Description From left to right:  Tilikum, Kachina, Kalina.

So, lately I have been tagging my cetacean stuff with #procaptivity .  Why?  Because I'd searched for that before and found nothing but SeaWorld photos taken by an anti-cap!  How ironic.

So, what I was you guys to do is to start tagging your SeaWorld photos, literature, posters, etc. with #procaptivity .

Include the tag in SeaWorld journals, comments, anything!  Just make sure it's pro-cap.  (:

So, #procaptivity !  We love whales!

Don't forget to use this for all good zoos as well!

If you can't leave a mature, well-educated comment, don't comment at all.

I love my shamu plush. I got it at SeaWorld in May of 2015. I have so many stuffed animals, and I love them all!   A lot of them are dolphins. When I went to Discovery Cove on my last day in Orlando, I got to pet Lester and have Cindy pull me through the water. They are adorable dolphins, and they are both up there in age.

That's great.  SeaWorld plushies are the most high-quality plushes I've ever had, besides a company called Douglas.  They look amazing, they're soft and cuddly, and they've held up like nothing I've ever seen!  I've had my plush Kalina (on the far right) since 2009.  For years I took her outside with me, and I've snuggled with her, slept with her, and took her on every trip since I got her (I'm silly, I know).  Still in pretty great condition, as opposed to other companies I've had who have their fur get ratty, fall out, or get holes after a few years.

Thanks, I think so too!  I really like taking pictures of them.  Now that my zoo season is done, I'll probably be taking more pictures of them, since my steady supply of animal photo opportunities has been cut off.

I got a beluga whale plush when I went. I named him Berg, like an iceberg They are very soft. I have some Douglas plushies. I also have these Wild Republic plushies that hold up very well and are incredibly soft.

What happened to your supply of animal photos? I wish I had a steady supply of opportunities like my falconry or zoo employee friends have.

That's cute!  Yep SW and Douglas are my faves.  I have a love-hate relationship with Wild Republic.  A lot of them seem to have weird strings, and a phoenix plush that I got at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter - which seems VERY Wild Republic-ish - has a hole in his foot.  Noticed him right after we left.  But they are adorable, I have a WR fennec fox and it's the softest, cutest thing ever.  I like the sturdier plushes like Douglas and Aurora a bit better, though.

I also like it when plushies you get at cool places have special tags.  Like SW, WWoHP, etc.  Makes them the perfect souvenir.

My zoo season is over, so I just have less access to animals.  :/
It certainly is very nice.  I have a lot of pictures that I should upload.

Very refreshing to see another pro cap amongst the many anti caps..The Blackfish activists are some of the rudest people i have ever dealt with, and the fact that they care absolutely nothing about the whales they are trying to rescue royally aggravates me. Blackfish was nothing but pure anti cap propaganda and if they had their way all of our animals would be doomed. People don't realize that our Zoos and Aquariums are responsible for saving our animals, they have literally brought animals back from the brink of extinction by educating people and getting donations for various conservation projects. SeaWorld does all of this and more, not only do they educate their guests with their shows, animal ambassadors, ect, but they also donate millions of dollars to research and conservation as well as rescue and rehabilitation. I only wish people would actually research things instead of getting all of their information from a false, one sided documentary. Me and my friends on twitter have been fighting these people every day with #StandWithSeaWorld and trying to reverse the damage but these activist are vicious and have numbers on their side.

Hahaha your welcome I love you too XD
Yeah I sent out about 100 tweets or so telling people to watch the new SeaWorld documentary Blackfish didn't want them to see lol (i left a link to SeaWorld 50 years of caring), and i schooled some people who left nasty replies. I considered the tweetstorm a huge success because no one wants to stand up to these people. But i do, because unlike everyone else i can see who they really are and what they really stand for. Im sure they are rallying together as we speak to get another tweetstorm ready but our group of SeaWOrld supporters keeps growing and growing as more people realize how misleading Blackfish is. The Blackfish effect is already starting to die off and with the Blue World Project coming up, they dont stand a chance. Moral of this story, evil never wins.
Anyways if you dont mind im going to go follow you on twitter all of the SeaWorld supporters tend to stick together, it also helps with the relentless bullying...:/

