Description
I'm so fed up with all the complaints about what I consider the greatest Superman movie ever. And here's why:"It's too dark for Superman"
No, it's to dark for Richard Donner-style Superman. First of all, it's not darker. It's more serious. And yes, there IS a difference! Second, I'd ask if any of you have ever even picked up a comic, but I already know that Supes is a classic cast of what tvtropes.org calls "Complaining about Shows You Don't Watch". In other words, I can think of dozens of stories off the top of my head that are just as dark: "The Death of Superman", "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow", "Kingdom Come", "Red Son", the list goes on!
"Too much destruction"
Yeah, because "The Avengers" and the Transformers movies were so mild-mannered. Or that last Star Trek movie, where a giant fucking starship crashed into San Francisco, about 2x the damage from MoS. If anything, the Avengers are even more responsible for any collateral damage: they were fighting a bunch of "go down in one hit" kind of mooks. Superman was fighting guys with the same powers, plus military training. Plus, HEL-LOOOOOOOOOOO! Ever wonder if 90% of the people evacuated when they saw a giant fucking alien laser drill hovering over them!?
(Spoiler alert) "Superman killed Zod"
I know, right? How he mercilessly crushed his hand, then throws him into a chasm and shares a moment with Lois (who also had just killed someone) like nothi-...Oh, wait, that's "Superman II", the time nobody ever gave him crap about. This is the time where he was...well, it already says so right up there. There's a difference between killing to save lives and cold-blooded murder. Not only did Bats kill RΔ's al GhΕ«l, he also tied a gargoyle to the Joker's leg and made him fall about 800 feet or so, and then there's how he shoved Harvey Dent off a building - hell that last one was literally the exact same situation that Superman was in!
EDIT: Not to mention when Iron Man killed a whole room full of thugs just because one of them broke a motherfucking Dora the Explorer watch. He literally told him he would be the first to die.
I know nobody likes Superman anymore, but give him a freaking chance! At least it's not "Superman Returns" (the one movie I hate more than that is "Iron Man 3").
I don't own. Rights to characters & films belong to DC comics.

i'm guessing most people just ignore that most of the damage done to the city was done by zod's gravity machine not by superman

Well if you notice in The Avengers, the ones that destroy buildings are The Avengers.
Take down ships on the streets.
Take down the giants flying things.
Hulk jumps destroys a wall and runs inside of a building.
Thor electrifies a building, that means people around the building could die by accident.
The aliens didnt attack, until The Avengers attack them.
The aliens never attack humans, still The Avengers kill the alien, not only that, they killed humans that were brainwashed and didnt knew what they were doing.
Marvel Heroes more people that DC ones, still people gets angry and mad the do, even when you can explain they had no choice.

Because then there would be no villains left without having to create more.Β Seriously, I think that and simply wanting to avoid depicting violence in early comics (that is ones before the 80s) were the only reasons.Β
I mean just think what Batman would be like if he used guns?Β Never mind if he doesn't kill people using guns (assume rubber bullets are used or he blows people's caps off).Β What would be the point of the story?Β I mean, if he just paralyzed the Joker right off the bat (no pun intended) what then?Β It would be off to the next villain, then the next, and the one after thatΒ until either the creators start losing fans because Batman is just incapacitating his adversaries all the times or the creators will have to start making Batman fight stronger villains.

Probably because it's often treated as one in-universe. I mean, yeah, there's a moral line, but sometimes it gets to the point where it's ridiculously hard to believe that killing the bad guy would cause more problems than it would solve.

I never really cared that he killed Zod. If I were to guess the reason why people were pissed about it is because those people had about five differentΒ escape routes, so he really didn't have to kill him. That family was just stupid. But again, never cared, never will. I'm not a fan of superman and this movie didn't change anything. That gravity nonsense and stupid stuff with atmosphere made no sense. Superman and Lois were bland and I spent most of the movie not caring about them. He was the bridge between two worlds yet destroyed any change of Kryptonians ever coming back because.... I have no bloody clue. The only people I cared about were the scientist guy, the general, Lois' boss, that guy who was trying to help him help the girl out of the rubble, and the girl in the rubble. Supermans fine, but he is hard to write for as he is just too damn perfect. By the way, does anyone else get the impression that kryptonite no longer works on him. He could fly in the atmosphere at the end, and since the planet-humper was terraforming it to recreate Krypton, he was standing on Kryptonite. Most of DCs superheros are a little too perfect to the point where they actually only have one 'weakness.' Oh well, in the end I don't care. 'Man of Steel' was average, 'Avengers' was awesome, and I think we can all agree that 'Green Lantern' was a piece of shit.

