Description
Hi i redrew one of the puppies eyes and scanned it in 5 stages, hope this little tut will be of some help:1) First I draw in a very light grid with a 2h pencil, I draw the outline of the eye then erase some of the grid and go back over the outline.
2) I take a sharp 2b pencil and go over the outline, drawing in some details.
3) I continue to draw in details and build up the dark areas, my pencil strokes follow the direction that hair grows in always.
4) I blend the outer eye area a little with tissue and draw in more details, I dab with a kneaded eraser to bring out some highlights.
5) I repeat step four. Then I take a semi clean blending stick and rub some areas of the eye ball following the reference photo tones carefully. I add a little more 2b to the dark areas, then blend more till I have a smooth shiny look with good darks, mid-tones and highlights.

I've seen images done with the "grid method" before. Do you always use it, yourself? If so, you've got to be one of the only artists I've found who uses it so effectively! I have trouble drawing portraits myself, so I think I might practice this technique! Lovely art, this really makes me want to pick up my pencils again!
