In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update .


What's New


The New deviantART Mobile Site

One of the most common requests from the community has been to update deviantART's mobile site. By popular demand, we've released a brand new version of the mobile site! The site is officially supported in the default browsers for the iPhone and Android phones and tablets.


Instead of developing two separate versions of the site—a desktop version and a mobile version—we've formatted the desktop site to fit into a mobile browser. This allows the mobile site to offer many more features than the previous version did, and it also makes for a more smooth user experience. The end result is a seamless mobile site, and it looks a little like this:



  • You can Browse art, check your Message Center, reply to Notes, browse your friends' Profiles and Galleries, visit the Forums, view today's Daily Deviations and do almost everything else you can on the desktop version of the site!
  • The drop down menu usually located in the top left corner of the site can be accessed by tapping on the deviantART logo, allowing you to easily access familiar tools without complication. 


  • You can find wallpapers for your phone using the "Wallpaper" app available in the main menu!
  • The Message Center is located in one place, which makes responding to comments and browsing art and Journals a quick, easy experience. Deviants who enjoy viewing their Message Center one section at a time can tap on the arrow next to "Messages" at the top of the Message Center. This will prompt the Message Center's left sidebar to appear and allow selection one section of the Message Center to view at a time.
  • Journal Skin designers, if you'd like control how your skin looks in a mobile browser, learn how to use our new mobile media queries .

Prints Integration on Deviation Pages

We've implemented an easier way to purchase art on deviantART! When viewing a deviation that is enabled as a Print, you'll be met with a sleek new menu that is designed to be simple and straightforward.



We've moved the Prints functionality from its own separate page and placed it within the deviation page, to help artists sell more of their work, and to reduce friction for buyers looking to purchase art they love.



Because the functionality of the old Prints pages has been added to the deviation page, you can now preview how your Prints purchase will look without having to leave the deviation page! Once you select a product type, the preview will update to reflect your selection.


The New Submit Art Page (Beta Testers Only)

Beta Testers, we're bringing you a complete revamp of the Submit Art page! While the page you're familiar with has been a long-standing part of deviantART, the new page is designed to be more intuitive, user-friendly, and up to date with deviantART as it is today.

Sta.sh
  • When changing the main file of an item originally uploaded through an app, the app attribution will now be cleared. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Non-Latin characters are now cleanly stripped from uploaded items' titles, as deviation titles still only support latin characters. Fixed by kouiskas
  • When going inside a stack, into an item, and then back to the stack, uploading a file inside the stack would put the file in Sta.sh instead of the stack. Fixed by kouiskas
Sta.sh Writer

  • Thumbnails of literature submitted through Sta.sh Writer appearing in stacks in the Message Center would have misaligned stack corners. Fixed by kemayo
  • Menus in Sta.sh Writer have been changed to be a little more responsive; you can now mouse from one to another without having to click. Fixed by kemayo
  • Classes are now allowed on span tags, for skinning purposes. Fixed by Alisey
  • Efficiency of fetching your Friends List in Sta.sh Writer's sidebar has been improved; less unnecessary data is pulled, and the menu builds faster. Fixed by kemayo and inazar

Thanks very much for the feedback left on last week's update ! Here's some of the feedback you left for us.

  • The most common response regarding the friends system was that deviants would like an easy way to separate lists of who they watch from lists of deviants who are their friends. Dramira-Official mentioned that this could also be applied to the Message Center, where new messages from friends could be listed before the general watch section.
  • lohkk and Yamitora1 suggested that an easy means of managing and organizing one's friendslist would be helpful, and ShapeShifter314 mentioned that being able to search through one's friends list would be useful as well.
  • Some deviants would like stacks within folders in their Message Center. Suggested by Krisoyo
  • A search function in Group galleries would be helpful. Suggested by IcyPheonix
  • Deviants would like notes sent to Groups to be included in their Sent Notes folder. Suggested by alexpeanut and Magical525
  • It would be helpful to be able to add keywords to Groups, so that they can be found more easily when searching in the Groups Portal . Suggested by MartinSilvertant
  • Some members would like to apply custom CSS to their Gallery's Featured folder. Suggested by Veroom

And your perfectly welcome to that opinion ^_^ For the few times I used the older version, I found it basically useless for what I wanted to do, at least with the newer version I can go to the things I want even if it takes forever to load compared to the speed I'm used to from other sites. Still, desktop version to me is better. Mobile version has a long way to go before it's flawless, but at least they're trying to make it better then it was

I respect how DeviantArt has not fallen to the world of lost picture quality that plagues the mobile world. I understand you want the peoples art to be the quality they intended. Technology needs to just catch up with you guys. Haha which is why DA is still the best art site.

