There's good reason to be scared of insects if you don't know a lot about them. There are a lot of harmless ones (including some of the scary-looking ones), but there are plenty of biting and stinging ones out there too! I once thought that the most damage a beetle could do was pinch you, but I've since learned that some species secrete a defensive fluid that causes blisters! There are even some caterpillars that can potentially send your body into shock just by brushing against them. If you can stand looking at the pictures, I definitely recommend reading up on the insects in your area so that you'll know what can, can't, and probably won't hurt you.
Also, Bug PokΓ©mon don't tend to have that freaky alien look that most real-world insects have, so that may be another reason.

Rosy maple moths are the cutest things! I hope we get an official rosy maple moth PokΓ©mon someday.

Love these just recommend changing aromoths's shiny. Inverted colors are just over used in my opinion. Keep up the great work

Glad you like 'em.
It may be overdone, but I really don't feel like any other color scheme suits Shiny Aromoth. I've tried several color combinations, including swapping the pink with blue (which I usually enjoy seeing in Shinies), but nothing looked quite right. I think the only thing that would might other than flipping the colors would be to make the colors slightly lighter or slightly off-hue (like making the pink more of a lavender color and the yellow a goldenrod), but I generally find Shinies like that boring. I think the flipped colors are more-striking than such slight adjustments and still make it feel like a rosy maple moth.

How in the world did you make these? They look identical to the Ken Sugimori art style!Β

icycatelf In reply to CrystalSpoink [2017-05-10 23:17:29 +0000 UTC]
That means so much to me! I've tried emulating Sugimori's oldschool style several times over the years, but I definitely think these are my closest attempts so far. I wouldn't call it perfect quite yet, but I am REALLY happy with how they turned out.
First off, I tried to keep the designs really simple. Second, while tracing my sketches (in Adobe Illustrator), I only used two stroke weights (with rounded joints): 2pt for the major shapes and 1.25 pt for smaller details like eyes and spots (these sizes would vary depending on the original size of the art). The next bit is where it gets tricky, but I'll try to explain it the best I can (I'm sure there are better tutorials out there, though):
- Draw a box around the art, then export the image at 300 DPI in PNG format with a white background.
- Open the image in Photoshop and trim away the box lines, but leave plenty of a white space around the drawing.
- Go to Filters - Filter Gallery - Distort - Ocean Ripple (Size 1, Magnitude 1).
- Go to Image - Adjustments - Levels, dragging the black slider to 129 and the white slider to 131 to "harden" the stroke edges. Open again and drag the white slider all the way to the left to get rid of any grey pixels.
- Duplicate the layer. On the new layer, fill the negative area around the art with 50% grey. Use the Magic Wand Tool (with anti-aliasing turned off) to select the white bits and cut them.
- Return to the bottom layer and fill it with the colors of your choice. I personally like sampling colors from Gen. 5 sprites.
- Create a new layer above the bottom layer and make a blotchy paper-like texture using whatever method you prefer (I just used a hodgepodge of filters until I got one I liked, including noise, blurs, and various Filter Gallery effects). Change the Blending Mode to Overlay and adjust the opacity until it looks nice against the colors.
- Above that, create a white layer at 25% opacity.
- Pull-up some old-school Sugimori arts with similar shapes to your designs for shading reference.
- Create new layers as you add a new highlight or shadow. For highlights, use a white 60px hard round brush. For shadows, use black. Decrease the opacity of all the Shadow layers to 25%.
- Blur all of the highlights and shadows except "hard" highlights on the eyes or other shiny bits using Filters - Blur - Gaussian Blur (15).
- With the Eraser Tool set at the same brush size as the highlight/shadow and 15% opacity, erase along the edge of each highlight shadow (the width of the erased bit should be close to your brush size). Erase again, but midway through the last erase with 20% opacity. (Hopefully that makes sense.) Try to erase in a lacy motion to give the effect of watercolor feathering.
- Duplicate your bottom colored layer, and drag it just below the blotchy paper layer. Change the Blending Mode to Color and Opacity to 50% or 100% (whichever looks best).
- If you haven't already, save your progress!
- Select all, then Copy Merged.
- Open GIMP and paste the image into GIMP.
- Go to Layer - Transparency - Remove Alpha Channel.
- Go to Filters - Artisic - Oilify (use the lowest setting possible that doesn't leave any white bits, usually 5 or 6)
- Sample the background color with the Color Picker Tool. Click the swatch and copy the hexadecimal code.
- Click the background with the Fuzzy Select Tool, then go to Select - Grow (4).
- Go to Layer - Transparency - Color to Alpha. Click the swatch and paste the copies hexadecimal code.
- Export the file in PNG format, then open in Photoshop. If the stroke is partially transparent (which happens sometimes for whatever reason), duplicate the image about 4 times and merge the layers.
- Go to Image - Image Size. Change the size to 50% with Nearest Neighbor mode.
- Go to Image - Trim to trim away the negative space.
- Save

Thank you! I'll have to try this out.
I've recently been trying to replicate the Sugimori style in watercolors. It's quite fun, but really challenging.

I still want to play around with traditional watercolors...!
Also, I should note that I only made my drawings about 4 inches tall in Illustrator. If you make them much larger, you'll have to use larger stroke/brush sizes.

Glad you like it! I didn't realize until after the fact, but it sort of resembles the Stray Fairies from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Which works since it's part Fairy-Type.

I had thought about doing two heads on it, but you might imagine why I scrapped that idea. It might look a little similar to Clamperl and Cosmoem, but I'm pleased with how the simplicity works for it.

Yasss, let's make this line real!! (Not gonna happen, but it'd be great to get an official rosy maple moth line in the future. It would definitely go on my main team.)

Yeah, I sort of borrowed the thorns from Chikorita. Its main color being green certainly doesn't make it any less obvious.