I don't know when the next storm is going to be, but when i find out i will message you. I'm actually a little worried, because we aren't dealing with just regular blackfish extremists anymore. Anonymous has stepped in, they are the ones that were at the Ferguson protests fighting with the KKK, They also managed to hack their twitter account and release all of their personal information to the general public. They have also hacked into government files. These people are ruthless..and i used to follow them because i thought they were good for the most part but they are very devious and that especially became apparent when they started going after SeaWorld. Anyways they haven't done anything too alarming lately so i don't think we need to worry to much but they are a very real issue and they make the other activists look like kittens.

you do know that Tilikum has killed trainers, right?
I'm not saying that there isn't a risk when you're dealing with a huge animal like that, but don't you think that sea world still letting him be in shows after a girl (No not Dawn, there was someone before that) was killed at his previous facility is a tad irresponsible?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Igloo9201 In reply to sarahpenny10 [2014-11-10 23:13:36 +0000 UTC]

Haha.  Anyone who has put about two minutes into researching this topic knows of Tilikum and his deeds.  I have put many hours into this subject, and would prefer to not be spoken to like a toddler.  You could have asked this question much, much more respectfully.

Tilikum being in shows has nothing to do with the deaths.  Keltie Byrne (the SeaLand trainer) slipped into the tank.  Daniel Dukes jumped into the tank because he's....insane/was high.  And Dawn was on the slideout with Tilikum when she was pulled in.
I blame SeaWorld for allowing trainers onto the slideout with Tilikum, for sure; that was highly irresponsible.  But in the current shows, no trainers go in the water with any of the whales, and have NEVER done waterworks with Tilly.  Tilikum's only show segment is the splash segment.  When Tilikum is performing, the trainers are up on the stage, and they now have a metal bar separating themselves from the water.  Having Tilikum perform is probably less dangerous than having to feed him and perform medical procedures.  In his history, Tilikum has an issue only when he is in very, very close proximity with humans.  There is no reliable record of him randomly lunging, biting, mouthing, etc.  So shows hardly even pose a threat.

Plus, we have to keep Tilikum in mind here.  Shows help keep the animal fit and stimulated.  Training is a big part of these animals' lives.  Obviously training Tilly and having him perform his behaviors behind-the-scenes is JUST as dangerous of having him in shows, so by your logic...Tilikum would have no trainer interaction.  He'd become a whale couch potato.  Fat, lazy, under-stimulated--the body needs exercise in many ways.  He would become unhealthy.  Plus, training is necessary to keep the animals mentally stimulated.

In fact, ANY interaction with Tilikum is just as dangerous as shows or training.  So, what...he doesn't get food?  Doesn't get vet exams?  No trainer interaction, no enrichment?  Essentially, the only way for Tilikum to be "safe" is for Tilikum to be dead.  And why anyone would want to euthanize a healthy bull just because he's killed people is beyond me.  SeaWorld just needs to be careful about keeping trainers out of the REAL danger, which is Tilikum's tank and Tilikum's slideout, which they are doing.

I know you're talking about orcas, but saying you are procaptivity sounds like you are simple for anything being captive. So.... yeah it sounds like this would spiral into a debate over politics really. I guess to each his own, but I rather like my freedom and don't want to be captive. My one time spent in the drunk tank is enough for me thanks, I wasn't even drunk when they threw me in there .

So you believe that keeping orcas captive in small concrete pens is a humane and safe thing to do?  Would you be able to elaborate on why you hold this position?

Igloo9201 In reply to WildSpiritWolf [2014-10-20 20:27:36 +0000 UTC]

Indeed I do.

I have been working with, studying, and observing captive exotic animals for nearly my entire life.  I have worked with a large variety of animals, including those which share many things with captive cetaceans.  I have worked with domestic animals that share things with captive cetaceans.  After doing much research, I discovered that captive cetaceans are not much different from any other captive animals.  I have also found that they do, indeed, live well in captivity.

Small concrete pen.

One could use these emotional snares for anything—pets, all zoos, eating meat, etc.

I, for one, prefer stating facts; not statements such as these which make those that disagree with me look like villains.

