible structures. A little bit of dodging and burning in his face could have made it much more impressive. Too bad you did not take it on b/w film.
Great that you found him and gave him a print would be great if there would be more people like yoi on this planet.

what a great comment - i simply love constructive
criticism even more than praise..! hahaa..

i would love to see how you would dodge/burn
the face to make it more impressive..
if you have the time to give it a whirl
that would be great.

hmm.. the background too, uh?
you think it should be darker
but leaving all elements visible?
you might have something there..
i like how the bright almost forces
your eyes in back to his face. but
perhaps darker would be better.. more subtle..

thanks so much for stopping by.
and you're not so bad
yourself, y'know.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bzed In reply to iamkatia [2005-05-19 23:54:37 +0000 UTC]

imho it's just not good for a b/w photo if there're areas where things are not visible anymore because of too high contrast or just because they're overexposed. bright is ok, but burned away goes into the wrong direction. That's for example the reason why things like the zone-system were inventend - to make sure neither the bright areas are overexposed nor the dark ones are underexposed.
and to the face: i would darken the very bright areas a bit, there's a reflection of sunlight or a flash in there, and i would lighten up the left, darker eye a bit. to change it radically (would only be possible with a not-overexposed background) you could make the background much more dark, could be interesting, too. although I don;t know it that would work, it;'s just an idea. And the reason why I think you need a film cam

this photo is wonderful, and the story to go with it only adds to it!
i hate when people aren't nice to the homeless. i mean, the fact that they are homeless doesn't mean give them special personal attention, but people take that to mean that they aren't human, that they don't fuction how people with homes do.

i met a hoemless man who just wanted to buy a sandwich, so i took him to lunch. neither of us could've been happier! i met a wonderful person, and he got something wanted too. people like you that can realize homeless are less of people are beautiful.

i love this lighting in the photo, it's almost surreal. when i saw it as a thumbnail i thought that it was a well done drawing. simply gorgeous
