In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update .


What's New


The New deviantART Mobile Site

One of the most common requests from the community has been to update deviantART's mobile site. By popular demand, we've released a brand new version of the mobile site! The site is officially supported in the default browsers for the iPhone and Android phones and tablets.


Instead of developing two separate versions of the site—a desktop version and a mobile version—we've formatted the desktop site to fit into a mobile browser. This allows the mobile site to offer many more features than the previous version did, and it also makes for a more smooth user experience. The end result is a seamless mobile site, and it looks a little like this:



  • You can Browse art, check your Message Center, reply to Notes, browse your friends' Profiles and Galleries, visit the Forums, view today's Daily Deviations and do almost everything else you can on the desktop version of the site!
  • The drop down menu usually located in the top left corner of the site can be accessed by tapping on the deviantART logo, allowing you to easily access familiar tools without complication. 


  • You can find wallpapers for your phone using the "Wallpaper" app available in the main menu!
  • The Message Center is located in one place, which makes responding to comments and browsing art and Journals a quick, easy experience. Deviants who enjoy viewing their Message Center one section at a time can tap on the arrow next to "Messages" at the top of the Message Center. This will prompt the Message Center's left sidebar to appear and allow selection one section of the Message Center to view at a time.
  • Journal Skin designers, if you'd like control how your skin looks in a mobile browser, learn how to use our new mobile media queries .

Prints Integration on Deviation Pages

We've implemented an easier way to purchase art on deviantART! When viewing a deviation that is enabled as a Print, you'll be met with a sleek new menu that is designed to be simple and straightforward.



We've moved the Prints functionality from its own separate page and placed it within the deviation page, to help artists sell more of their work, and to reduce friction for buyers looking to purchase art they love.



Because the functionality of the old Prints pages has been added to the deviation page, you can now preview how your Prints purchase will look without having to leave the deviation page! Once you select a product type, the preview will update to reflect your selection.


The New Submit Art Page (Beta Testers Only)

Beta Testers, we're bringing you a complete revamp of the Submit Art page! While the page you're familiar with has been a long-standing part of deviantART, the new page is designed to be more intuitive, user-friendly, and up to date with deviantART as it is today.

Sta.sh Writer

  • Thumbnails of literature submitted through Sta.sh Writer appearing in stacks in the Message Center would have misaligned stack corners. Fixed by kemayo
  • Menus in Sta.sh Writer have been changed to be a little more responsive; you can now mouse from one to another without having to click. Fixed by kemayo
  • Classes are now allowed on span tags, for skinning purposes. Fixed by Alisey
  • Efficiency of fetching your Friends List in Sta.sh Writer's sidebar has been improved; less unnecessary data is pulled, and the menu builds faster. Fixed by kemayo and inazar

Thanks very much for the feedback left on last week's update ! Here's some of the feedback you left for us.

  • The most common response regarding the friends system was that deviants would like an easy way to separate lists of who they watch from lists of deviants who are their friends. Dramira-Official mentioned that this could also be applied to the Message Center, where new messages from friends could be listed before the general watch section.
  • lohkk and Yamitora1 suggested that an easy means of managing and organizing one's friendslist would be helpful, and ShapeShifter314 mentioned that being able to search through one's friends list would be useful as well.
  • Some deviants would like stacks within folders in their Message Center. Suggested by Krisoyo
  • A search function in Group galleries would be helpful. Suggested by IcyPheonix
  • Deviants would like notes sent to Groups to be included in their Sent Notes folder. Suggested by alexpeanut and Magical525
  • It would be helpful to be able to add keywords to Groups, so that they can be found more easily when searching in the Groups Portal . Suggested by MartinSilvertant
  • Some members would like to apply custom CSS to their Gallery's Featured folder. Suggested by Veroom

sorry guys, but the new version of dA mobile does not work on my phone! maybe it's just my problem, but now it seems all messed up, and it's a real shame because I use a lot (or should I say I used) the phone! and then, how do you log out? no, I don't like it, sorry, could I get back the old version? need help!!!

About Mobile site.
I don't access from my phone ( I have no internet connection on it and, frankly, I don't need to be online even from the phone) but, as far as I know, movile sites were the lit versions of the main site, am I right? So, why have a mobile version that's basically the same as the default site?
Shouldn't the mobile be an html basic site to be accessed by all cell phones, including NOT smartphones?

New submit page.
Judging from the cap alone, it's too white-y - why white and grey when the rest of the site is green?
But, besides the style, the new page (again, only from cap being not a Beta tester) seems to me the kind of look pages based on scripts look. I mean, see Photobucket or similar when you need to load java or a similar heavy script just to have access to a function that it's always been lighter before. I hope it's not the case here.

Better management of friends/watching has been needed for years, I've asked for it a few times on site update posts, but hopefully someone can suggest a concrete way of doing it. I'm all for being able to separate friends from people I admire or watch. Separation of this kind in the messages would be great too - that way you can keep a closer watch on people close to you, and push the avalanche of posts from groups to the bottom.