batman is highly overrated and superman gets a lot of flack for no reason but it's not so simple as that.
people are biased towards batman because he's well,... a rich human white male. people lash out at superman because he suffers from "psuedo human syndrome" aka raised as a human but can never be one.
this fanboyism is just a reflection of human self obsession.
even akira toriyama tried to make goku more human and gohan as a half human replacement for goku (that's why gohan surpassed goku in cell games,... it was by virtue of being "part human". the reason why goku bacame strongest again is because the writers spent less time pointing out that he is a psuedo human and thus saiyan just means super version of human to most people.)
fanboys just want a self insert to help them stroke their own egos at the end of the day. superman is difficult to insert into because they've never actually had to deal with the pressure of being "that damn good" or the follies it brings.

I always thought the dislike of Superman was, ironically enough, from thinking he was "too perfect". And not-dark.
Personally, I think all the negativity and complaining fanboys do now just gives us a bad name. Why can't we appreciate one thing without trashing another? I mean, I'm not against giving your opinion when you dislike something, but there are limits.

I agree with much of what you've just said. people desire darkness in stories. superman's powerlevel honestly is kind of mary-sue like. I do think that my reasons are also valid on the subject as well though.
dark stories are part of what make batman human. being too perfect makes supes come across as inhuman to those who don't read enough.
π: 0 β©: 1
ImdaBatman In reply to PwN3Rship [2014-01-28 23:36:13 +0000 UTC]
It would seem Mary-Sue like, but so many people forget how many enemies Superman has that could give him a run for his money. Parasite, Solomon Grundy, Darkseid, Doomsday, Metallo, Bizarro, Mongul...
Ironic, given that Supes certainly acts more human than the ever-stoic and often-implied-to-be-insane-which-really-puts-a-'takes-one-to-know-one'-spin-on-his-relationship-with-his-enemies Bats.
π: 0 β©: 1
PwN3Rship In reply to ImdaBatman [2014-01-29 00:12:55 +0000 UTC]
supes has a far greater pressure on his shoulders to "act human" though. acting human is "the right thing to do" and superman is restricted to that often in most people's eyes. superman is not a mary sue even though his power level is mary sue like.
people are okay with bats fucking up because he can freely appear as traumatized as his life makes him. superman is forced toΒ bottle most of his trauma inside in order to always look unbeatable. most people don't go through that, making superman's "normalness" always seem a bit strange and unrelatable.

Heh, heh... Ironic is that the Zod Gang in "Superman II" didn't actually die at all. They are seen in a deleted sequence where they are apprehended by the arctic police, along with Luthor still trying to weasel his way out again.
Superman killing Zod was struck out by the fans, but as much as I was let down by the film with how they portrayed Supes as being a Batman/Wolverine imitator, I must admit I wasn't really phased when Kal put the kibosh on Zod. The only real problem with that scene is that the civilians could've easily walked out from there.
As for defending "Man of Steel" for having these so-called 'flaws', many would still have the same speech treatment for "Superman Returns" which I personally felt they treated the Superman ambiance more better. At least I believed in Routh's Superman, whereas Cavill's version I just couldn't for some reason. Not that much Heart & Soul in him as was with Reeve/Routh's.

ImdaBatman In reply to DTWX [2014-01-18 18:55:18 +0000 UTC]
That's the thing about deleted scenes: they're only as canon as you want them to be.
Yes, the 'traveling around the world' thing might seem ripped off, but I like that it makes the movie synch up with the song "Kryptonite"
And I highly doubt Zod would have surrendered if that one particular family escaped.
Well, then, I guess we can just leave that one off on a note of respectful disagreement.

DTWX In reply to ImdaBatman [2014-01-19 10:55:12 +0000 UTC]
Also just for notice, early in the comics, Superman killed off the Zod Gang by exposing them to a lethal dose of Kryptonite to insure that Earth would'nt end up like Krypton did. So he iced them. Left him scarred for life, but he obliterated them nonetheless, and nobody had a problem with it.

DTWX In reply to ImdaBatman [2014-01-26 08:48:44 +0000 UTC]
Actually, on the contrary, "Triumphant" was to have made Batman more darker than the previous one. For example; in the beginning of the film, Man-Bat kills off Batgirl, (YAY ) years pass & Robin becomes Nightwing, (YAY
) Scarecrow does some weird shit to fuck up Batman which makes him see Jack Nicholson as the Joker, (YAY
) then Batman overcomes his fear & saves the day in a very darkly heroic fashion.
This would've make all of us forget the goofy stuff in the previous films & made Batman more of the dark psychological hero that he is.
At least, that is what I've heard on the film: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJLEjCβ¦
