Royal caeli, the oldest breed, initially had six wings reminiscent of modern Caeli Queens. However, these weren't terribly effective fliers and this trait mostly survived only in the most privileged of Caeli resulting in only Queens being passed down this trait.

The four-wing model is the first to really crack the problem of flight, as two pairs of wings could allow a Caeli to produce higher forces, allowing acceleration and climbing. While, if the wings flapped with the right timing the lower wings were able to reduce the energy wasted. These four winged caeli are now the majority, and allowed the beginnings of the Standard Caeli breed. They are the more recently developed of the two breeds, though they are both similar enough to interbreed successfully. Despite their differences, all caeli are able to propel themselves: Upwards and downwards, backwards and forwards, side to side, and hover in mid-air. And many of these flying abilities are thanks to the species’ distinctive four wings.

Their wings use a very dynamic biological system — it's lightweight, flexible and strong. Caeli wings are membranous, and come down from the collarbone down along the back and furl out like a dragonfly. Running through each wing is a network of veins that adds strength and flexibility. This allows the caeli to curve and cut through the air. There are no bones in the wings, it consists of a system of arteries filled with fluids that harden though a chemical reaction. Muscularly, the wings large arteries run from close to the collarbone but become apparent above the shoulder blades and muscles will be visible above the arms (as separate muscles for the wings).The wings are visible when inflated or deflated to some degree, with the ridges for flaps being smooth but noticible. They will 'unharden' when the caeli wills it, and the skin will fold back onto the shoulder-area.

The trade-off for this ability to retract the wings for practical purposes, such as to protect them from damage during excavation, mating or fights, is that the wings will expand and retract relatively slowly. It would take between 2 minutes to half an hour (if the caeli is sick it will take longer) to fully expand the wings ready for flight. Pups are born unable to fly until middle of childhood, they will be unable to achieve lift-off and their wings will not have expanded.

RARE - Draconic Wings: A modification of the newer avian wing type, it has the downside of being a mutation that can hinder the flight pattern of a caeli or lead to wing deformities in offspring.