Take it easy /fanning you/ i don't see anyone as enemy (other than the new mobile site). I just found it ironically funny that they made it for iphone users, yet some of them can't use it. Some other part of users do like it though, i wonder if there are so many that like it that da forces the change :sigh:

I can't move my notes to other folder in mobile site, opera mini (yes yes i know you dont support it) just pass through the check and starred button. Could you add move to drag down box inside note like reply, reply to all etc?

Negative stamps aren't going to change it any faster, nor is it a better way to go about it. Constructive criticism and outlining in detail the issues and what could be done to fix it is a better approach to the situation. Also, just because someone has a smartphone doesn't mean it automatically works. If you read the comments there were several people with androids and iPhones (IE myself) where the site was either unmanageable or unresponsive.

As much as I love new things. The new mobile site is really clunky and awful. .w.

I loved the old one because I would use it to check my messages in the morning before I went to work. It was nice and compact and simple. Now it just looks like a super compact version of the desktop site .w.

When (and I'm not speaking for everyone) I use the mobile version, I don't EXPECT to be able to use all the features from the desktop version. If I want to, I use my laptop or request a desktop version when on my phone (and connected to a WiFi). The point in a mobile site is to limit the data you use, make it fast and compact. This just looks like the desktop site got squashed into a screen.

That and when I click comments, it just loads the whole message bank. Including deviations, journals, polls etc. Not just Comments. .w.

Sowwy, but I really liked the old mobile site for it's simplicity. That and it was kinda cute and small. .w.

one thing i really think is needed is;

an organized list that has the names of deviants that have declined invitations, to a group. This would be helpful, because its hard to remember which deviants have declined invitations, and you might end up re-inviting then, which can get annoying, i know this first hand, that's why im suggesting this.

I like the old mobile site better this new one is pretty made. I know it's in the beta but wow. I can't respond to notes with out having to try it 5 different times. I can't even check if the notes I sent have been read. Then there's the fact after I try to send a note all my notes vanish.

Now I can't accesss all the pictures I get through my watches. Or even the journals.

I lIke the new user page layout but that is it really. There are way to many flaws with this thing.

"The site is officially supported in the default browsers for the iPhone and Android phones and tablets." - forgive my saying so, but LIKE HELL IT IS. Does not work on Android 2.3 - devices using that version are still in stores. ( Just bought mine a couple weeks ago ).

Hey there! While we do offer support for Android, it's much the same as the support we offer for browsers on computers, we offer support for the most recent version of each. While 2.3 is programmed by default into phones still on sale, the Android software has been updated quite a bit since 2.3 was launched. If you update your phone's software, the site should work properly for you.

You say that as though updating the friggin thing is easy. 2.3.4, straight talk prepaid plan, ALWAYS says "No update available."

Like it or not, Walmart runs the world now... They are not allowing software updates, and these lower cost phones probably couldn't run them anyway ( ~800MHz CPU, probably an older model )

This is a very real problem that cannot be easily solved on our end, what I can't understand is why the inbox cannot have a noscript fallback.

I know the general development strategy is to aim at the 80% in circulation, but I believe they are underestimating Walmart's upcoming market share. The straight talk plan offers smart phones for HALF the price that previous carriers have been. $200 for the phone and $45 a month including data... this market is/will be exploding as these phones have finally reached the price-point of older cell phones.

If I could do an update and it would magically fix it, I would. I am one of the upcoming masses that CANNOT. But then, being marginalized is nothing new for most people - artist's especially.

I am not blaming you or the developers, I am just frustrated in general. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Heya! If you're on your iPad, there should be a "Switch to Mobile Site" link at the bottom of any page on dA. Alternatively, you can go to m.deviantart.com, which should trigger the mobile site.

I agree with the people against the new mobile site whole heartedly. The old mobile site was exactly that, a mobile site, so no, it's not going to have all the same features as the full site. But this new mobile site is awkward, I have to scroll to see everything, and now only one message at a time shows up. This is really inconvenient, and I much prefer the organization of the old one.

I had actually thought when I first logged in that I may have disabled the mobile version by accident, but when I scrolled down, found that wasn't the case. I hate the fact that I have to zoom in to click things properly and all my messages show up at once instead of separated like the old version.

I don't know if you can revert back to the older version, but I can guarantee that I will be using this version a lot less.
