Description
I'm so fed up with all the complaints about what I consider the greatest Superman movie ever. And here's why:"It's too dark for Superman"
No, it's to dark for Richard Donner-style Superman. First of all, it's not darker. It's more serious. And yes, there IS a difference! Second, I'd ask if any of you have ever even picked up a comic, but I already know that Supes is a classic cast of what tvtropes.org calls "Complaining about Shows You Don't Watch". In other words, I can think of dozens of stories off the top of my head that are just as dark: "The Death of Superman", "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow", "Kingdom Come", "Red Son", the list goes on!
"Too much destruction"
Yeah, because "The Avengers" and the Transformers movies were so mild-mannered. Or that last Star Trek movie, where a giant fucking starship crashed into San Francisco, about 2x the damage from MoS. If anything, the Avengers are even more responsible for any collateral damage: they were fighting a bunch of "go down in one hit" kind of mooks. Superman was fighting guys with the same powers, plus military training. Plus, HEL-LOOOOOOOOOOO! Ever wonder if 90% of the people evacuated when they saw a giant fucking alien laser drill hovering over them!?
(Spoiler alert) "Superman killed Zod"
I know, right? How he mercilessly crushed his hand, then throws him into a chasm and shares a moment with Lois (who also had just killed someone) like nothi-...Oh, wait, that's "Superman II", the time nobody ever gave him crap about. This is the time where he was...well, it already says so right up there. There's a difference between killing to save lives and cold-blooded murder. Not only did Bats kill RΔ's al GhΕ«l, he also tied a gargoyle to the Joker's leg and made him fall about 800 feet or so, and then there's how he shoved Harvey Dent off a building - hell that last one was literally the exact same situation that Superman was in!
EDIT: Not to mention when Iron Man killed a whole room full of thugs just because one of them broke a motherfucking Dora the Explorer watch. He literally told him he would be the first to die.
I know nobody likes Superman anymore, but give him a freaking chance! At least it's not "Superman Returns" (the one movie I hate more than that is "Iron Man 3").
I don't own. Rights to characters & films belong to DC comics.

I think Man of Steel was excellent. It brought out how Clark actually felt alienated from the rest of society since he can never do things due to the safety of humans. Of course it is logical sense for people to evacuate as well when the ship came above the city. And killing Zod, I think that is where Superman makes the decision of never kill because he felt horrible about taking a person's life. Great job.

I feel like they've never been able to successfully remake that story. The animated movie only stuck to the plot for a few minutes and the Ultimate version barely had an actual fight between them.

I dunno. They miss the point. The way I see it, the classic 7 Justice League are all supposed to be the greatest of the great. Flash: fastest thing in existence. Aquaman: ruler of 75% of the planet (including sharks, giant squids, and the Atlantean navy). Batman: badass detective with gadgets out the wazoo. Superman: ultra-powerful alien space-Jesus. And so on. They're all awesome, but each is best at what they do.

Black-ark1 In reply to ??? [2013-12-07 13:51:32 +0000 UTC]
Thank god someone else gets it.
Here's another thing: Superman HAS killed in the past. Not gladly but if the threat is too great he will kill his opponent (Doomsday). In Superman II he also killed Zod, rather callously at that, and he killed Zod in the comics too. What else was he supposed to do in this movie? There's no Kryptonite to depower Zod, and no prison on Earth that could contain him. He HAD to be killed. And Superman was clearly traumatised by the act, but that's just to show him growing and maturing as a character, to start the transition from rookie to paragon.
And god so many people go ON and ON about the destruction. Do they seriously not think that a fight between guys with superpowers would cause that much destruction? Hell, most of the damage was done by the Kryptonians, the US Army and the World Engine anyway. And then you get idiots who are like "BUT DA VENGERS DIDN'T CAUSE DAT MUCH DAMAGE." Well, yeah, because there was an entire team of them going against a much inferior force isolated to one city. Faora with one hand tied behind her back would have mopped the floor with the Avengers, and in addition to her there were about 7 other Kryptonians and a giant world destroying machine. of course there's going to be collateral! And hell, Superman TRIED to take the fight from the city by flying Zod into space, but Zod was having none of that shit and brought it straight back to earth.
Hell, even the destruction had a point. Everyone likes to (falsely) claim that Superman is overpowered and can't fail, yet here's this movie that shows he's far from perfect and he has a lot to learn, where despite his best efforts there is still a lot of damage, and people still complain. It's to contrast the Reeve movies, to show that he simply can't reverse time if he screws up. Hell, the reason there's references to Lexcorp is so that Lex will have fuel for an anti-Superman campaign in future movies.
I don't get it man, it seems nothing is good enough for Superman haters.

