So did you do the calligraphy, as well as the goldleaf? I play around with calligraphy from time to time, but I'm certainly no expert. I have a gigantic goal of copying my friend's entire book onto parchment-styled-art paper and binding it in leather then embossing the front, possibly with gold...eheh o.o I have several pages done, and am excited about the prospect of more. ^^ But this calligraphy looks wonderful! Even and consistent, quite beautiful. =3

Thank you! I love calligraphy and have always intended to do a whole book... someday.

You can definitely tell with the ten or so pages I have so far that my evenness and spacing is improving! The first few pages vary too much...but the recipient says that she is all right with that, like it's part of the memory and my experience in making it

How do you not get hand cramps from it? @_@

There are lots of example of calligraphy from the Middle Ages that is WAY uneven. Perfection is rare!

To avoid cramps, only grip your pen hard enough to keep it from slipping. Don't squeeze it.

Aha, this would be a problem I definitely have. Other than my nib being bent XD Thank you very much for the advice, again! My family and I are going on a cabin trip, and that's usually when I make the biggest progress on the book. >=3

This is a marvelous piece. The letters are nicely done and there's a lot of attention to detail in both writing and the illuminations. If it's been given in 2003 I doubt you're able to get another photo of it? It is really beautiful.

Thanks! I may be able to get a another photo from the recipient... still working on that.

This is beautiful. The writing is so remarkably even. The gilding and gouache produce a really nice effect. The piece is also well balanced with the p's stem in the upper left and the griffin in the lower right.

Truly amazing

This looks gorgeous!

Yet another thing I'm interested in getting into while in the SCA...our little shire up here had a collegium back in October and I basically stayed in the scribal arts classroom all day! *laughs!* I learned a lot, but I still have a lot more to learn.

Even though I don't know-how or the right tools and equipment, I just did a blank scroll for the fun of it [link] It's not accurate, but not bad for not knowing what I was doing, or even for the first try I'm hoping to get gouache for Christmas so I can try making scrolls

Gilding...I had no idea that gold leaf was so...fly-away! Or stuck to my fingers when I actually caught it...

Also, not sure if you remember a while back, I was inquiring about pewter-crafting...Here's what my little project turned out like
[link]
Again, not bad for a first attempt at playing with pewter.

I hope you do get some gouache! It's really fun to work with. Gilding is a pain but it can be worth it. I think you would do some kick-ass scrolls!

Nice little pewter tokens! I think the blobby background is charming but if you want to control exactly how it turns out, you have to do a two-part mold, which is more bother.

Yeah, I haven't tried doing a two-part mold yet, but it's still not bad for the first try

I thought about this after I had made those pewter tokens too...I wonder what would happen if I just pour the molten pewter onto the soapstone mold, and then just top it with another block of soapstone? Maybe really carefully, so it doesn't make too much of a mess or splashes or something...I haven't tried it yet, but it was an idea, anyways.

Yeah, I've never worked with gouache before, but I'm excited to give it a try I figured I'd get used to making scrolls with gold paint and then gradually get into gilding...it seems like an advance thing to do. One scribe over on the LJ Scribes community sent me a glomp of the gold paint he uses and it looks just as nice as the gold leaf. So...maybe once I get the hang of scrolls, I can eventually get into gildling I'm also hoping to get a calligraphy pen with different sizes of nibs...and a calligraphy book too. During the collegium, I was practicing on a gothic calligraphy style in the Calligraphy Bible...that's such a neat book!

What type of paper do you use for your scrolls? I learned the hard way not to use bristol board, and I'd like to see if I can check out our art supplies stores around here to see if they'll have the right kind of paper for the job (can't afford vellum right now).

Real vellum is the best, of course, but any good art paper will do as long as it's acid-free. A smooth, non-gloss surface works best for me.

Oh neat, thanks! I'll be sure to check out my art store whenever I can make it down there the next time
