Description WAIT GUYS HOW DO YOU ADD THAT NICE CUSTOM THUMBNAIL PIC??

Whew finally finished.

Well this is the tutorial that I said I'll do all the way back in January. It covers basically how I color the face and hair.

Well I put a lot of work and thought into this, and hopefully those who asked will find it useful. If you are a beginner, you might want to read this as well:[link]

It's the tutorial that I first learned how to CG from .

For those of you read it, I'm curious as to what you think so please leave a comment if its not too much trouble.

I feel that I haven't explained some of the steps very clearly so if you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them here.

I've already got a nice foundation for CGing (though I'm not really good at it yet), so this tutorial was pretty good. I got a bit confused with the colors. I'm not quite sure I fully understood you there.
For your first tutorial, you did well.
Heck, I even learned what the lock thingy did in PS (yea...I don't know 1/2 the stuff I can do with PS yet...I learn as I go....). I'll definetly use that this time when I color my picture!
Also, the extra links are nice. but [link] doesn't work.

you are amazing. i've seen a whole bunch of other tutorials up on deviantart but they just gloss over a whole bunch of sections like blending. for beginners like me blending has always been a complete mystery. i've tried a million different ways myself but none of them ended up like the painterly effects all my favorite artists have.

about the brush part in your tutorial. when you said it would be better to drag the slider to firm, but would be better as painter, did you mean it would be better to use the painter program or something? my lines always end up so raggedy no matter how steady my hand is or how fluid i try to make it, hopefully this will work.

i was also curious if you know of any particular reference books that you use for coloring with photoshop?

later

Well, I guess my only problem are the eyes. I draw them too big.
THNX A LOT FOR THE TUTORIAL.

wahhh so very helpfull.. especialy the blenind.. I always mess around for hours and it still doesn't look how I want it.. I'm jumping to try for myself
I don't know if anyone else has said it but..

To have a nice custom thumbnail pic, as you call it you have to when you submit it, or edit it, select the pic you want.. lets say a half finsihed Neji, instead of the orginal tutorial.. that way you'll have that pic as thumbnail and when you click it the real tutorial should open..

I'm off now to finish some sketches and try all new things I've read!!

You're tutorial is really great... I have some questions though:
1. How did you put your base colors on your pic? Did you color over your rendered sketch or you created a new layer?
2. What the substitute for the "blend tool" in Photoshop?
3. On your STEP 4, instead of using a soft-round brush to blend the colors, can you select (feathered) the part to blend and use gaussian blur (w/ desired radius value)?
4. Oh well... it's really confusing. Let's warp to the last part of your tut. On the last pic (Neji), How did his skin got smooth like that? Still using blend, soft-round brush, and/or liquify?

iDNAR In reply to JMOA [2005-09-01 06:01:33 +0000 UTC]

1. If I have a lineart over it, I use one solid base color on a layer under it. If I use a sketch I just paint over it with 3 base colors, approximatingly matching the value under it.

2. Shoot did I really say there was a "blend tool" in photoshop? There are no blend tools.

3. You don't have to select if you locked the layer's transparency, I but I wouldn't recommend blur to do anything other than blurring. You lose detail, and I forgot to include a sharp points in shading section(more to do this weekend).

4. Sorry, if you think it's really confusing. Yes, the soft-round brush tool, actually I used painter 8's detail blender tool as well but it's perfectly possible to do it with the brush tool (I've done it lots of times), its just faster. I don't use liquify to blend anything, only to modify misaligned/ugly features, anatomy problems, etc. Not recommended if you lineart.

Hope that helps.

LOL you're Omega-Knight! Its not like you really need the tutorial all that much. Maybe the light source section might help. Love your comic, hilariousness. But I must say, with all those comments, yet0 favs makes you a seem a very...interesting person .
