Description
The absolute most basic guide for writing fictionThe above tutorial is the most base-line set-up for practically every story in existence. It's the oldest plot line ever: A wants B, C tries to stop A from getting B. So if it's been around for thousands of years, it obviously works, and if done right, it works very well.
I will upload more tutorials if you guys like this!

This is really good advice ichiko. Would you recommend listening to music while writing, because I do that when I write pieces of my novel (started about 5 months ago?).

It helps me a lot but it's all a matter of personal preference. I'd recommend listening to music that fits the particular scene you're writing for to help you get in the mood.

Are you into technical drawing at all?
This kind of reminds me of the flow chart I have to make to understand my work. Itβs similar to a brain storing chart or spider diagram.

*feels proud that she's following most of the advice*
Although I've never heard of the corner-goals exercise, I'll make a note to use it next time I write a story- it seems a lot more structured and sensible than my current method of simply slamming two characters together in a situation and watching them.

Wow. I read a lot of "How to write fiction" crap all the time, and at a certain point it all gets very repetitive. But this is very interesting and new (to me, at least). I'm impressed, and anxious to try this method.

Heh, I always try to think about the motivation and decisions my characters made prior to the story I want to lay out, but I've never heard of the corner-goal-conflict stuff.
So yeah... Thanks for the tutorial, that stuff is really helpful!

Yaaaaaay~
Although I'd be careful about the "wanna write a best-seller" thing, considering you actually haven't published a best-seller yet, and therefore don't have authority in that area... yet. ;D
HOWEVER, I COULD BE COMPLETELY WRONG, because I don't know everything. Or if you've ever published any works or anything. So yeah, feel free to correct me.
This is a fantastic guide, though, and I recommend it to ANYONE who wants to improve their writing. C:

"I iz conflict RAWR!"
I lol'd.
I wish more people could not only see this, but internalize it. Just because your character got from point A to point B doesn't mean ground was covered in regards to goals and ambitions. There's got to be something from the get-go that the character needs or wants. It can't be just like
"ARR I AM ACTION MAN I KILLZ ALL THE BAD PEPOLES ADN SAVE TEH DAY!!111one"
So many art tutorials on DA; nice to see a writing one. Lord knows DA needs it. Just because you can pick up a pencil/use a word processor, it doesn't mean you're a writer.

And even if you're an awesome writer like me *is hit with a brick* You can always be improved!

PyroJames421 In reply to IchikoWindGryphon [2011-03-11 21:08:58 +0000 UTC]
Pssh, silly goose. You know claiming to be an awesome writer has no weight on DA. Everyone thinks they're an awesome writer.
The best is when people ask for criticism, then bitch when they actually get it properly, instead of "cool story bro."

Well, this is helpful, if you want to begin to write...
Even so I've got another tip: write write write...
If you write everything will fall into place... I've begun with writing about three years ago and continued with this story up to now... When I read the first pages it makes me shiver of how bad it was... But the last pages (94; 95; 96) are well done and sometimes I really get trapped by my own story
That's the problem I've got today when I'm writing... I get trapped an can't stop writing, because it's just exiting...
But very good tutorials... A must-read for all beginners

I have the feeling this came along because of the last thing.
But I can see the point in this. I personally pride myself in something similar to what you say in this. A good 90% of what I make for a story will never be used. Some might say that is a waste, but because of that, I can have subtle references in the background, dispositions of people in a certain time, and even what a place looks like. In my last story, I had a metal time line of what happened not only directly in the story, but everywhere in the story world. Sure no one will see the time line, but I can see it and show subtle bits of it in the story, giving it a ton of layers to look at.

Hehe you won't believe the amount of notes I have made on these four chars. Had to write whole new stories becuase two major wars would be referanced. And the history of each school of magic. You are right, taking the time to write all this down gives the chars a lot of depth.
