In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update .


What's New


The New deviantART Mobile Site

One of the most common requests from the community has been to update deviantART's mobile site. By popular demand, we've released a brand new version of the mobile site! The site is officially supported in the default browsers for the iPhone and Android phones and tablets.


Instead of developing two separate versions of the site—a desktop version and a mobile version—we've formatted the desktop site to fit into a mobile browser. This allows the mobile site to offer many more features than the previous version did, and it also makes for a more smooth user experience. The end result is a seamless mobile site, and it looks a little like this:



  • You can Browse art, check your Message Center, reply to Notes, browse your friends' Profiles and Galleries, visit the Forums, view today's Daily Deviations and do almost everything else you can on the desktop version of the site!
  • The drop down menu usually located in the top left corner of the site can be accessed by tapping on the deviantART logo, allowing you to easily access familiar tools without complication. 


  • You can find wallpapers for your phone using the "Wallpaper" app available in the main menu!
  • The Message Center is located in one place, which makes responding to comments and browsing art and Journals a quick, easy experience. Deviants who enjoy viewing their Message Center one section at a time can tap on the arrow next to "Messages" at the top of the Message Center. This will prompt the Message Center's left sidebar to appear and allow selection one section of the Message Center to view at a time.
  • Journal Skin designers, if you'd like control how your skin looks in a mobile browser, learn how to use our new mobile media queries .

Prints Integration on Deviation Pages

We've implemented an easier way to purchase art on deviantART! When viewing a deviation that is enabled as a Print, you'll be met with a sleek new menu that is designed to be simple and straightforward.



We've moved the Prints functionality from its own separate page and placed it within the deviation page, to help artists sell more of their work, and to reduce friction for buyers looking to purchase art they love.



Because the functionality of the old Prints pages has been added to the deviation page, you can now preview how your Prints purchase will look without having to leave the deviation page! Once you select a product type, the preview will update to reflect your selection.


The New Submit Art Page (Beta Testers Only)

Beta Testers, we're bringing you a complete revamp of the Submit Art page! While the page you're familiar with has been a long-standing part of deviantART, the new page is designed to be more intuitive, user-friendly, and up to date with deviantART as it is today.

  • When changing the main file of an item originally uploaded through an app, the app attribution will now be cleared. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Non-Latin characters are now cleanly stripped from uploaded items' titles, as deviation titles still only support latin characters. Fixed by kouiskas
  • When going inside a stack, into an item, and then back to the stack, uploading a file inside the stack would put the file in Sta.sh instead of the stack. Fixed by kouiskas
Sta.sh Writer

  • Thumbnails of literature submitted through Sta.sh Writer appearing in stacks in the Message Center would have misaligned stack corners. Fixed by kemayo
  • Menus in Sta.sh Writer have been changed to be a little more responsive; you can now mouse from one to another without having to click. Fixed by kemayo
  • Classes are now allowed on span tags, for skinning purposes. Fixed by Alisey
  • Efficiency of fetching your Friends List in Sta.sh Writer's sidebar has been improved; less unnecessary data is pulled, and the menu builds faster. Fixed by kemayo and inazar

Thanks very much for the feedback left on last week's update ! Here's some of the feedback you left for us.

  • The most common response regarding the friends system was that deviants would like an easy way to separate lists of who they watch from lists of deviants who are their friends. Dramira-Official mentioned that this could also be applied to the Message Center, where new messages from friends could be listed before the general watch section.
  • lohkk and Yamitora1 suggested that an easy means of managing and organizing one's friendslist would be helpful, and ShapeShifter314 mentioned that being able to search through one's friends list would be useful as well.
  • Some deviants would like stacks within folders in their Message Center. Suggested by Krisoyo
  • A search function in Group galleries would be helpful. Suggested by IcyPheonix
  • Deviants would like notes sent to Groups to be included in their Sent Notes folder. Suggested by alexpeanut and Magical525
  • It would be helpful to be able to add keywords to Groups, so that they can be found more easily when searching in the Groups Portal . Suggested by MartinSilvertant
  • Some members would like to apply custom CSS to their Gallery's Featured folder. Suggested by Veroom

Mobile site, opera mini 4.4 using J2ME. I know DA doesn't give a crab about dumbphone browser support the browser but if you could fix it along the way i'll be really grateful. Doesn't any other mobile user experience the same problem?

