Description First off, I've gotta credit Starfinder for making the tutorials I used to make my photo-realistic work. Her website has tutorials with a similar style. I often point to her when people ask "how do you do that?", but her website's tutorial links aren't working sometimes (her tutorials are also much better and simpler to follow, plus she's got more experience doing this kinda stuff).
Second, don't use a reference photo and try to draw exactly from the picture. I look at several photos to get a good sense of the overall pattern of fur and shape of the animals or humans I'm drawing, don't look at just one picture. If you do make a picture that looks exactly like your reference, please post link of the picture you ref'ed from. It's artistic courtesy because photographers work hard to get the right focus and composition for their pictures.
Also, I rushed when I made this so there are several mistakes. I note them when they pop up and I try to avoid spelling errors.
Enjoy!

this is really good, but the fur just doesn't look realistic. it looks semi-realistic. like a teddy-bear :3

Haha, yes well this is old as all hell. I like to think my rendering skills are better than this by now.

I asked my friend How to draw wolf fur (She's not that good at fur neither am I) and she was like "Tile the fur, that's all you do tile the fur. I SAID TILE!"

FablePaint In reply to rosewolf700 [2011-03-19 05:35:06 +0000 UTC]

oh lord, that's terrible advice! You couldn't get the right dimension if you did it that way. I'm a more hands-on kind of artist.

rosewolf700 In reply to FablePaint [2011-03-19 13:42:13 +0000 UTC]

She meant it in a kind of triangle tile I guess? But that's what I told her I was like"If I do this it'll look messed up!" so I'm glad I found this tutorial

this-is-great! just 2 questions tho. wat exactly do u mean go over the fur with lights and darks? do u get another brush and just go over it or something like dat? and also, how do u shade? (in th tutorial, like wat do u use)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FablePaint In reply to tiff13246 [2011-03-19 05:36:02 +0000 UTC]

light = lighter color than the normal color
dark = darker color than the normal color

you shade with a darker color

yes but some of the tools and brushes and sorts i dont have on my photoshop that ive seen o nthis tutorial i have elements 3.0 so yeah

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FablePaint In reply to wazmanventure [2009-11-01 06:24:40 +0000 UTC]

I think elements should be able to handle this. I used elements myself before. So long as you have a tablet, there shouldn't be a problem. These techniques are good even for painting.

Very helpful. I had the same idea on fur. 'Cept I chose a lighter color of the flat to do the actual fur. I think yours turned out better than mine did. I'll have to try this technique sometime. =] Thanks.
And I'm not feeling noble. I just like that smiley. XD
