Description I'm so fed up with all the complaints about what I consider the greatest Superman movie ever. And here's why:

"It's too dark for Superman"
No, it's to dark for Richard Donner-style Superman. First of all, it's not darker. It's more serious. And yes, there IS a difference! Second, I'd ask if any of you have ever even picked up a comic, but I already know that Supes is a classic cast of what tvtropes.org calls "Complaining about Shows You Don't Watch". In other words, I can think of dozens of stories off the top of my head that are just as dark: "The Death of Superman", "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow", "Kingdom Come", "Red Son", the list goes on!

"Too much destruction"
Yeah, because "The Avengers" and the Transformers movies were so mild-mannered. Or that last Star Trek movie, where a giant fucking starship crashed into San Francisco, about 2x the damage from MoS. If anything, the Avengers are even more responsible for any collateral damage: they were fighting a bunch of "go down in one hit" kind of mooks. Superman was fighting guys with the same powers, plus military training. Plus, HEL-LOOOOOOOOOOO! Ever wonder if 90% of the people evacuated when they saw a giant fucking alien laser drill hovering over them!?

(Spoiler alert) "Superman killed Zod"
I know, right? How he mercilessly crushed his hand, then throws him into a chasm and shares a moment with Lois (who also had just killed someone) like nothi-...Oh, wait, that's "Superman II", the time nobody ever gave him crap about. This is the time where he was...well, it already says so right up there. There's a difference between killing to save lives and cold-blooded murder. Not only did Bats kill Rā's al Ghūl, he also tied a gargoyle to the Joker's leg and made him fall about 800 feet or so, and then there's how he shoved Harvey Dent off a building - hell that last one was literally the exact same situation that Superman was in!
EDIT: Not to mention when Iron Man killed a whole room full of thugs just because one of them broke a motherfucking Dora the Explorer watch. He literally told him he would be the first to die.

I know nobody likes Superman anymore, but give him a freaking chance! At least it's not "Superman Returns" (the one movie I hate more than that is "Iron Man 3").

I don't own. Rights to characters & films belong to DC comics.

Do not get me started on how freaking ASININE the hate complaints against MoS are....

Like you said (And bravo to you for saying so) Β if they want to compare that movie to the avengers, for freak sake, REWATCH THE AVENGERS, or as I like to call it, The Avengers vs. the Nerf aliens.

Alien serpent star ships that when they crash, literally FLOP on top of buildings like deflated hot air balloons, killing no one. Β Even when Hulk Judo throws one over his shoulder during his "I'm always angry" moment, he does it in a way it misses ALL THE POPULATED places and it doesn't even wreck the building.

What were the purposes of the Aliens anyway? Form a perimeter around the Tesseract...you know.....like their actual objectives? Or to just descend from the ships, shoot cafe tables and cars, MISSING people...I guess so that they could all heard them into a hotel lobby because.........Hell if i know.

Point being, in MoS, we got realistic destruction, give me a break.... Β

For me I just thought a lot of the plot points in this movie made zero sense. Like, Pa Kent was a gigantic idiot.Β "I have a superpowered son who can save our dog, but no I'll just go sacrifice my own life, making my family grieve over my easily preventable death." Not to mention how he chastised Clark for SAVING EVERYONE'S LIVES when the bus nearly drowned.

And like, when the Kryptonians attacked Ma Kent, Superman barreled into the one guy and just flew away, leaving the rest of the Kryptonians to easily kill his mother, and then after that he flew through the gas station and blew it up, killing whoever was working there. It just didn't seem that Superman was paying any attention to his surroundings and made him seem like a horribly ineffective superhero.

In his defense, that was about his second day being a "hero," (may well have been his first.) Day one with no training on how to fight people that are just like you and are specifically bred to be warriors...I think he deserves a little credit for at least getting the job done. He may not have been pretty, but I'm thinking he's going to try and work on that.

You don't get fired day one if you mess up a little.

BradJonas In reply to ScouterV [2014-05-31 21:20:36 +0000 UTC]

Inexperience doesn't justify killing the gas station worker or not making much of an effort to protect his own mother.

It was just a very poorly written movie.

EmperorMinilla In reply to BradJonas [2014-09-12 21:34:42 +0000 UTC]

Killing a gas station worker? You know... the gas station was still intact after he crashed through it... like, the whole gas station was pretty much intact even after the explosion .

ScouterV In reply to BradJonas [2014-05-31 22:29:49 +0000 UTC]

I guess we'd just agree to disagree then. My only problem with the movie was that it felt somewhat rushed, but that's what happens trying to tell two stories at once.

You are right. I don't know why people complain about Superman suddenly killing someone and *Oh look at that* he saved us all! He's a hero, making a life-death choice is part of the job. Even on Dragon Ball Z movies (Anime, no Evolution for god's sake!), Goku went for the killing blow without hesitating because he knew his enemies would destroy everything.