Nope! We took a different approach to this beta release than normal, it's only open to half of the beta testing program at this moment in time, so if you're seeing the old one, that's why.

In my opinion dA mobile was perfect in the way it was before, it was simple, it loaded fast and it was compatible with a lot of devices I have tried before, now It DOESN'T work properly, it technically looks like the regular site and it takes forever to load. You are forgetting the most important: Not every dA user owns an iPhone or Android phones or tablets. It makes me sad because I spend more time on my phone than on my computer and now I can't use dA.

Not saying I have a problem with this, it's just that I think that there should be a DA app for iphone and android, it would be brilliant, it is a lot of work to make one, but there should be one it would make things a lot easier, well that is my oppion ^_^

The mobile site for the iPhone is pretty buggy in some areas, like overlapping boxes and badly cropped text.
And muro has overlaps everywhere.

I have not used and I hope to never use the phone mobile site. Not that I hate it, but my phone is an old samsung and as much as they say it can go on line, HA! No. It's has like a 2 in high screen.

But for those who do use it on their phone and are having problems, I would like to suggest, to DA, that you give the person the choice of where they want to go. Old Layout (older phones) or New Layout (iphone and newer phones).

Years ago, I saw this done when the browser war was at it's height and there was a real difference in how you saw a site depending on the browser that you used. Some made it automatic, and others had you choose.

So unless there is a technical reason why the old layout can't be used, I think giving the mobile users a choice is a good way to go.

This is new update is extremely frustrating. I don't have an Android phone because I work at Walmart and I'm poor (lol) However, I have a prepaid Verizon Samsung Intensity II Phone, with very VERY limited mobile access. But DA used to work fine on it before this update, when I signed in I couldn't see any of my notes or messages, and couldn't check any new deviations. All I can do is browse profiles.

I really hope this gets fixed soon because I cant afford a better phone. -_-'

I prefer the old mobile site. Much easier to use than this squashed desktop interface. All the old version needed was a few bug fixes and stuff like a watch button.
On this new one searching is now a pain as is going through messages and even just logging out.
Bring back the old mobile site!

Clearly I must be doing something wrong on my phone browser. You see the original mobile version of DA worked just fine, I was able to check my messages and browse DA quite happily. Now with the update I can't check my messages as the layout of the site goes squ-iff and won't load correctly. As I speak I've just changed the layout from mobile view to desktop site via the link provided by DA and now when I click my messages nothing on my message page loads. I have a pretty good phone, a HTC Wildfire S and as the rest of the internet works and loads perfectly it's clearly DA which is at fault. As they say if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Well done DA.

I'm not sure if anyone has posted anything like this or not, but I will post it anyway.

I am using a Droid 4 running on android 4.04 (if that makes any difference) and the new mobile site seems cramped in portrait mode, causing some of the buttons to overlap or be misplaced.

I still prefer to use the regular site on my phone, but the mobile version is a big improvement.

Posted this somewhere else by mistake about the mobile site haha I hope this isnt gonna be ignored since its a frustrating problem for me at least. Deviantart listen to your users more please

Um so i feel that the old front mobile page of DA was much better than the main page now. In the old one, you got to see 4 pictures featured and it loads quickly. You also can easily browse for more with the arrow key.

In the new one however, it takes very long to load the front page and you can only see the first picture. It doesnt help very much as showcasing more ART should be what deviantART is about right?

Also, when searching for pictures on my phone, the new format makes it a real pain. Its so difficult to get the "newest" results and instead you get the default "popular". The old searching way was much more convenient and quick. It loads faster as well.

I love the new mobile format on our DA profiles as we can see and comment on people's pages. BIG PLUS. For the rest of the site, it could be simplified a lot more but the two problems listed above are a major bane when going mobile.

Please do consider reverting back to the old format for the searching devations and front page (and maybe simplify how the rest of the site functions?) Thank you.

personally I think some of the things are better, but some things simply don't suit the mobile version as it is right now. Only used the old mobile site a few times so I can't really compare the two versions much in terms of ease of useability, I just use the desktop mode as it's a lot more convenient and easier to use then both versions of the mobile site for the times I've used them

Yes, a lot of people have said its annoying and I can understand that but on my behalf, since I don't get to use the computer much it makes life easier for me and I can view polls and groups and see other things that I couldn't on the older version
But again, that is just my opinion