I love the new mobile version

The old one was sooo annoying. I couldn't comment on user's profiles (or read comments that already existed there), I couldn't see polls and hot topics, commenting on deviations was like gambling (will it be sent or not?), I could only see some of the comments there, and worst of all: in the stack where I could see the new deviations (my watches), it never said who's the deviant that created it or if I got in in my stack because I watched a group...now I have the information in the thumbnail and can even see how many comments have been written. Pure luxury!!!

The changes are fantastic! Thanks so much, guys!

I would like to have an option to set the "wmode" HTML tag to "direct" instead of the default "window" when posting Flash deviations that use the new Flash Player 11, where Adobe have added a whole bunch of new features that dA does NOT support as it is. It would be like 2 radio buttons to select either the default "window" or "direct" wmode rendering mode tag in the HTML when posting at the Flash categories. As it stands, Flash deviations that feature new functionality from Adobe Flash Player 11 load, but will not work. Here [link] is an example SWF file that will not work until dA supports direct mode for Flash Player 11.

On my cell phone now (T-mobile htc My Touch) and loving the new mobile layout, but somethings overlap each other. Other than that navigation is smoother as well more advantages! Keep up the god work DA.

I have a suggestion, something I find I'm missing a lot when using my Message Center. Would this be possible to display new deviations submitted to groups separately from deviations submitted by the deviants I watch? I watch a lot of groups, most of which can submit up to a hundred pictures a day - an amount I can't possibly get through unless I actually have a few hours to spend just looking at art, and I usually prefer to let them sit in my message center waiting for a free day like this. With people I watch, however, I often need or want to get back to them as soon as they upload something, and digging through all the group deviations to find them proves really frustrating and time-consuming. It would be great to have those kinds of deviations separated, so that it would be possible to check out the new deviations in whatever order someone prefers. I have the feeling some fellow deviants might find it useful as well

1. Groups: The layout of the 'manage members' section is still screwed up. It's random instead of alphabetical.

2. Groups: Make it easier for group admins to browse the 'manage members' list by making it one big list, instead of being forced to click 'next page' each time. Especially when someone's name begins with a letter that's at the end of the alphabet.

3. Memberlist: Give it the same layout as the friends/watch list.

Once again, a move towards form over function from dA, scuttling the mobile site for all but what seems to be those on modern smartphones and tablets. Every one of those poor, smelly, unwashed commoners on older gear or out in the scrubs where they only just discovered fire let alone mobile phones? Pha, let them eat no site or a very slow site! Console browsers? Nope! Use a real computer or mobile device, you strange person, you!

As far as I can tell you need to enable javascript for this to work at all. Javascript, which causes many other sites to crash. Javascript, that slows everything down because the browser has to load a hundred million flash adverts. Javascript, which is just plain unstable on older devices. Combined with the massive thumbnails that slow down desktop browsing in the first place, this is a real mess. You've built a mobile site that's only mobile to about a quarter of users by the look of it - and that's if you're lucky.

You seriously need a mobile-lite version, dA. This one is far too big, far too clunky, and far too non-functional for people using older devices or console browsers. It takes upwards of a minute to fully load on a PS3. A PS3 that's three feet away from a high speed wifi connection, so I dread to think what it's like on a mobile device with a poor 3G signal.

It all looks very pretty but that's not worth anything if we can't get it to work. Let us do the artistic bits, you guys can handle making the site WORK before you make it look pretty, PLEASE?

I'm on my iPod at the minute, and although it's great to see the new design, and be able to submit journals, I have to say that I preferred the old mobile layout. It was a lot faster and in general easier to work with.

I don't know if it's just me, but I'd like to say that I really hate the new ad layout. It's really intrusive and annoying when I go the comments section to read comments, not an ad. Yes, I do realise that is the aim of having it there but it's better off on the side and out of the way.

Amazing job on the deviantART Mobile Site. I don't use it myself, but I'm sure a whole bunch of people would find it useful. I know I'd like to be able to have DA any time, anywhere.
Regarding being able to apply custom CSS to their Gallery's Featured folder, I've been wanting to customize my Featured folder for a while. Besides CSS, I'd like to see some of the features we have on our gallery's folders, such as adding some text that people would be able to read as soon as they enter our gallery, not having to enter a folder to read a message from the artist. Besides the Text, I think options such as Text Placement and Arrange should also be available. Basically, since it's our main gallery page, the only thing that might not be so needed is the Icon. CSS is a PM feature only and I think anyone that has customized their gallery folders would like to customize their Featured page as well, so please take this into consideration.

I saw it with my iPod touch already and
I can barely notice the comment, reply and note section since all notices together.
I dont think comment+reply section are on the bottom of the page.
I prefer it look like before (when I was still regular member).

BUT. the only thing I like is the PREVIEW before replying! yay!

it would be nice not to have large thumbnails on galleries.

also, could it be easier for admins to remove deviations form groups, at the moment it says "removed from folder" which is pretty confusing.
also a setting that means mature art automatically can't be submitted if the admins wish.
