Description
Not an astrolabe.Process:
The "Cosmolabe" was made of layered brass sheets:
I did the designs for the markings in Illustrator, printed them out reversed and inverted on a transparency from a laser printer, ironed them onto the brass (with judicious use of a sharpie for clean-up) and acid etched them with the circuit board fluid you can get at Radio Shack. Then I cut out the pieces with a jeweler's saw and filed them smooth. The permanently fixed pieces were riveted together using small brass brads.

That's amazing! Just curious, does the script have any meaning?

Yep, It's primarily for decoration but it does say specific things. The bigger circle on the back says, "Made by Eric Coyote Elliott".

Well done!

You should try it sometime! It only takes a few tools and a bit of desk space. I'd LOVE to see the stuff you'd come up with!

This is an absolutely marvelous device. The runes and marks are lovely and the entire design looks like something they would make for a movie. I love it, wonderful work love.

This is an incredible, wonderful work! Your details are so amazing, and I wonder what it might be use for...whiat are those signs? Are they a real scripture, or did you invent them?

The text is from the Voynich manuscript, an Elizabeathan Grimoir written in this code. Most of the symbols, I came up with myself, to purposely avoid using any historical ones.
This "Cosmolabe" is a prop for a movie. The fifteen circular symbols on the front represent different worlds and the signs on the outer rim are components of magical runes used to travel between the worlds. The instument itself is a way to calculate which runes need to be used for opening gates between specific places.

There are some people who claim to have solved it. The problem is that none of their "solutions" are capable of translating the original text or converting Greek or Latin (The most probable languages it may have been written in) into anything resembling the manuscript's character morphology.
The encoding system I use produces text that is nearly identical with the original manuscript.* It's simple enough to be written quickly and misleading enough to baffle people fairly experienced in ciphers. If I could find letter frequency data for Greek and Latin, I'm fairly sure I could determine whether the original author used a similar scheme or not.

* Yes, the Voynich script on the Cosmolabe is NOT gibberish!

That's how you know if it's a monoalphabetic cipher, right?

The patterns are consistent throughout the manuscript, so I'd bet on it.