Okay, I'll admit there were a few testaments to that. Example: what scientist discovers a new element and then says nothing? But I still think the good outweighed the bad in that movie, and it's better than the swiss cheese-like plot of "Superman Returns".

Doug did bring up a good point in Man of Steel. Why didn't the people that Zod almost fried bolt? Zod was slowly moving his heat vision toward them. The whole setup just not a 'No-Win Situation' for Superman. A better one would have been if Zod was holding someone up by the neck and threatening to burn their face off and Superman was not in a position to save the person and his only chance is some kind of kill shot. Or that Zod started tossing people in the air left and right knowing that falling from such heights would kill them. There was a whole bunch of scenarios that could have made Superman's killing of Zod more justified because there could be no other choice but to outright kill Zod in order to prevent anymore deaths.

in his 3rd man of steel review, he's ok with the killing of zod. but the destruction and jonathan kent he doesn't get. pa kent's "maybe" didn't mean "yes", it meant "idk" he wanted to protect his son because he thought he wasn't READY yet. I wonder if he ever heard of "there's a time and a place"? i love how doug litterally ignores joe on his rant about people not getting the plan for the world engine. it was the equivalent of "LALALALA IM NOT LISTENING"
granted i have problems with the movie but not to the point where it ruins the experience as a whole.
pa kent saving a dog instead of maybe a little kid.
pa kent and the metallurgist. i'm will to bet he asked questions.
jor el not closing the door to the escape pod room instead tells lois to turn her head.
no super/freeze breath but this wasn't istablished in the movie. its a teeny tiny nit pick.
tentacle claws from world engine
p.s. I also love how people bring up the "superman got used to in 33 years, zod does it in minutes" when zod explained this reason in one sentence *and a memorable one I might add*

My big problem with this one and last one is that it was too dark in. . .everything. The environment, the people, even Superman's costume was 'dark'. It overdone.

Aaronmcloud In reply to Graeystone [2013-12-03 09:10:10 +0000 UTC]
it was more serious in tone. i didn't find it dark as in depressing or ever thought "i don't know if i should keep watching this" like how i do with all dark movies. yeah the costume could use a better fix, im not a fan of the black cuffs or lines on his hips, the shade of blue could be a teeny bit lighter, as well as the red. I'd like to see a representation of the injustice costume. thats my favorite. the yellow belt, the eradicator esque cape around his shoulders connected to the big S emblem shield on his chest.

Whoever directed "the man of steel" screwed up severely, first of all superman is pretty much uncapable of killing, and the only time (I know at least) he had to kill was a really huge deal and he even isolate himself to a distant solar system with Β a red son. So in short words the fact that superman killed on the very first movie was disrespectfully out of character (I mean everyone knows superman is the white superhero that never dirties his hands).

You say it like he wasn't clearly distraught this time. And before you say it, they've also made it clear that this Superman isn't quite as..."astro-dynamic". And like everyone else, you fail to realize that this movie is far more accurate to the source material than any other film.

No I'm not, I just wanted to state the that I found hard to believe that Clark could kill Zod like if it was nothing and move on. I was never a fan of superman but everyone knows that when a superhero kills it is a very big deal and I did not feel they gave the proper importance to Zod's murder in the movie
