Description
Here is the second part of the tut, I'm really not good at talking into the camera so I didn't say a heck of a lot. I may make a nose and mouth and even a hair and skin tut. If anything filming this drawing has helped with my procasternating! To view the video you need to click on the download button to the right.

Oh my GOODNESS!!! Your tutorial is SO helpful!! I had so many questions that were answered! THANK YOU so MUCH!~
but how do you draw with a mechanical pencil and not get sharp lines when youre trying to make them smooth? I always try but when i turn the pencil i get like a scratch on the paper and theirs a white line from it when i erase and go over it again..

I don't press to hard, just hard enough to get a nice dark line....oh and the Bristol paper I use is strong and thick, I would think a mech pencil would not be good on thinner drawing paper.

hey i just watched all the videos you have. im sure ill be back to them as reference tools often. its great to see these in pogress and understand how you do them. for a while i thought you did them with black magic because theyre so good. lol
anyway. i notice you have a paper under your hand. is that to prevent your hand from smudging what you already have penciled in. i dont know why but i never thought of doing that. when i watched the nose i was going to ask why u used tissue instead of the blending stump on the cheek but i guess u answered it here.
thanks for the great tutorials!
oh and .. im no artist thats for sure but is it possible to create something..ehh.. close to this with just a regular #2 pencil. i don't have all the different pencils. and im not likely to go out and by a bunch. drawing is more of a hobby and one im not willing to fund to deeply. so if its possible to do this with just a couple common pencils thatd be great.
thanks again!(and to ianwilgaus on the tip about cotton swabs... im so cheap lol)

Thank you for the comments. I use the paper under my hand for two reasons, one to not smudge an area that has graphite and two to not get any oils from my hand on the clean paper, it's just something I been doing for many years.
As for pencils.....Go to a local art and craft store like Michaels and get a 3b, B and H graphite pencils, that's all I use and they cost about a $1 each. A #2 pencil is good for doing sketches, but you won't be able to go very dark, the pencils I recommended will give you a perfect range of tones....oh and pick up a smooth Bristol pad (under $5) and you will be set!!

ahh the oils of course lol
thanks for responding. i didn't know the pencils were that cheap. my boyfriend is in school studying art and he's invested hundreds of dollars on supplies. but thinking about it now i think that was mostly in paints.
thanks for your advice and great tutorials!

Please do continue, it's wonderful to be able to see you work. If you could do one that explains how you get the preliminaries down, that would be awesome. I've tried using the grid but my proportions still seem a bit off.
Practice, practice practice..
Just need more time, time time..
Thanks again
D.

A 1/2 inch or 1/4 grid is the best for getting all the proportions perfect, I use different sizes for different drawings. Also try turning the paper and gridded photo upside down, your eye sees the shapes much better this way. When I get chance I will try to make a little video on how I grid and transferee the reference.

you should definately do tuts for other parts... even one for mapping out facial features, like proportions and things like that. I always find that really hard.
again, this was awesome!

I enjoyed watching your tutorial and I hope to see more in the future. I like your techniques and I just recently discovered how useful blending stumps can be while drawing a charcoal portrait, so I'm glad to see how it can be used to create amazing art like what you have.

When you start off, and you do like 2 steps, I allready find it perfect,
but you just keep on going and in the end it looks just incredibly amazing!

Out of curiousity, where do you get your mechanical pencils ...with different levels of B lead? I use a 5.0 mechanical pencil with standard? lead. I was just curious Other than that this was great thanks for sharing

I found an art supply store that carried pentel 3b refils for the mechanial pencils and have ordered them online a few times, may have been Blick Art.

I like your voice, you speak with confidence in what yur doing. So please continue I use a blending stump quiet often in my work aswell as cotton wool which I think gives a smoother finish, but then thats probly just me thinking that..lol I hope you do alot more tutorials I enjoyed them. Thanks
