Description I know I said I was going to make one a while back, but it completely slipped my mind. (Been doing a lot of different work over the past couple months. (Work work... Nothing fun.) But working mostly means animating and coding. Both of which are beginning to annoy and bore me.

But here's a quick and dirty hexagon tutorial. It covers making a simple head using a few spheres (no unimesh) but here it is. And it should help everyone get started.

If you download the hxn file as well as the PDF are in the zip. Should help get you started, and if you have questions feel free to ask.

But before anyone asks...
1. Yes, hexagon can make SecondLife sculpties.
2. No you would not be able to make a head like this and bring it in to SL.

Why? Because the "sculpties" as they're called are no where near the size of poly that anyone can do anything really really great with. (But I have seen great things with them, but the textures, and other features are what really shows them off and also... hides the flaws.)

Okay, well... I have more work to do. Enjoy the tutorial and if you have questions ask.

What program do you use? Is it downloadable? Or do you have to buy it?

For that tutorial I used Hexagon. I'm pretty sure Daz3d had a fully functional demo for a while. I don't know if they still do. But no, Hexagon is a program you have to pay for, though. But if you know of a free program out there (other than Blender I just hate that program. >.< I could always try making a simple tutorial for it.

Ok, thank you. I have always wanted to try to make an animal like the ones on Foopets.com. Could you please try and see if Daz3d has a tutorial still please? When you make the animal's basic features, like the face, do you have to draw it or does the shapes come made already, and you can mess with them?

Well, I checked the only trial available is for a Mac. If you're on a Mac I can give you the link. (I'm a PC user.) But those would be a little complicated to make, but no where near impossible. I don't really draw out a concept, but I know a lot of 3D artists do. For me I usually get something in my head and then just run with it.

But for Hexagon no you have to make the shapes and then push and pull vertices to shape it out the way you want.

Well, there's a few free programs out there that I know of off hand. Blender is one of them. (And it's got a learning curve... I don't like it but hundreds do.) There's also anim8or it's a free program but not as robust as some although, it does give a good start in to 3D. Art of illusion is another one that's a fairly good program but you have to have java installed on your computer.

Here's a link with a small list of free 3D modeling programs. But it's really preference of work flow when it comes to picking out one that suits your needs. I went for a few years before I found the ones that I really enjoy. Which are Lightwave and 3D Studio Max 6. (I don't like the new 3DS max because it's started to look too much like Maya.)

Could you possibly send me a few links?

Truespace 3D I started with that one years ago, but it wasn't robust enough for me.

Also a good one, but still lacking for fur, but you won't really find a free program that does fur.

Animator (anim8or) a fairly basic, but good 3D modeling program.

No problem. But really you just have to find the program that works the best for you. For me it's Lightwave, but that's a 900 dollar program so it's not a program I recommend if you're new to 3D modeling.

Ok. Yea, I don't have 900 dollars to spend. I'm only 15. I have saved all the links you gave me, and I think I'll try them out. I'll be posting some of my creations soon.

That's cool. And yeah, I only got Lightwave when I was in college so it was a good deal. I'll be watching you too to see what you come up with. If you have questions feel free to ask. I can usually help with 3D.

I watched you so I can keep in touch. I have many questions, and I'll note you them later. But One question I have is I made a 3d wolf. It sucks, but I can't find a way to save it as a pic file so I can post it on Da. I'll tell you what program it was when I reply. I don't remember the program, but kt's on my downstairs computer.

*laughs* That's fine if you tell me the format (extension of the file like obj, 3ds, mb, etc.) I can usually tell you what file it was made from. You can also feel free to e-mail me imago@imago3d.com with any questions also. I'm always happy to help out a fellow artist.

Well you remember, most sculpts or heavily sculpted objects need more than a single sculpt to make anything complex out of them. Normally it takes about 5, to generate something crazy.

True, but textures do a ton of the work. (And I hate texturing in SL and out. *laughs*) I just hope they never bring obj importing in to SL. I don't want to see a million Tie Fighters. >.<

They already know their servers can barely handle LSL, no way they'd be able to stomach .OBJ's

*laughs* But you know they would try to appease everyone. But SL is horribly boring. >.<

Hideously true, but it makes insane cash :3

Especially for us >:3

imago3d In reply to UnrealFox [2009-10-11 01:00:11 +0000 UTC]

*laughing* Which is the only reason we're still using it. But the people... Tell me... How can someone stand around doing nothing just staring at other avatars in idle? >.< God... Horrible.

But the money is good and it keeps flowing so as long as it's doing good for us we'll endure the boring parts. <3
