Description
this is steven.he is homeless.
he has the kindest most radiant soul you can imagine.
he loves seattle, LA and chicago.
he dislikes san diego.
he reads anne rice, adores michelangelo and
likes to visit museums.
(he had me at michelangelo).
he says most everyone is nice to him
and only about 1 in 100 people
are assholes.
that's not too shoddy.
stories.
sit down with someone like steve
and swap stories.
it will change who you are.
* the white outline around his head is
not due to treatment. it's just the way
the gameworks awning looks framed
around his head.
or maybe he's an angel..? hahaa..
FULL-VIEW, for me.

There is a light in his eyes that makes you want to cry... either in sorrow or in joy. Perhaps it doesn't matter at all.
This is priceless. Though I haven't been here on dA for long, this is easily one of the best portraits I've seen to date. Thank you for sharing it with us.

thanks so much for your wonderful comment.
i know exactly what you mean by
'there is a light in his eyes'.
that's what stopped me in my tracks
when i first saw him. how he emanates Light.

I'm glad to see photographers reaching out to the people, really maximizing the use of imagery. Your street photos are certainly praiseworthy and I'm so relieved to find such powerful and meaningful photos. Personally, I find that these type of documentary/journalistic genres are the most important mediums of socio-cultural history and consequently are among the most powerful conduits to the timeless proliferation of information. When our children's children search for a retrospective view of what was our world, histories and images like these will prevail in honestly and accurately portraying the important things, the people and the events.
On a technical note, the midtones are outstanding especially on the face and the eyes do help verify the story. There is some lost details in the brights, but thats irrelevant really. Agency VII or Magnum would be proud. I know I am.
Thanks for sharing. Regards,
Justin

wow, this photo is just amazing.. I've seen some of the homeless around downtown where I live, and sometimes if they're holding up a sign for money/food, I give them a spare granola bar I have or something, and maybe a brief smile before going away, because they look scary. But this man you've captured in a photo, he actually looks quite friendly, and even approachable, not like some homeless I've seen who look like druggies or just plain scary.
I'm glad you got the chance to stop and talk with him, and take this photo. It forces people to put away the stereotypical homeless person in their mind and stop to consider that they are real people as well, who have interests and likes and dislikes, just the same as people with homes.

I did a project in psychology on "Homelessness" and at the end I showed a series of pictures from homeless individuals. This would've fit in perfectly.
Anyway, I love this photo and the story behind it. Very touching.

I love this photo...he is a beautiful person, inside and out, and you've really captured it so well. I can't help but look at it and smile, but looking back at his misfortunes, I'm also sad. There are probably many people out there like Steven that are just down on their luck, waiting for their chance. But he makes the most of it, and that makes me happy. If I ever need an uplift I can look back at this.
I'm inspired.

he has really beautiful eyes.
homeless people have their own mysteriousness.
i've heard "statistics" that a majority of homeless people are mentally ill...i never looked up the stats myself so i can't say it's true.
like you said, he was very intelligent. some just want to travel and explore.
sometimes i think that some of them are homeless for a reason, that they are sick of materialism in the world, especially the western world.
when i read the book American Psycho, it tainted my view of homeless people. made them seem undeserving of sympathy. i started to despise homeless people. part of it was also going to sri lanka and seeing the homeless people there. i couldn't understand how people could be homeless here. in SL, jobs are very scarce. here, even fastfood restaurants and grocery stores will hire almost anyone. but i was missing the point. i had this mindset that it was their fault that they were homeless in america.
i don't know which people are mentally ill, which ones aren't. which ones are taking advantage and which ones are legit.
now, when i think of homeless people, i have yet another problem with the U.S. gov't. in my opinion, i believe that it is their responsibility to shelter, feed, and raise the living standard for homeless people in america. it's there responsibility to find out who is mentally ill; who is sick, and treat them and help them.

well, it's all of our responsibilty, dear. not just the government.
best not to wait for them. let's all do what we can. one by one.

i think i might feel embarrassed if i told him someone thought he was hot.
you might have to come here and do that yourself.

I think he knows more about life than a lot of us. I guess his situation is the price to pay for being pure and at peace, self aware and alive. Someone should just grab him up to do a great ad campaign. Nobody would guess. Except he sounds so perfect the way he is, would be a shame to change it.