Anyway, I agree with you, I'm a Man of Steel fan too and Superman just did what had to be done.

maxvision92 In reply to ramasioti [2014-04-25 21:23:12 +0000 UTC]

No he didn't. Goku ALWAYS gave his enemies one last chance to stop and walk away. He let Vegeta go. He saved Freeza's life on Namek, it's Freeza who threw that chance away, Goku only killed him in self-defense. Heck, he wished Boo back to life before destroying him with the Spirit Bomb.

"It's too dark for Superman"
It is. Superman is an highly optimistic but not naive character. The movie completly tossed that out of the window and tried to apply Davd Goyer's Batman style on it wich doesn't work at all wich Superman because he's a much more light hearted and straight forward character then Batman is or in other words he is Batmans polar opposite. The only real drama and angst in Superman should come from how much he should use his powers to help humanity and that he doesn't wants to be seen as a messiah or god (a story about an Superman cult could be interesting for that). An Superman movie can start of rather grim but should become more and more positive towards the end. Th world could start as an grim and harsh place but slowly become more hopeful with Supes. In regards of the mentioned comics, it was already mentioned that most of them are non canon. But I think For The Man Who Has Everything was canon wich was a very good story. On Batman killing Ras: this was a really really weird scene. He really should've saved him. I mean there was still plenty of time. On the other hand its possible one of his agents picked up his corpse and put it into a Lazarus pit wich would make his appearence in DKR less a hallucination and more messing with Bats. The one from Tim burtosn Batman is also weird. I guess it was supposed to be an accident, that Bats actually just wanted to keep the Joker from escaping. Harvey Dent was another odd choice by Goyer. Why does he insists that Bats has to kill? Also Richard Donners Supes was the Silver Age version wich had more sillyness to it. My personal favourite is the Modern Age Supes but sadly the Man Of Steel Superman is much more like the New52 Superman wich is an angsty jerk.

"Too much destruction"
Its less about the destruction itself but more about the fact that Supes din't even tried to lure Zod away from Metropolis wich is usually his standart tactic. He simply didnt cared about any of the potential colleteral damage the fight would cause wich is completly untypical for him. He could've at least tried and even if it didn't worked much less people would've been upset about so much collateral damage.

"Superman killed Zod"
He didn't killed him in Superman II. I really don't know why they didn't included it into some releases but after the fight Zod and his henchmen are alive and imprisoned. This scene usually is on most DVD and Bluray releases (sometimes right in the moive sometimes in deleted scenes) as well as in most of the TV versions. The scene with Zod is bad because there was no explanation WHY Supes had a problem to kill in the first place. There was no accidental killing of an mugger or so in the first act wich would've set up Supes aversion to killing. Also the killing of Zod has no weight at all to it. He just does it and then mops about it. It would'Ve been much more dramatic if they set up the relationship between Zod and Supes different. Like having him being more like an evil mentor than a straight up villain. The scene is also so dumb because there where at leats two other ways he could've stopped Zod from roasting these people (who could've gotten away easily by the way). He could've hold his hand over Zods eyes or grab him and fly him away. It felt pointess at best especially since Goyer originally wanted a more typical ending with Zod being thrown back into the phantom zone but DC of all people wanted Supes to kill. Its just bizarre. I mean almost every other DC hero aside from Superman and Batman kill from time to time (you should see Aquamans kill score) and yet DC wants Superman of all their characters to straight up murder someone.

Otherwise the movie really deserves the majority of the flak it gets. While the characters where well portrayed in their introductionairy scenes later on they become shallow and boring Supes worshippers. Jonathan Kent is plain weird. They may believed that would make him seem more dramatic but it just ends up making him seem extremly irresponsible and stupid. "You have great powers that could help humanity, but you must never ever use them" Seriously? This also could've needed a mayor overhaul. Yes, they wanted to make clear that he worries about Clarks well being but the way they explain it is awful. That someone really looked over that part of the script and said "Yeah, that seems logical" still baffles me. Also all the supposed deep drama and angsting especially some parts of this hideously ill handled flash back sequence with Supes traveling the world was far from being interesting. It didn't set up anything about his personality like it did with Bats. To me this movie is style over substance.

Its not the worst movie of all time but its a failure of a Superman movie. But at least it as a sort of hommage to Superman II when Supes impales that guys truck (in Superman II, if I remeber correctly, he just shoved a guy who insulted him wich tossed him across the room).

Superman is the original hero and cherishes life and only would kill if no other options existed
Batman is the dark knight who constantly employs explosives and GUNS in the batmobile and batplane. between the comics, movies and cartoons the facts are that Batman is a sociopath and Superman is the second coming of Jesus Christ and if you're saying WHAT- read the book of Revelations where Jesus leads God's army and wipes out Satan's by killing and sending them to Hell. If Jesus can kill people for the greater good than so can Superman.
so stop giving Supes grief over Zod. Defense rests.