Tanks for captive cetaceans at credible facilities such as SeaWorld and other AZA-accredited zoological facilities are not as small as many believe.  The animals have access to several tanks at a time, and they are quite large.  But even I will admit, SeaWorld’s current orca tanks could be better.  And they will be!  SeaWorld has plans to completely refurbish their killer whale habitats with the Blue World Project; naturalistic rocky walls, a current, and depths that can be found in the ocean.

blueworldproject.seaworld.com/

But, for now, they could be described as “concrete pens,” as can the tanks of some other captive cetaceans.  This would certainly be a problem if they were left to their own devices with nothing to do all day.  However, they are not.  They spend a large amount of their time interacting with trainers in training sessions, bonding sessions, and husbandry.  They get enrichment items several times a day, so that they have something to do when they aren’t interacting with trainers.  They can also interact with their tank-mates whenever they please.  And who can forget the shows, which provide the animals with mental stimulation and physical exercise.  While the enclosures may seem relatively small and plain, the animals have enough to keep them mentally and physically engaged.  Upon my observations of bottlenose dolphins at the Indianapolis Zoo, I often saw them with toys, I witnessed minimal stereotypical behavior, and I saw the dolphins socially interact almost constantly.  They didn’t show any signs of stress, boredom, or suffering besides their rake marks, which happen frequently both in the wild and captivity.  The animals are healthy.

Humane.

A highly valid concern: I myself once found myself wondering if keeping orcas in captivity is humane.  This is what many wonder.

I have to say, with my research and observation, that yes; captivity can certainly be humane for these animals.

Instead of dissecting all anti-captivity claims here, I will simply explain why I support this.  I have worked with cetaceans and very similar animals before.  While I have never had the opportunity to work with cetaceans for more than a few days at a time; I have worked closely, and often, with captive parrots.  Parrots are incredibly similar to cetaceans in many ways.  They don’t have a natural social structure in captivity, they have a tiny fraction of their natural range in captivity, and they are highly intelligent animals.  And yet none of the parrots that I work with show signs of stress!  They are able to interact with keepers or other birds and receive huge amounts of enrichment each day.  I have also worked with captive wolves, which do not have a natural social structure in captivity (and get into much more fights due to this than occur in nature) and have relatively small space.  And yet they have no signs of stress.  These are just a few of the animals that I could list here.  A huge amount of captive animals have very similar issues and situations as captive cetaceans; if they aren’t insane, stressed, etc…why does everyone think that cetaceans are?  And in my research I have never learned anything which suggests that killer whales, or any cetacean, are somehow dramatically different than other captive animals.  The only difference is longevity, which is improving greatly, and is much less black and white that anti-caps would have you believe.  And longevity is only an issue with orcas, not other cetaceans.  So yes, it is just as humane as any zoo animal as long as they are kept in good conditions.  And there is not a single fiber of my being that could ever believe that high-quality zoos are inhumane, for I have worked with these animals and I know that such a claim is simply not true.

So, I believe that it is humane after research, observation, and heaps of personal experience.

Safe.

The “orcas shouldn’t be in captivity because they are unsafe” argument is deeply flawed and hypocritical.

If you do not support cetacean captivity for that reason, I am guessing that you do not support the following?

Driving Cars

“On average in 2012, 92 people were killed on the roadways of the U.S. each day in 30,800 fatal crashes.”  - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_…

Having Dogs

Averages of 20-30 people a year are killed by domestic dogs, and 4.5-4.7 Americans are bitten by dogs a year.  - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_…

Shopping on Black Friday

Since 2006, this one-day shopping day has caused 7 people to die, and 90 people to be injured.  In contrast, only 4 people have ever been killed by killer whales, with over 100 injuries, after year-round, daily interaction since 1916.

blackfridaydeathcount.com/

Kirby, David. Death at SeaWorld

Working with a predator is dangerous—be it a killer whale, a wolf, or even a domestic dog.  But we who work with such animal know the risks.  But we accept the risks.  And it isn’t anyone’s position to decide for us that working with an orca, a wolf, a bear, etc., is too dangerous.  In fact, working with such animals is a lot safer than driving to work!

So yes.

I do believe that keeping cetaceans in tanks is humane and no less safe than any other occupation.
