This is definitely a more creative and apt depiction of the character/s than simply splitting the image or showing them side by side, I'll give you that.

Just like his own shadow, Jekyll can't ever truly be free of Hyde.

I also like how you changed the color of the formula in the shadow. Many people mistakenly believe that the transformation is temporary, when it actually requires a dose of formula to switch between personalities.

Nice catch with the formula colors! I think I drew this right after reading the original story. Its themes of good and evil and the temptation to indulge the evil in order to "relieve" the good are really interesting concepts to me. Hyde is part of Jekyll, part of himself Jekyll usually ignored or was ignorant of. But when he was split, it started out feeling like freedom, but then Jekyll was enslaved to the rages of his evil self, while frustratingly still retaining faults in his "good" self.
Just my interpretation, but some of the thoughts that went into the piece.
Thanks for your intelligent commentary!

Not only that, but it's more than simply a man succumbing to his "evil" nature. Nobody becomes evil just so they can be a violent asshole. The love interest who is smitten by Hyde is like, the ultimate temptation for Jekyll, his ultimate reason for continuing to imbibe the potion. By allowing Hyde to take control, Jekyll is able to feel those raw, passionate thoughts that all his life, he's been taught were wrong. But how can something that FEELS so right, be wrong? It's more about JUSTIFYING evil than "submitting" to it. About finding ways to take what you can't have.

Even more than that, it's like a battle of wits between two inverted entities inhabiting the same body. In a way, Hyde is a tragic character. It's not HIS fault he's so violent and impulsive. He was literally created as the moral inversion of a good man. And now that he's become self aware, he only wishes to be allowed to live his life, as any free man wants. He's just as much a prisoner as Jekyll is, not only to the formula, but of his uncontrollable urges. Even though he KNOWS that what he does is wrong, he simply can't control himself. (Which makes Hyde and Jekyll not so different after all) And it's no wonder that he despises Jekyll, who wishes to make Hyde disappear forever. A goal that is tantamount to MURDER, but on a psychological level.

I guess that's what Hyde really wanted all along... to have some control over his own life, to truly be allowed to be HIMSELF, and not just the garbage of another man's soul.

It really is a story that's so much more than pop culture depicts it as. And I think it's this oversimplified version that's kept people from actually seeking out and UNDERSTANDING the story.

These are all really interesting points, but I'm not fully tracking with you. There is no love interest in the short story, and Hyde doesn't have much of an arc because it's an epistolary, comprised of letters, and none of them from Hyde's POV. In the book, Hyde is very much the monster, who will only escalate in violence unless he's stopped.
Like in Frankenstein, Jekyll is accountable for Hyde's behavior, not just because he created him, but because he abandoned/misused him.
I'm assuming you're taking your points from the stage version, which also diverges a lot from the source material. I mean, it's nearly impossible to adapt an epistolary 100% faithfully.
I'd like to see it though.Β

Hmm. Strange. It HAS been a long time, maybe I just mixed the two versions in my head........ my bad.Β  =n=;

Either way, it's a nice picture.

Design for the characters? It's in the description. For the overall design of the piece? A lot of places, including a Batman and Robin cover I think.
